VS.Poll: The Greatest Cowboys Ever

Cowboytile In this AMC Versus Poll, we've selected sixteen classic cowboys from some of the best Westerns ever: Blondie in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; Harmonica, in Once Upon a Time in the West; the Ringo Kid in Stagecoach; and more.

These guys are always brave, often conflicted, and sometimes willing to do wrong in order to make things right. They prefer to ride alone, but they are our heroes, reminders of the frontier spirit of America in its youth.

You must decide: Who's the greatest cowboy ever?

It's impossible to vote. They are both the best you can find in the western genre.

the greatest cowboy has to be between Randolph Scott and Audie Murphy. But I love to watch them all. The only problem is that I don't get enough of them. I would like to see you take one cowboy and do his movies all weekend. Also I would like to see more cowboy and indian movies. I cann't wait for Saturday to roll around.

Thank You

It's between Ringo Kid and Ethan Edwards overall for me at least but in voting it came down between Blondie and Ethan and I chose the Duke because in my opinion he's the best no matter what cowboy character he is

Eastwood.

John Wayne, hands down. C'mon give us a tough choice!

I think fans and western movie goers that know Cowboys know John Wayne is the man!

The greatest? The Duke, because he was so believable. A very, very close second is Clint. Two different styles, yet both great!

Both are good, but in anything, the second to come around would never be there if not for the groundbreaking the first did, but still many polls get votes from viewers who only vote for what they grew up with, and don't appreciate the shoulders that their heroes stood on. John Wayne wins...no-brainer.

Are you SERIOUS.....John Wayne is the best and always will be the BEST Cowboy EVER!!!!

John Wayne's my first choice, but didn't think I noticed a mention of Roy Rogers. I grew up seeing plenty of those reruns and know he was a favorite of my father's generation. This post also came to mind this morning hearing (radio) that Joe Namath would be graduating from UA this weekend. Couldn't help but think he would've made a great cowboy along with former UA coach Gene Stallings. Bear woulda' made a great sheriff/bounty hunter. Been in the desert too long. Seeing mirages. Mind roaming with the buffalo...

One word DUKE!! This was a no-brainer.

The answer is simply Gary Cooper.

no 1 smokes a fool like clint. john might be a little older but clint would kick the the shit out of john wayne. the out law josey wales speakes 4 its self.

The Duke is the best cowboy ever. Come on. I like Clint but even he knows that John Wayne would have been an ass-kicking president! Unlike Clint , The Duke would have never settled on being a mayor! Again, Clint is good but the Duke is great! Clint you're still alive. How about another "Dirty Harry" or kick-ass western? The best Western ever is "True Grit." Now, that's hands down.

The Duke is the greatest cowboy ever! He lived by a creed and the law of morales. He was an honorable man and a hero to generations. I want to be a man like that!

Clint Eastwood, John Wayne tied

Th most important thing to me about just who was the Greatest Cowboy Actor Ever was the versatility and how unassuming they were. If you remember, "Marion Morrison" got his start at 19 years old learning to ride and stunt from the immortal Yakima Canutt, who played his rival in most of the old Black and Whites and moved up to "The Three Musketeers." Who else could have played opposite Walter Brennan, Andy Devine, Dean Martin, and the immortal Montgomery Clift and still have such a commanding presence. I rest my case......

John Wayne, by far, is the best American cowboy icon!
