Two Golden Globes, a Peabody, 16 Emmy nominations and now the Television Critics Association (TCA) has honored Mad Men with three awards at its annual ceremony in Beverly Hills. (These are AMC first-ever wins at the awards show.)

The drama was recognized as Program of the Year, beating out The War, John Adams, The Wire and Lost. Mad Men -- "AMC's stylish new series about advertising executives confronting the social changes of the early 1960s," according to the Los Angeles Daily News -- also won for Outstanding New Program and Outstanding Achievement in Drama. Matthew Weiner (nominated for two writing Emmys), Scott Hornbacher and the duo of Jon Hamm and John Slattery (both nominated for acting Emmys) were on hand to accept the awards.

Playing the comedian, Slattery said in his acceptance speech, "I would like to say how glad I am that the show's message of drinking and smoking and whoring has resonated with the TCA."

After viewing much of the recent Madmen marathon on AMC, I am amazed at the debt this series owes to the 1956 classic, "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit".

From Don Draper's war experience and how it colors his life, to his callow wife, TV-addicted children, and much more, the series goes way beyond a mere sampling of 1950s motifs and business mores also shown in the movie , and uses story and character development taken directly from this important work. I hope Matthew Weiner gives just recognition to both the movie and the Sloan Wilson novel.
