Talk Forum: What You're Saying
The Future of Classic Talk forum this week is wondering if any actor could hope to fill John Wayne's boots. McGillicuddy offered up Russell Crowe and Christian Bale as candidates ("and I don't just mention those two because they were both in the 3:10 to Yuma remake," he wrote), but dizzy would have none of it: "Good lord... Russell Crowe the next John Wayne? I'd love to hear your reasoning for that suggestion, because right now I'd say it's insulting the Duke to put those two in the same sentence."
Dizzy offered Heath Ledger as a possibility, but chrispykid said there's no chance of anyone hoping to compare: "It's not about what John Wayne did or what other actors have the potential to do. There will never be another John Wayne because no other actor will ever be able to represent what he represented. He represented pure uncomplicated Americana: rugged, self-made, and unflinchingly and unquestioningly patriotic." Chrispykid went on, however, to nominate Clint Eastwood as a possibility, "if you pressed me."
