Bloomingdale's Knows How to Sell Mad Men

mad men at bloomingdale's.jpg

From now until June 30, Bloomingdale's is using its storefront windows on Third Avenue in Manhattan to transport shoppers back in time to the early '60s a la Mad Men. Windows are decked out with vintage furniture as mannequins model a Theory wardrobe inspired by the series while monitors broadcast signature excerpts from the show.

AMC's Senior Vice President of Marketing Linda Schupack says the partnership is "exactly the type of creative advertising promotion that the Mad Men characters would thrive on." Bloomingdale's helped create the very world in which the show's fictional characters live: Real '60s ad men shopped at this very location (or sent their wives and secretaries to shop for them).

Besides the NYC display, nationwide in-store promotions incorporating video from Mad Men mean "shoppers in other key markets also get to experience the true excitement of the show." Purchase $200 worth of Theory merchandise, and you'll get a free Mad Men Season 1 soundtrack.

Live too far away to see the New York City window display (or just not interested in dealing with the summer heat)?

Wow dig all those cool pendant lights! The copper ones are outasight. But, what are those two wooden ice-bucket-looking things front and center in the third pic? Could they actually BE ice buckets? I lived my childhood during the 50's-1960's and I don't recall ever seeing anything like those...they look like wooden bulb planters! Well, it's a cool display and cheers for anything that gives our beloved MM publicity! Only about 6 weeks to go now! Yay!!!!!!!

The clothes are awful, even as an homage to 60's style. They should have worked with costume designers from the show who totally nail it.

I totally agree. The fabrics look too modern for one thing. Guess they did the best they could with today's styles and just went for slight similarity to the "60's". Those trench coats were wrong wrong wrong. Remember the coat Don had on getting out of the car in the first episode (after his commute home at the end)? --it was a straight simple men's overcoat...and his hat was just a dark classic hat...not the white, golf? hat shown in the Bloomingdale's window. Still I give them credit for the publicity and the cool light pendants...they did a better "capture" on the period furnishings than on the clothing for sure.

Yes, those wooden ice bucket type things are ice buckets. They were made by Dansk (Danish) and very poular in the 60's and 70's. Dansk was known for high quality wood ( salad bowls, trivets,
trays, etc) and brightly colored enameled bakeware among other things. Not cheap even then. I still have, use and love my Dansk items.

Hey thanks, merg, for the ice bucket ID! I was right and didn't know it! ha. Yes, I well recall how Dansk was known for quality and modern design. I remember all the beautiful salad bowl sets that came with the wooden utensils but I had never seen those ice buckets. They look to be made from teak. I'd like to find them (wonder if those in the pic are for sale as "repros"?) and buy them to use as vases! Think I'll check the Bloomies site and see if they are---thanks again for the info.

Zowie...checked the Bloomingdale's site and no they are not selling those Dansk ice buckets shown in picture 3 of the MM window displays as "repros"-- to answer my own query above. A quick check on Ebay shows a bunch of them for anywhere from opening bids of $24.99 to over $100 for buy-it-now ones. Think I've talked myself out of getting one for a "vase". They are sleek and cool looking, though...about as "60's" as it gets.
