No "Band of Gold"? Without that one, I wouldn't call the CD a "complete collection" of the Season 1 music! But, I'll buy it anyway! Maybe it's on there and it just didn't make the listing above. It was sung by "Don"---somebody---can't recall the last name, but he had/has a gorgeous voice, as does Vic Damone.

I remember his name was Don Cherry. I believe it was the first song in Episode 1 played while Don was doodling on the cocktail napkin trying to figure a way to sell Lucky Strikes to a suspicious public (Readers Digest article, remember? "Cigarettes will kill you"!) Oh well, maybe a 2nd CD will come out later with that on it. Please get all the music on these CD's before calling them a complete collection. Like I said above, I'll still buy it, but...

I totally agree "Band of Gold" kicked off the whole series and should be on it. I'd also like to see the Amy Winehouse "I'm No Good" song on there!
I'm definitely getting the Cd though- I remember mindway through the season thinking "I wish there was a soundtrack CD to the series" and lo and behold!

It's not Don Cherry- I just listened to his version (free) on fmradio.com:
www.last.fm/music/Don+Cherry/_/Band+of+Gold

so the MadMen song must be another vocalist/version.. anyone know?

Hmmmm...the "Books and Music" section of this site lists "Band of Gold" as being sung by Don Cherry...strange, huh? Wonder who it could be if not him??? It has a vague Ed Ames-y sound but I know it couldn't be him! Maybe the one you heard, ericcooley, is a recording by Don Cherry made at a different time than the one used on Episode 1and thus doesn't sound identical. Hope someone can clear up the mystery.

Don Cherry was the first to record "Band of Gold" in 1955 and re-recorded his hit again in 1968 for his studio album. Mel Carter released two different versions of this song in 1965/66. It would be historically inaccurate (and unlike the producers) for the show to use any other version than the first recording done by Don Cherry in '55. Unfortunately I have no clue which version was played in the first episode. Kit Carson and Petula Clarke also recorded a version of their own. Sorry, the mystery still remains... P.S. I also agree that the soundtrack should include Amy Winehouse.

Thanks, MegO for the info. Sounds like that was a popular song for artists to cover. Love it, a classic--maybe during Season 2 they will have some Johnny Mathis...he was BIG in the early '60's as all of us "boomers" well know. I remember hearing someone (Merv Griffin? Mike Douglas? Dinah Shore?) telling him during a talk show interview (in the 1970's) that between his music and Frank Sinatra's, they were responsible for most of the American population born after WWII!!! Funny, and possibly entirely true!

RE "It would be historically inaccurate (and unlike the producers) for the show to use any other version than the first recording done by Don Cherry in '55."
If that were the case they wouldn't use Amy Winehouse or that other alt-rock '90s band (forget the name) in the soundtrack. They used Bob Dylan, didn't he cut his debut after 1960? I don't know, thatw as Waaaayyyyy before my life cycle.
So, back to Cherry..that's a very good point MegO about it being a later recording, 1968? does anyone know for sure what version it is? I'd love to download it or find it somewhere.. thanks! eric

I've gotta say, I love that Julie London version of "Fly Me to the Moon"!!!

the Cardigans, that's the '90s band I was trying to remember. Who thought of that one? Hmmm. Let's see-- "circa 1960, Mad Men music score...I got it! The Cardigans!"

When I was a kid in the 70's, we had three 78RPM records in the house. These were basically singles. I cannot remember the other two, but the third was "Band of Gold" by Don Cherry. The only reason that I remember this is the Boston Bruins (I'm from Boston) had a coach by the same name. Anyway, it said 1955 on the record and that is definitely the version they play in the series. I had a flashback when I saw the first episode. On iTunes, there are two different versions by Cherry. One is the version on the show, and one is a little more produced, and, I guess "cleaner" in sound. The latter seems to me like it would be a later recording. I do not know where the record is , but I'd love to have it now!
