Q&A: January Jones (Betty Draper)

Actress January Jones discusses projectile vomiting and being a female Clint Eastwood.

What were some of your favorite scenes from Season 1?
A couple of my personal favorites this past season were when Jon Slattery’s character projectile vomits after running up all those flights of stairs. I think it’s mainly because I heard some very funny stories from Jon Hamm about shooting the scene and how hard it was and how much they were making each other laugh. Wish I could’ve seen it. It was also an episode that I watched when I was home with my family in the Midwest and my Dad laughed so hard at that moment that he almost choked on whatever he was eating and kept rewinding it. Good memories.  Other than that, for me personally, I enjoyed shooting the end of episode "Shoot" when I was a very feminine Clint Eastwood. Felt very cool and sorta tough with that bb gun and smoke I must say. ;)

What kind of research did you do to play your character? Did you watch any old films / TV shows?
In regards to research, I read Revolutionary Road and The Feminine Mystique
by Betty Friedan and watched several movies from that time. Luckily I
am a huge fan of older movies and don’t really consider that research.

What was it like filming the first season of Mad Men.  Is it a fun series to shoot?
It’s a very fun series to shoot. Never having done a series before, I was pleasantly surprised how
similar to movies it was. I wasn’t too rushed creatively and was a very safe environment to act in.
I am blessed with amazing colleagues and beautiful writing. I can’t wait to get back at it!

What are you doing during the hiatus?
During the hiatus I am keeping very busy with my jewelry line and working on other projects and
spending time with friends and family. Trying to travel a bit and patiently waiting for the strike to
be resolved so we can all get back to doing what we love.
