The Best Romance Movies

We're at T-Minus One Week until Valentine's Day. Even though I'm not one of the people who into this particular holiday, it's also so big I can't ignore it. I'm therefore always at a loss as to what to do. Fortunately, there are plenty of films out there to help me get closer to understanding.

I always start with a page out of Sleepless in Seattle. Yes, it's a bit cheesy, but it's in my age range and you can't deny the film's charm. I think the take-home message is that the days of flowers and chocolates are over: If you want to do Valentine's Day right, it's either gotta be extreme, (a la the Empire State Building) or at least unique (thankfully, I haven't yet reached the level of desperation where I've considered getting a star named after someone).

What are some of your favorite can't-miss romance films, and what Valentine's Day lessons have they taught you?

Why don't you kiddies (the under 25 generation) do some serious study of film history so you learn something about great films and great film-making? The list above is terrible for a number of reasons: 1) neither Toms (Hanks/Cruise) can act their way out of a paper bag---which is why "Sleepless" and "McGuire" fail so badly as films; 2) none of the other films mentioned, with the exception of "Moulin Rouge" (and I am assuming you are talking about the Nicole Kidman film rather than the Jose Ferrer film), has anything approaching a sense of humour, an essential element in a great romantic film. Look at the original films that were the source for modern remakes (almost all of which are terrible by comparison): An Affair to Remember, The Shop Around The Corner, The Philadelphia Story, Roman Holiday, City Lights, It Happened One Night----and so on. Modern film-makers haven't the sensibilities needed to make a great romantic film. Well, David Lean did with Dr. Zhivago, but Lean was a very traditional and older director who understood the secrets of the human heart.

One of the best romance movies was "A Walk in the Clouds" the story line was creative, relevant for any time period but uniquely so for the time period chosen. The cast was chosen so well that it was beyond genius. Each actor played their roles with such skill and depth that I literally wanted to live that story. The ending was exactly what the audience wanted but the approach to that end was so precarious that only in the last moments was the end of the journey seen as possible. To this day I still have an infatuation for all members of the cast. Far better than any food delight but a true touch of heaven for the soul. TJ

Yo keatsfan, take it easy on the youngin's. Both Toms have made some fine films, although romance is not their best genre. Of all romance movies, I believe there is truly one top choice: Casablanca.

Can someone explain Love Actually to me? It does absolutely nothing for me, but I've yet to meet a girl that does not both own, adore, and watch it once a week. What is it about this movie??

Some of my favorite romance movies are Serendipity,It Could Happen To You,and The Majestic! .......and plenty more :)

Serendipity! Ugh, I think every guy who lived no the east coast and had a girlfriend/wife at the time rued that movie--we all had to take trips to the overcrowded cafe in New York!

"A Walk in the Clouds" is thus far the best romantic movie I have seen to date and I am way over 25 (to the blogger above) and have seen all the movies mentioned in the above blogs and then some.

Okay, I'm a little late getting in on this one...soooo many to choose from. Good ones mentioned above, I like Serendipity too. But gosh, what about Pretty Woman, Officer and A Gentleman, Dirty Dancin?? However, I too am a fan of the older ones. Even the romantic comedy: Doris Day, James Garner, Rock Hudson...Not a huge Betty
Davis fan, but oh, The Great Lie. The list could go on endlessly if you go back to when movies were movies...what about Gone With The Wind???
How could any woman resist "Cap'n Butla", or any
man not give "Scaw'let" whatever she desired??

Never too late to weigh in! I think Pretty Woman and Sex and the City are very similar for me. I just don't get it. Gone with the Wind, I absolutely agree. One of the classics, and unlike a lot of older romances, it really is timeless. You can watch it today and see many modern techniques and never know how old the movie really was.

Well, I agree with the Sex / City thing. Never watched it, never cared to. Not a huge fan of any of those gals. They're not terrible, just not that into them. But PRETTY WOMAN, oh wow, Richard is
soooooo perfect in this (and most anything he does). And Julia, though a prostitute, she's not a slut, and when he dresses her up and she dresses him down...it's positively magical and absolutely possible. Even girls not in that lifestyle have to admitt they dream of such - millionaire or not...just the connection. I think if you were female, you'd get it! lol
As far as GWTW, that's one that down to the last extra was casted to the t. Clark and Vivian were so perfectly matched...enough could never be said of this one.
