they cannot better this original...

I have watched this film over and again since I was a kid. I never get tired of it, to me it's the best Sci-Fi movie of it's type ever. They really got this one right back in a day when there were no CGI special effects. It is a shamed we could not have done better with the remake. Some times we can go over board with special effects.

I watched this movie as a child; thrilled and frightened; hiding behind my father, peaking out when I dared.. One of my best childhood memories. Still makes me 'tingle'. This movie challenges your imagination. It made you look 'up' when exposed to the night sky.

Hollywood should not spend it time and money on re-gilding classics with new special effects. Their efforts would be better placed in paying good writers to create great sequels.

By the way - any serious producer seeking a creative treatment or script on another '50s scifi classic contact me at info@nauke.org

during the movie there was a trivia ?...when the power was out not only was the boat moving ,but in the times square shot there was a billboard flashing on the right side of the screen

default userpic

During the commercial break a question was ask what is different about the 2 pictures. The boat moving was the answer but we dont know if the boat was carring a sick person to the hospitol or something else as no power was stopped if it had to stay on for certain reasons as hospitols, airplanes atec so no one died. The difference I saw was the daylight in Paris should have been around 7pm since the power stopped at noon in DC.

good observation,terry531

Aarrgghh...I love the original sooo much that I'm sure the newest remake will not be able to stand up to it (though I will see it). I agree with the other poster that Hollywood should have done a SEQUEL to the original...something like, we still haven't taken care of the environment as we were warned to, and the space beings come back to teach us another lesson in stewardship.

This movie is definitely my favorite. I am a classic sci-fi fan! I was born the year it came out. This and "Forbidden Planet" are the pinnacle of great sci-fi. I watch them over and over. I keep wishing Gort had just gone ahead and destroyed the planet.

AMC needs to consider removing the stupid quiz show. It is highly irritating and quite pointless

So many of the best films were made almost 50 years ago. Couldn't the Hollywood bean counters take a chance on a sequel. Release the new film with a rerelease of the original so that new generations may experience them on the big screen as many of us loyal fans had.. The baby boomers would insure that the seats were filed.

I find it interesting that when Klaatu was in Walter Reed Hospital and the doctors were discussing his age (78) and the advanced life expectancy on his planet (130). They were wondering how this could be achieved...as the lit up cigarettes. I wanted to scream out to them. First stop smoking! That should add about ten years or more to your life expectancy.

I first watched this movie when I was just a kid and memorized "Gort. Klaatu barada nikto" and remembered it for years, just in case...

I saw the "THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL" when it first showed 50 years ago, when I was13.

My husband reminded me while we were watching this that in "Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness" those three words are used... Klaatu barrata nikto!!!

Ha!

I've always liked this movie. I 've watched it over and over. I always wondered why, in the script, the military didn't have a photo of him to put in the newspaper? They got some good xrays. It kind of made the military look dumb. The quiz was okay and it was designed to do just what it is doing. Getting us to comment here.

during the trivia question about what is wrong in this scene, power went out in washington d.c. at 12:30 p.m. Then it showed all the cities around the world, then showed russia which also was still daylight, there is a 8 hour time difference from washington D.C. to moscow.

Beside the boat and the sign, the one thing I found curious was that he asked her the time in the elevator and she said it was 12:30. Why did her watch run during those 30 minutes?
One of the best movies ever! on so many levels. Style, Photography, Story, Message.

Making the military look dumb is what the movie is all about.

WHEN I WAS A KID BACK IN 1951 I LIVED A COUPLE OF BLOCKS FROM LOCK MARTIN.(GORT) THE FIRST TIME I SAW HIM IN HIS FRONT YARD I WANTED TO RUN AS I WAS SCARED TO DEATH. HE LATER WAS THE PARKING GUARD AT THE VAN NUYS BOB'S BIG BOY IN VAN NUYS. ALSO WENT TO SCHOOL WITH HIS DAUGHTER BARBARA AND SON DALTON. I HAVE THIS MOVIE ON DVD AND PROBABLY HAVE SEEN IT 2 DOZEN TIMES. THE REMAKE COMING OUT MAY BE GOOD BUT IT WON'T BE LIKE THE ORIGNIAL .I MET PATRICIA NEAL AT MY BEST FRIENDS BIRTHDAY PARTY IN NOV. OF 2007 AND WE SAID "KLAATU BARADA NIKTO" TOGETHER AND LAUGHED

Her watch kept running because it was not electrically powered.

default userpic

The thing about her watch still running Nikto. In 1950 the watches were wind-up, not electric... and the power went out at 12:00 hagnasty.

default userpic

In the hospital he was in room 306 not 309 as he said in the movie I just love this movie every time it comes on I will watch it and I have it on my Ipod hope the new one is good

THANK YOU AMC for playing this true classic. Great film!! No re-make will take its place, new movies now a days focus on special effects vs telling a good story and capturing the emotions and suspense from great actors. I was so pleased to see this was coming out on AMC that my kids sat down and were glued when they seen Gort the robot and they loved the spaceship, not to mention I did too!!

Please continue to play these great movies!!

This is a great movie and part of the trivia I remember about this movie is that it came out one day before my birth date on September 28, 1951. After having seen the trailers for the re-make, I am not sure it will live up to the original. But I will go see it anyway.
