List and VSPoll: Greatest War Movies
Veteran's Day is November 11. Over the decades, brilliant directors have presented us with unforgettable war movies: Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Sands of Iwo Jima, The Longest Day, and Full Metal Jacket to name a few. Not all of these movies have been supportive of war, but all of them have been fully behind the soldiers who have fought for this country.
Which movie has it all: quality cinematography, acting, and story-telling? Which is the most likely to remain resonant and meaningful in the future? The Greatest War Movie Is....
See the movie schedule for the AMC Best Vets on Sunday and Monday.

the war lover with steve mcqueen and robert wagner.
Gentlemen,
Through the years Hollywood has produced several war related films and for a variety of reasons... a morale booster for the folks back home during WW2; for political commentary during Viet-nam.... in all cases the bottom line for Hollywood producing war films is identical to the reason used by governments internationally throughout history for engaging in war... survival, and survival always equates to money.
Did anyone notice that the photo used to accompany the movie "The Thin Red Line" is wrong? The photo used is from "Saving Private Ryan"
Am I wrong?
I think there are many but if I had to pick only one it would have to be "The best years of our lives" made in 1946.The movie had a great story about the soldiers and sailors and what they each had gone thru, with how there family was also affected.Harold Russell a returning Vet who had lost both hands in the war andwon an Academy Award for his role. This is my choice.
Thank you for notifying us about the photo for The Thin Red Line. The photo has been updated with the correct image.
Ok. Maybe not 'the greatest' but I'm watching Heartbreak Ridge at the moment on AMC. And I gotta say - WHAT THE GOSH-DARN IS IT WITH THESE FUDGING VOICE-OVERS?! As if Clint Eastwood as Sgt Hwy would say 'Darn those nasty bad guys. I slapped them in the pooper.' Perhaps not verbatim, but pretty darn close!! We're all whining about the writer's strike!!? Well POOP ON THEM if they're responsible for this GOSH-DARN FUDGE OF A PILE OF POOP voice-over stuff... BRING BACK MY SWEAR WORDS!! (where appropriate)

Battleground
"It's shinin', it's shinin'!"
this is a hard one since there are so many great ones but my top 3 picks would be
WE WERE SOLDIERS
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
TORA.TORA TORA (LOVE THE DOG FIGHT NEAR THE END)
I'd never think that John Wayne would not get my vote for my fav war movie, seeing how he is my favorite Hollywood ICON. But, Vincent is right, "We Were Soldiers", is my pick of the best. Mel Gibson pulls off the authority, charimsa and so many other attributes in this epic tale, making my stomach tighten in knots everytime I watch it. The performances of the leading lady and other supporting actors is all Top Shelf- all deserving awards, including the director and writer.
Other notable mentions- The Deer Hunter, The Fighting Seebees and The Green Berets.
I LIKE SANDS OF IWO JIMA, HELL TO ETERNITY, PORK CHOP HILL, THE HORSE SOLDIERS, FLYING TIGERS.
IN HARMS WAY
BATTLE GROUND
THE ENEMY BELOW
Battleground
All Quiet on the Western Front
Das Boot
"It's Shinin," what a great movie (Battleground) and line. Like to see Chosin Resevoir battle from Korea filmed like Battleground.
