Mad Men

Q&A: John Slattery (Roger Sterling)

Slattery Mad Men's John Slattery talks about the pleasures of working with his wife who plays his on-screen wife as well.

What was it like working with your wife Talia Balsam (Mona Sterling)?
We had been on a series together before (HBO's K Street) but never worked in the same scenes. In Mad Men when we finished the first scene, which was one in a restaurant with Don and Betty (Episode 2), we realized that because we were sitting on the same side of the booth and telling two sides of the same story, we never even looked at each other. Next time, we made it a point. Knowing Talia as well as I do, made it easier somehow to fill the scenes with the emotion they needed. I suppose it might have been harder if she weren't such a good actress.

Is it more fun to play a "bad" character than a good one?
What makes this character so interesting to play is the combination of good and bad in him. If he were only one or the other, I don't think anyone would care either way.

What has been your favorite scene or scenes as Roger so far?
I think the most fun I had were the scenes drinking with Don in the oyster bar. Great writing, booze, smoking and seafood. Wahoo!

Check out our earlier interviews with January Jones (Betty Draper) and Rich Sommer (Harry Crane).

How come Mad Men isn't on this week? It's about the only show I look forward to.

I love this guy. But where are the other interviews? I mean the ones with Pete and Don and Peggy??

My favorite John Slattery scene was the one in the hospital after his heart attack. John's performance was so rich with emotion, a fantastic moment of drama.
