Costner Goes West With Duvall
Open Range (tonight on AMC at 8:30 p.m. ET | 7 p.m. C) is made for Western fans who like their cowboy flicks epic and full of big sky. Set during the dramatic range wars of the late 1800s, the movie depicts the struggles of cattle herders who end up in a gun fight with inhospitable townsmen along the way. Some trivia regarding the movie: Kevin Costner turned down a role in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 to make Open Range with Robert Duvall, for whom he has deep respect. Then during the shoot, Costner suffered a ruptured appendix. Although that sounds like doom, it all turned out well in the end as Costner's investment of his own money (and talent) in the production led to one of the most well-remembered Westerns of the last decade.
