This Memorial Day, the Time Has Come to Ask - Who's the Greatest War Movie Hero?

tournament_westernheroes.jpg When nations clash, some individuals discover their true heroic nature among the impossible ethical dilemmas and strategic pitfalls of battle. Victory comes in many forms -- what would George C. Scott's gruff General Patton think of Vietnam-era grunts like Platoon's Charlie Sheen? The following eight heroes have only just begun to fight for your votes, competing on a level field for the ultimate cinematic Medal of Honor.

There are great war movies, run silent run deep,
the lost battlion, tiger shark, battle hymn, in harms way,and lots more. you show the same ones all the time.

Your choices for greatest movie war heroes have some great films and stars listed, but did not see the "greatest movie war hero ever" listed, so did not bother voting. Have met so many over the years that joined the Marines because they wanted to be like John Wayne as Sgt Stryker in The Sands of Iwo Jima. Have never met any that ever stated they joined the military because they wanted to be like any of the people you listed.

I suppose some of these actors played interesting characters in film, but a true war movie hero would be someone who truly believed in what he was portraying. John Wayne and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy come to mind. I found their work in film believable. I knew John W. loved his country!

How annoying is it when AMC pops up ads on top of the German speaking "closed captioning" is being displayed.

hello: i know there are a lot of movie star war heros," i have only one war hero. he wasn't an actor. he was my father. corporal victor schutzius. with the 242nd rainbow division. he was in the spearhead of the bulge and was captured. i heard first hand how war was hell. with a cancer to battle, memories of the war haunting him along with other problems. he took his life in 1986. he is still greatly missed. he served his country greatly. thankyou

Thanks for sharing your story, Nick!

I agree with joshua. The first person that comes to most peoples minds when asked who is the greatest war movie hero is John Wayne, then Audie Murphy. These two men portrayed the character that most all fighting men strived to achieve. I also respect nick1954 fathers contribution.
Thanks, oh and OOOORAAAA!

Audie Murphy isn't listed. Therefore, I refuse to vote. Hell, John Wayne didn't even serve. If I had to vote for another actor who played a war hero (other than Murphy as himself), it would be Gary Cooper as Alvin York. Most of the other war characters are fictional. Patton, of course, was real and perhaps a great general but hardly a war hero.

About a comment above......I also resent the advertisement crawlers, captions or not. I also hate the split-screens or accelerated credits crawl. I think the credits are more important that the host banter. Another suggestion, that they have a place to send or post such complaints.

THE greatest movie war hero is Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy. He not only did the real deed, he played himself in the movies.

Next is hard to explain, but it's Alton Glenn Miller. A successful swing bandleader, Miller joined the armed forces to do his duty (while all the other popular bandleaders stayed home, made money and did war bond drives) and paid the ultimate price for his heroic decision. Then there's James Stewart, who also served in World War II but came back to portray Captain Miller in the Glenn Miller Story.

Tom Hanks is, IMHO, the best of the civilian actors for his role in Saving Private Ryan. He at least portrayed a real soldier rather than a character dreamed up by some Hollywood hack script writer.

The other people in the polls, though great actors in their own right, are merely wannabes, and can't even hold a candle to the real hollywood folk who actually served their country at risk of their own lives.

Also, let us not forget Gary Cooper, who brilliantly portrayed Sgt. Alvin York.
