A Very Poor "Monster Fest", Oopps Correction, "AMC FearFest" line up 2008!

AMC AMC what were you thinking with this list? Now this proves you pay no attention to ANY of our Blogs! What happened to 13-Days? Now we only get eight? What the heck is this? You get one hit show; "Mad Men" and you forget your fans, which we made you so great and paved your way by word of mouth! Why bother having a Monster Fest Blog? It's a waste of time. I am so incredibly disappointed all around that I don't know where to start. Well let's start with Piñata Island. How many fans have complained and complained over this flick and yet you still air this crap movie. Then there is Psycho from 98, what the heck is this? Major slap in the face. The Constantine, speechless!! Where is Friday the 13th one and two? Jason Goes To Hell? Good Lord!? Where is the Omen, Carrie, and the true original Universal Monsters. (Which I know you would air at the wee hours of the morning so no one would watch!) We all gave you such a fair and respectable list of great classic chilling horror flicks that I can't believe your staff picked these? Do you not break down our Blog lists to the most requested? Is your staff 12?
I commend the AMC Monster Fest Bloggers for all their fabulous horror picks and thoughts. I have by word of mouth advised so many people to tune into 13-Days of future great Halloween horror and this is what we get??? DISAPOINTED I SAY!! Now how do I explain? AMC you are making me look bad!
Shame on you AMC for dissing your always-loyal fans!
Signed,
The Queen of Scream

I totally agree!!! I wished that Carrie and the Omen should be on! They haven't had Carrie on since monsterfest '05. And Piñata Island?!?! This movie belongs to SUCKFEST, not MONSTERFEST!!! C'MON AMC!!!!!

I just dont understand why MONSTERFEST is only a week. I think that it would be beneficial to AMC to have it longer because more viewers tune in at the end of October to watch MONSTERFEST. Which would mean more money for AMC.

By looking at the list amc is doing what we asked. they are mixing old with the new. They just are not doing what we want. I gave up on amc along time ago. And it's because of amc that I started collecting horror movies, after I had seen that the line up got worse and worse through out the years. Thats why I have over 175 horror movies I do my own ''''''''MONSTERFEST''''''''. I'm tried of trying, this happens with all the monsterfest. And with all the monterfest it always fall on deaf ears. If you are unhappy with 8 days start yours a week early. Thats what I'm going to do. NO ONE is going to ruin my halloween.

Thanks for agreeing and being a voice, which unfortunately will never be heard.
I do agree with Deb, they are mixing it up which is great but just with the wrong type of monster movies. I to have a very large collection of VHS and DVD of horror movies, BUT, I love the feel of coming home and just flipping on the TV to AMC and let it run or schedule in shows. I guess I am spoiled were I just don’t want to pop in a tape or disk.
Then there is Comcast who has Fearnet and boy oh boy talk about bad B-lame movies.
Again, let me stress horror is HUGE! Do you ever hear of a Comedy Fest or Drama Fest circulating from city to city? NO! So with this I hope more fans will join in and be a voice….THX!

One last comment please… Where the Devil is, (no pun intended)
THE EXORCIST ????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How can you NOT show the all time classic, scariest movie ever written, directed, screened and acted during your Halloween Fear Fest?
Now this is just a crying shame!

OK, reviewing the 2008 Fear Fest Horror list for our 8-Day total? Nice that AMC tossed us a bone? (Yes I am trying to be nice Deb, but as far as kids they should stick with 13-Days on The Disney Channel and the Family Channel, and leave AMC to the big kids!
Here are my thoughts on this list. If I would have created this list yes I to would have had considered all our viewer pools and take all in consideration of picks. Such as, looked at the most picked, requested movies then decided and of course to be fair mixed it up a bit.
Lets start with which movies I would have pulled. This is way to easy. Lets start with Bride of Chucky, The Bride of Frankenstein, Constantine, Curse of Frankenstein, Damien: Omen II, Frankenstein Meets Space Monster, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, House of Dracula, House of Frankenstein, Horror of Dracula, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, Magic, Omen III: The Final Conflict, Survival Island, Psycho (1998, Puppet Master, Resident Evil, Return to the House on Haunted Hill, Son of Dracula, Son of Frankenstein, The She-Creature, Tales from the Crypt: Bordello of Blood, and finally Willard.
This is 25 out of 38 movies I would have pulled form this list. Only to have them replaced with the following. Lets see if you agree? I am trying to be fair and make all happy. Ok here I go.
The Exorcist, The Omen (Original Only), Carrie, The Shinning, Psycho (the original), Night of the living Dead, Friday the 13th, Children of the Corn, Childs Play, Black Christmas (original only), Candyman, Cujo, The Blair Witch Project, The Howling, Creep Show, Scream, Salem Lot (Original), Amityville Horror (original), Evil Dead, Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, (all three the originals!), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original only), Hell Raiser, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Re-make please) and finally Phantasm...
What do you think? I think this is a killer list! Not that AMC list is so bad, I mean they did try. They can only get so many rights to movies. So I am trying to be fair and nice. It just feel that it really stinks that it's down to what 8-days, and you know you will have repeats.
Please tell me/us which movies you would have picked and switched?
Thank you!

first off, amc doesn't have their schedule up yet, so how can you be sure those are the movies they are showing? just because someone wrote that amc emailed him a list? anyone could post that.

second, what's the purpose of reposting every single post you make as a new subject? it means everyone has to read trite declarations of "outrage" over the movie schedule of a cable network TWICE.

third, do you expect anything else after years of this same trash?

default userpic

Anyone who thinks I made up the FearFest movie marathon list, please e-mail AMC and asked them to send you a list of movies that are showing for this year's horror marathon. You'll see that the list I posted matches up to the AMC e-mail list.

user-pic

First of all NICK, that list contains 38 movies. Let's say their run time is 2 hours each (most horror films have that kind of TV run time). That provides 76 hours of movies. Monsterfest has been a 24 hour marathon during its run for the past few years now, and I imagine that's not changing. That would mean at a length of 8 days, they would need 192 hours of movies to cover that. The list you have their covers less than half of what's needed to cover the run times needed.

Now, let's say they repeat up to 10 of those movies on Halloween itself (I believe in the past only a few have been actually repeated on Halloween, usually the Halloween films, but for argument's sake we'll say 10). That still only gives about 20 more hours of coverage, let's say that makes 100 to cover for extra run times and extra repeats. They're still almost 100 hours short.

The fact is that may be a list of some of the movies they are running, but unless they are going back to the old standard of playing a few horror movies a night from around 7pm to 1am or so like they did many years ago, this list cannot possibly be complete and official. I don't doubt they may have sent you a basic list, but as I have mentioned before, I have seen preliminary lists like this come out in years prior, usually on press releases, and most often they were not even close to what/how many movies were actually on. Like I said in another post, AMC has played a lot of other horror movies on its Fear Friday, and a lot of channels don't pick up rights to movies they show on certain months until a week or so before said month starts, so I don't think this is a definitive list by any means.

Secondly, you keep complaining about the length of time Monsterfest lasts this year. This is pointless. If you look back to just a couple years ago, 2006, Monsterfest was only 9 days long, from the 22nd to the 31st (they called it 10 days of horror but if I'm not mistaken it didn't start until night time on the first day, so that wasn't a whole day of horror. In years before that, it was only around 6 or 7 days during the week of Halloween, and even then it wasn't 24 hours, you just got a few hours of horror movies every night. It seems like you're just nitpicking and looking for stuff to complain about here. You should consider yourself lucky that you get 24 hours every day for a week of horror, I remember when it was exciting to watch movies from around 7 to early the next morning.

default userpic

I'm not really sure how the movie schedule is going to work out, Jack. If you feel that strong about how there's not enough movies to fill in the 8 days of Fearfest, then I strongly advise you to e-mail AMC and give them the same math example you gave me. They probably know more than me.

default userpic

One more thing, the only reason I complain about the length of Monsterfest is because I thought that this year, MonsterFest would start on the 19th of October. Usually Monsterfest starts on a Sunday, (except last year). I've been watching Monsterfest since '05, and it always last for at least a week and a half. That's why I'm surprised about this year's Monsterfest.

user-pic

lol NICK, I think you need to calm down. I wasn't trying to attack you nor am I worried about the scheduling, I'm simply trying to show you that it's very possible that the list you were emailed is not the complete list of movies. It won't hurt you to admit something might be possible. I also never said that my idea is 100% true, I was just giving you straight data to prove my point, rather than just make invalidated statements, and I don't think that's anything to get worked up about. I gave multiple scenarios and information to try to illustrate a point, and the fact remains that the list you have there is not enough, even allowing for a lot of repeat showings, to cover 8 days worth of programming. Again, I never said you didn't really get any email and that the list they sent you is fake, I'm just saying that people shouldn't jump to say the proverbial Monsterfest sky is falling because there may very well be more, better movies added at any point (Of course, as I mentioned, it may be all they're showing, and it could be going back to a primetime only kind of thing, with only a few movies each night, that's entirely possible). If course, I'm not worried enough to email them about it, because like I said, I've seen early lists like this every year and most of the time they are nowhere near being complete representations of what Monsterfest will really be.

As for the length of time of Monsterfest, again, if you look back at Monsterfest X, which was from 2006 (which you can do if you just type Monsterfest X into a search browser and take a look at the old site) you will see it was only about 9 days, not a week and a half. Last year was really the first year where Monsterfest was almost two weeks long, and if you think about it, it made some sense, Halloween was on a Wednesday and the previous Wednesday would be a weird day to start Monsterfest, and the Sunday beforehand would be too late, so they started it the previous Monday. Other than that odd year, I can't recall a time Monsterfest was that long, so like I said, a total of 8 days of straight horror movies is nothing to complain about. If anything, it's in line with what they've done for years now. I agree, it would be great to have 2, heck, even 3 weeks of straight horror, I would love it, but for a channel that isn't just a horror channel (a la' Chiller), that isn't something they're likely to do.

default userpic

Leave Nick alone hes not lying about the lineup because I also wrote to them and they sent me the same thing. I wish they would just go back to the old days and just show the universal monster movies and the hammar horror films. Plus what the hell is "FearFest" change that crap and go back to the Monsterfest!

default userpic

ok ok deb's back. Yes I agree with the movies you picked to throw out Rebbeca, we can get sick of the same thing over and over again, But the list you kept is to perfect. You really do need to have what I call P.U's. You know the B movies that you watch with friends while partying having a few drinks (if you know what I mean) having a great time laughing at the silly movies that at one time someone took seriously directing. Someone made up to be the monster, and his costume is a mere glade trashbag (Attack of the Giant Leeches). I know there are a lot of people out there who have their favorites. Mine is Attack of the 50ft Woman (oringnal) and Attack of the Giant Leeches. Sorry I can't be serious about the best horror line up.

default userpic

Jack you act like AMC has never had a repeat.

default userpic

Deb.. Yes I have to agree with you. Bad B-Movies are a ton of fun to watch, drinks, and be merry and can talk thru-. My friends and I love the following, Jack Frost with the killer snowman, way to cheesy, Eight Legged Freaks, and finally Food of The Gods. So point taken and agreed.
I just don’t see this ever happing were everyone can happily agree… To many different sorts of horror and personalities to go around, which is fine with me.

user-pic

Everyone has some great points about the selection of movies AMC shows during their annual horror festival... but isn't some dead filler a must during a 24-hour movie marathon? I would think it would be pretty hard to keep your butt planted in a seat for 24 hours staright (forget attempting eight straight days, one is hard enough).

Maybe it's my ADD, but I can barely sit still after 2 or 3 hours. I have to get up and do stuff, which is usually a great time to turn the volume up and listen to films such as Puppet Master, Bordello of Blood or Halloween 5. Don't get me wrong, I used to love these films as a kid, but I am sick of watching them every Halloween, but... Halloween 5 and such make great background noise for when I'm doing the dishes or playing with the dogs or shaving, etc. And that's why I think they are good films for FearFest (formerly MonsterFest), because even though I won't sit and watch the entire film, I will pop in-and-out of the room to watch a few minutes, but the important thing is that it keeps me tuned to AMC. Ratings!!

Which leads to my next bit... As much as we would love to see 20 to 25+ true American Horror Classics every year on AMC, that just isn't going to happen unless AMC can get some major league sponsorships, because TV rights to films vary. Popular movies require big money (Constantine) or cult hits (Puppet Master) to lame films (Pinata: Survival Island) cost less. And rather than having an 8 day, 24 hour horror festival with 15 movies on repeat, you get 35+ films instead (with a far less repeat ratio). Besides, don't most of us already own Halloween, The Omen, and so on? I don't know about the rest of you, but it's these little films that I most look forward to every Halloween, such as Return to House on Haunted Hill (which I have yet to see) and the silly black and white films like Braineaters (which seem to be missing this year at the moment).

default userpic

King,

I have to agree somewhat. Just having a scary music running in the back ground while you are doing dishes, bills, cleaning, talking on the phone or my favorite trying to nap and have the volume low is the best! Or, now while I am decorating my house for Halloween it’s a most and a rule to have a scary movie running in the background!
I have made it my house rule that once October 1st hits only horror movies will be shown 24/7 until November 1st… Argghhhh!!!!!!

default userpic

Folks I'm signing out for the FEARFEST (what ever) season. see you guys next year, and have a happy and safe halloween Take care

user-pic

nothing beats the classics, I hope you weren't referring to me, as I said multiple times I wasn't attacking him or calling him a liar, rather just mentioning that the list was probably not an official or complete list, I don't need to go over this again.

deb, What on earth are you talking about? I not only stated multiple times in both of my posts that AMC is known to show some repeats, mostly on or the day before Halloween, but I even allowed for over 10 repeats during the whole weekly event (when I tried to illustrate how the list provided was too short for an 8 day marathon), which, as far as I'm concerned (and I've been watching Monsterfest for a decade now) is either at or even more repeats than are usually shown on Monsterfest. Nice try though.

KingMalice, I agree wholeheartedly with your post. You've basically reiterated a lot of the points I've tried repeatedly to get across in my many posts about Monsterfest. Well said.

user-pic

I knew exactly the points you were trying to make, Jack-O Sux. It almost seems like we go through this routine every year. I guess the best thing to do if you don't like what's on TV is to watch a DVD or socialize with the outside world. Hahaha. You know your stuff, gotta give you that. But fans are fans, so you can't blame them for wanting the very best, everyone has that right, eh?

As far as that turning the volume down and taking a nap - I did that several times last year, usually when The Fog was on. It's a good film, but it doesn't play well on AMC with the commercials and all. And it also seems like I'm the only one who enjoyed seeing The Frighteners on last year. I watched it 3 or 4 times.

default userpic

Hey Jack-O-Sux nah man I wasn't trying to start a fight just saying that nick is right if you do email them and ask for the lineup they give you the exact one he posted. Its got some good movies in it just not enought universal and hammar horror films. But Im just telling everyone he isn't lying about it btw this is to you again Jack-O-Sux Ive been watching AMC monsterfest since it started to do you or anyone else have amc monsterfest 2000 with whoopi goldberg and linda blair on tape god that year was awesome!

default userpic

Btw is there anyone here like myself who is looking forward the remake of the wolfman??? It looks very promising.

user-pic

King Malice, you weren't the only one who liked seeing The Frighteners. Maybe it's because I first saw it with old friends many years ago on Halloween, but I think it's a great movie to watch around Halloween. I really agree with your comments about the fact that even though a lot of the movies they play have been seen by most of us hundreds of times, they're still nice to have around, but the part I agreed with most was the background noise part. I agree, I love to sit and watch Monsterfest, especially if it's a movie I really love like Halloween or American Werewold in London, but it's also nice to have some of the other movies on as background noise while you're doing something else. It's always fun to have the atmospheric Halloween 4 on while you try to read or to have The Frighteners on while you decorate. They keep your TV tuned to AMC all week, which is great. I personally love The Fog (JC is my favorite horror director) but I know what you're saying when it's on TV. It's nice to have on but commercials take away a lot of its suspense. And as far as my other comments, I really didn't mean to attack anyone for their thoughts on the schedule, but I just feel like Monsterfest still offers up some great viewing, and I'm glad we still have it to look forward to after all these years, as AMC could be like other channels have been and just get rid of it. I remember when USA used to show horror all the time, TNT too with Monstervision and also around Halloween in general, and they don't show much of anything anymore. I guess my biggest thought is that it's nice to be able to still have AMC's Monsterfest to look forward to at all.

nothing beats the classics, I know you weren't trying to start a fight, sorry if I sounded uptight. I have to say I only have a couple movies from Monsterfest on tape, and I don't think I have anything with Whoopi in it, although I do remember that year. Sorry I can't help there.

If you guys like talking horror, you should go over and join the boards on horrormovies.com. I'm running a Best Horror Quote tournament right now (I did a Best Horror Death tournament last year), you should check it out. It's a great place to discuss horror and there is absolutely no drama, everyone's opinions are totally respected. I can't remember anyone being ripped for their views and it is a totally peaceful board, and there's always lots of horror talk and games going on. Just figured I'd let you and anyone else that likes talking horror that we're a fun group and everyone's welcome!

user-pic

I will most likely watch whatever AMC shows for Monsterfest, but I hope they get their white balance problem fixed. Everytime they come back from commercial, the color is all blown out on the TV. It resolves within a few seconds, but it's annoying. It doesn't happen with any other channel. Has anyone had the same issue?

user-pic

Jack or anyone else that might know... When a movie is considered public domain (i.e. the original Night of the Living Dead), can networks show these movies any time they wish without cost or do they have to pay for said movies in some capacity?

user-pic

King Malice, from what I understand and have read, any movie, TV show or other media that is considered in the public domain is free for broadcasting to others through any form of media. There are plenty of websites that show public domain stuff, so I believe TV networks can do the same.

There are some great public domain movies, like Night of the Living Dead, House on Haunted Hill, Carnival of Souls, and one of my favorites, Les Diabolique (It's a Wonderful Life is as well). Still, for every good one in the Public Domain there are about 20 terrible ones like Bride of the Monster.

I think ChillerTV has shown House on Haunted Hill and Carnival of Souls, and IFC has shown Les Diabolique. I think AMC is more focused on using mostly the classic monster movies for the few classic horror flilms they choose to show, but I think any of those I mentioned would be great viewing during Halloween. Dementia 13, one public domain movie, was shown during last year's Monsterfest, so AMC has done it before.

I am not at all happy with the choices this year, not enough of the good stuff from the fifties, big bugs, big lizards, dinos, just a bunch of slash and gash, boring as hell.
the following are OK.

The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Curse of Frankenstein (1957)
The Fly (1958)
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)
Frankenstein Meets Space Monster (1965)
house of Dracula (1945)
House of Frankenstein (1944)
Horror of Dracula (1958)
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
The Invisible Man (1933)
Motel Hell (1980)
The Mummy(1932)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Return to the House on Haunted Hill (2007)
Son of Dracula(1943)
Son of Frankenstein(1939)
The She-Creature (1956)
Tales from the Crypt: Bordello of Blood (1996)

What I wanted more of.
Godzilla
Them,
Black Scorpion
Kronos
The Beast from 20000 fathoms
Earth vs. the flying saucers
Gorgo
Tarantula
Giant Behemoth
The day the earth stood still
Body snatchers
The Thing
any Sci fi and horror flicks from the fifties

user-pic

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Jack-O Sux. I had a feeling that's how thing's were, but I wasn't 100% sure. I believe I saw NOTLD on 4 or 5 networks last Halloween.

I know in DVD land that public domain films can be thrown on a disc and sold by anyone that can produce DVDs and/or videos. I do think it's funny how there are some 5 to 10 different companies that put out NOTLD on DVD. As much as it sucks to know that some people are getting screwed out of their royalties, it's awesome that you can get one of those 50 classic movies sets for the price of a new release. Giant Gila Monster is another great public domain film. Just badass. Love that lizard.

This years schedule is really disappointing
Monsterfest 2006 was great, its just sad to see it all coming slowly to a close
Fear Fest...BAH!

I myself am very old school and totally enjoy and love to see what I call the classics on Halloween night. This means Halloween, Friday the 13th, The Omen, the Exorcist, Carrie, just to name a few. Essentially I have to say I cannot get enough of Halloween (1979) on this very special night. I also do think that someone missed the boat over at AMC. READ the Blogs!!! It’s so obvious what the people want.
Longer Monster Fest, air the standard horror classics, don’t show 1000 Repeats.
It’s so simple and easy to please us. AMC is making this much too hard.
Most people like repetition in life and don’t like change, especially when it comes to their favorite holidays.
Monster Fest will never be perfect to meet all our terms, but they can try by reading our Blogs and do try a little harder.
KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)

What can I say...AMC has let me down this year. Not only did the time frame dwindle to nearly nothing, it isn't even MONSTERFEST anymore!

What are ya'll thinking? For years I have tolerated the bad movies, i.e....Halloween over and over again. And when did Constantine become Horror? Frankly, I am sick of it. Where are all the Universal Monsters and Hammer Horrors?? What about Stephen King? I am just not happy with this line up at all.

I remember one year, 1999 or was it 2000, Monsterfest was all about Universal Monsters, trivia, etc. It was also the coolest Monsterfest website they every had. There was plenty of interactive pages, like Make a Monster. I miss the days of Monsterfest when it was like that.

Long overdue, are the days of a cool Monsterfest. I am so disappointed! I used to look forward to Monsterfest, tell everyone about it, and now...well...I guess another channel somewhere is going to provide the fun marathon of classic horrors. I am so glad I subscribed to Netflix. Looks like my horror fest will be my own creation this year! Bah!
