Music and movies go hand in hand, as illustrated in this week's 3x3 interview with Ween, Magnetic Fields and Carbon Leaf. And while the last few years have been great for musician bio pics (Ray, Walk the Line, Control...), it doesn't get any more real than the concert movie.
Some of the greatest filmmakers have delved into the format: Jonathan Demme on the Talking Heads in Stop Making Sense; Martin Scorsese following the Band in The Last Waltz. And now there's U2 3D. To get a taste of the band in action, check out this footage documenting their performance in Cannes last year.
Don't you just love when someone else searches through the 419 billion videos on YouTube to get the good ones for you? Here, courtesy of Switched.com, is a fistful of 1980s celebrities shamelessly hawking computers and game systems that you probably gave to the Salvation Army back in 1991. I'm particularly fond of the John Cleese one, but I never would have thought it would be possible for me to feel sorry for Mr. T. And if you've ever wondered what Jack Black looked like when he was 12 years old, here's your chance!
Here's how bad Across the Universe is: As I was watching Julie Taymor's pastiche of Beatles songs, I actually started thinking that it might not be such a bad idea to go back and rewatch Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, pretty widely considered one of the worst movies of the 1970s. At least it has a certain kitsch value. And now that we all have DVD players and 300” tvs, we can actually freeze-frame and try to pick out the 75 or so celebrities credited as “Our Guests at Heartland” in the big finale. (Did you know that Leif Garrett was in this? Dame Edna? Gwen Verdon?)
Ron and Gene debate whether the classic Jon Voigt movie The Champ deserves to be resurrected, and whether Samuel L. Jackson can give soul to "Billy's" reincarnated spirit.
