Mad Men

Talk Forum: What You're Saying

Talk forum this week was aflutter with chatter about the era Mad Men depicts. Patricia considers it the moment when our current way of life was beginning to form: "This era is the jumping off spot for what kind of liberties and self expression that we have today," she says. "The advertising business was a leading asset in showing our consumers to by American and to live a good life. Smoking and drinking won't kill you, it's for the good life and relaxation."

Kristine, however, had an opposite read on the show: "There was nothing 'innocent' about the early 1960s," she says. "That's the beauty of this program. Any romance you might try to conjure is tanked by the theme, message and specifics of this series." She went on to posit, "I am particularly fond of the way in which this show reveals the deep emptiness of domestic life in the early 1960s, and the anger under the surface of most families. If we understand ourselves better, perhaps we can save ourselves from the march toward mediocrity which is being piped into our homes, places of work and classrooms by the corporations who now rule us."

I reviewed "Babylon" last evening and from my second time I saw how cruel and selfminded the business men of that era were. When not knowing how to sell an Lipstick campaign it was said" Let's leave it to the chickens"( meaning the women in the office) They were also referred to as Hens. However when Peggy came up with her "Basket of Kisses" comment it was noted as "she's someting else"
Yet when Peggy was trying to explain that she didn't want to a hundred colors to choose from Joan jump right in and said "Well I think that's enough complaining for one day" Joan needs complete control over the infer structure of the office and yet she couldn't make love to Roger unless the bird cage was covered. When Don went to the club with Midge and looked at her he knew that their relationship was over. He was perfectly bored with the place until the last performers sang the song return to Baylon , you could see the realization of Jewish nations plith in his face.
