Site of the Week: Thus Spake Drake

If the devil is in the details, then Shawn Anderson is in dire need of an exorcism. Writing under the pseudonym of Drake Lelane, Anderson uses his blog Thus Spake Drake to draw meaning from the minutest of subtexts and references to popular culture, particularly in regards to literature and music. "Music has always been my coping mechanism," he says. "And when I started the site it was meant as a venue to explore some crazy events in my life. So music became the thread of the site, but more as a background -- a soundtrack to any subject." Anderson found himself drawn to television shows that view music as a secondary plot device, so when Mad Men came along last year, he saw it as a natural fit.

"I think a lot of what drew people to the series is the feeling that there's much more going on than just the story being told each week," Anderson explains. Indeed, each of his episode recaps are rife with allusions. When Don was exposed as Dick Whitman for example, he noted the episode's inclusion of music by Yma Sumac, a singer who was wrongly assumed to be Capitol Records secretary Amy Camus working under a pseudonym.

"Music may be the common thread of the site, but for me, it's the literary references in Mad Men that really get my geek on," says Anderson. How lucky for him that the 50th anniversaries for Kerouac's On the Road and Rand's Atlas Shrugged occurred during the first season. "If Don is the embodiment of Atlas Shrugged's Hank Reardon," Anderson notes, "then Adam is the opposite, one willing to sacrifice oneself for the benefit of others." As you'd expect, Anderson's analyses take creative leaps. He admits. "I'm quite content to fall on my face. I'm really just hoping that my posts are scratching a shared cultural itch."
