The only thing the original IT had going for it was Tim Curry as Pennywise. It begs to be remade by a competent screenwriter and director. A cast of unknown actors would help. I had a lot of trouble accepting John Boy Walton and John Ritter in a Horror flick; bad casting.
Technically, I agree with you. But it was a TV movie and those people were the stars back then. There are loads of decent quality TV movies out there with the same "problem".
I just thought it was a good story. Maybe it wasn't great, but it did the job.
The excuse of it being a TV movie is a cop out. Like you pointed out, John Boy, Jack Tripper, Venus Flytrap, sounds like they were using studio contract actors rather than auditioning people. It was too watered down, especially when you consider what Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling aired in the 60's. I hope they do remake it, and its made for TV, just to give a slap in the face to the first director, screenwriter, director of photography and editor.
