Talk Forum: What You're Saying
The Talk forum this week had Cinemania on the brain. Last week's episode on Die Hard prompted Chris Spicer, one of the fan contestants, to write: "The modern day big budget action film has devolved into a CGI bender that emphasizes visual spectacle over all else. It's the cinematic equivalent of a fireworks display; pretty while you watch it, and completely forgettable after it's over. What really set Die Hard apart was the care taken to develop its characters and their relationships." To this AMC's own Alex Zalben replied, "I think there are very few perfect scripts out there, and Die Hard is one of them... Not a moment is wasted. Watching the movie a second time, you see how every element of the film is set up efficiently in the first ten minutes, from the characters, to the set pieces; everything that happens or is said plays a part."
Meanwhile this week's episode had the Cinemania contestants explaining why Jurassic Park is a worthy future classic. "No denying it. 'JP' raised the special effects bar - and not just with the new digital innovation," wrote timsheridan. "Even the practical special effects are of a caliber never before seen in cinema." He went on to praise the film's casting, its themes, and of course Steven Spielberg. "And don't forget 'eating a lawyer in the portapotosity'," opined Geoff Hoff. Maggie Lehman, the other Cinemania contestant, explained the film's philosophical appeal: "Jurassic Park sends out a very powerful message," she said. "We're getting more and more powerful with what we are capable of...When have we gone too far? Where should the line be drawn? When should we allow mother nature to do her part?"
