25 Movies Added to National Film Registry

8987large

Back to the Future, Bullitt, and Dances With Wolves are among the 25 movies added to the National Film Registry today. Established by Congress in 1989, the NFR seeks to recognize and preserve films that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. Selections are added each year after nominees are generated by the National Film Preservation Board, the Library of Congress's Motion Picture Division, and the general public.

At 475 titles, the Registry's current list now covers a lot of ground. But for something that sounds dusty and academic, the final lineup provides a pretty good map of the populist art form's first century.  You'll find groundbreaking works alongside blockbusters so entertaining that you'd be forgiven for overlooking their artistry. Of the recent additions, a few surprises come simply because it's hard to believe that they weren't included before (12 Angry Men, Grand Hotel, and The Women); others, such as The Sex Life of the Polyp and the student film Peege, are more likely to please hardcore cinephiles.  Take a look at the complete list then rant about what's still missing with a comment below.

Where's "Pennies from Heaven"?

That NFR list is awful, in my opinion. I could name dozens of great films easily that are not included, such as Amadeus, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Breaking Away, Culpepper Cattle Company, Fanny, etc., etc.
