Now or Then - Terminator Salvation or Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines?

Now: Terminator Salvation (2009)Then: Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
Much like the Alien movies, the Terminator series gave us one of the greatest sequels in movie history, before being mined for diminishing returns by its franchise-hungry studio. The latest entry, Terminator Salvation, jettisons the time travel plot of the earlier films and instead takes place in a generically devastated post-nuclear future, where all the nasty things alluded to in the past are now finally taking place. In the previous installment, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, however, we got a variation on the usual Terminator plot: Robot from the future arrives to kill unwitting human in the present, while someone else from the future arrives to protect said human. So which of these two killer robot scenarios will win this time?
John Connor, Petulant Kid Turned Future Messiah
Terminator Salvation: With the War Against the Machines in full swing, we finally get to see the adult John Connor (Christian Bale) fighting against Skynet and issuing daily radio missives to the Resistance. But if he's considered a Savior by so many, why is Connor fighting under someone else's command?
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines: Convinced that Judgment Day has not been averted (good call), a youngish Connor (Nick Stahl) is living his life off the grid, until he's sucked back into the thick of things by two Terminators sent back in time -- one to kill him, the other to protect him.
Winner: Terminator 3. You'd think Bale would take this one in a walk, but he just isn't given much to work with here.
The Latest in Killer Robot Technology
Terminator Salvation: [Spoiler Alert!]
Though he doesn't know it at first, Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) is
a half-human "infiltration droid" -- the only one of his kind -- who
only thinks he's a good guy.
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines:
The T-X (Kristanna Loken), aka the Terminatrix, has a full arsenal of
futuristic weaponry hiding inside her sleek, sexy body. Plus, she can
control most other technology by remote.
Winner: Terminator Salvation. Marcus's existential dilemma lends this otherwise nondescript McPocalypse some welcome depth.
Intra-Franchise Consistency
Terminator Salvation: A
CGI Arnold Schwarzenegger, fresh out of the box as a state-of-the-art
T-800, makes a cameo appearance near the end. In addition, people say,
"I'll be back," "No fate but what we make," and "Come with me if you
want to live." (No "Hasta la vista, baby," alas.)
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines:
Schwarzenegger's actually in this one, so they have less work to do to
make it feel like part of the series. Still, they do manage to get John
Connor's age wrong.
Winner: Terminator 3. With a few tweaks, Salvation could just as easily have been a Matrix sequel.
Verdict
Winner: Terminator 3. Tired rehash beats lifeless reinvention. At least this one gives us characters we can care about!

Superhero/sci-fi third installments are so often disappointing. Think Superman 3, Spiderman 3, Batman Forever (ug, don't think about that one on second thought.) But between "Rise of the Machines" which suffers from being nothing special, and "Salvation" which takes itself far too seriously, I'll take the less pretensious 140 minute car chase.
I see the Terminator 3 in 2005 with my father, when I am 15 years old.
I love it so much (my dad do :D)!
I think it's better than Spiderman 3.

The Terminator: Salvation reviews are starting to come in, and it looks like Terminator: Salvation is going to be a hit. The reboot film of the Terminator series, starring Christian Bale, is an update on the film series that began in 1984 with the release of the first film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The first film was shot for $6 million, and made over $80 million. Some people will look into a quick cash loan to see the new one. Salvation is a franchise reboot, as both prequel and sequel, and it's been getting a lot of buzz. It might be worth short term loans to see if the Terminator: Salvation reviews turn out well.
Does anyone know why the original actors: Linda Hamilton and Edward Furlong were not given the chance to play their parts in Terminator 3? Did Linda's character get killed somewhere and I missed it? I was a bit disappointed when the script made no mention of them. We simply (as the older generation) had to erase them from memory. I have not seen the 4th installment: Terminator Salvation. It seems, again, we start over with another actor carrying the role of John Connor. I remember the 'Alien' series carried Sourgorney Weaver as the actor for the series. It has been difficult to keep readjusting my sites on all the new actors with no mention of the former. I don't know why but it makes the story a little less interesting when original actors are just axed out with no explanation. I loved the first two movies and when the 3rd came out, I felt let down about the guy they used to play John. And now another new face for John in the 4th. I guess I'm too sentimental about the characters. If anyone knows what really happened to Hamilton and Furlong, please share your thoughts. thanks.
crome014: Linda Hamilton was offered the part of Sarah Connor in T3, but she turned them down. I don't know why. It might be because she wasn't paid enough, or she may just not have wanted to do a Terminator sequel; she had been romantically involved with James Cameron at the time of T2. There were reports of her appearing in TERMINATOR SALVATION, but I don't know what came of that; her character obviously doesn't appear in the film.
Edward Furlong wasn't offered the part of John Connor in T3 because by that point he'd become something of a wreck (drugs, scandal, etc.). So Nick Stahl replaced him. I don't know if Stahl was offered the part of JC in TS (probably not) but Christian Bale wound up playing him after being inititally offered the part of Marcus Wright. Bale wanted to play JC instead, who was initially a smaller part. So JC's part was pumped up, Christian Bale got star billing, and we got TERMINATOR SALVATION.
Thanks Bilge for the bits of trivia on the original cast of T2. If you know of a site where these stars can read the comments we have, just drop me a line.
I followed some of Ed's movies after he was older but none of them seem to make it to the big box office hits. Hope he and Linda catch some luck later in the movies.

I do not like any of Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. I don't think he is a good actor.

I preferred Terminator 3, didn't go much for Christian Bale.
