And They Said It Wouldn't Last: Classic Interspecies Romance
Who among us hasn't despaired, at one time or another, of
finding true love? If only we could look
beyond the obvious - other people - and appreciate the opportunities presented
by non-humans. That's just what Tom
Hanks does in Splash, when he meets his
soulmate in the form of mermaid Daryl Hannah.
The hilarious, charming, and surprisingly suspenseful 1984 film, directed by Ron Howard and written by the ace screenwriting team of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (Parenthood, A League of Their Own, EDTV), is showing tomorrow and Monday on AMC.
But finding a fish-lady isn't the only way to go (and Splash
isn't even the only example of it: witness 1989's The Little Mermaid).
