New Breathless DVD the Best Yet

Breath Over the years, there have been various versions of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, the director's landmark first feature, to hit the DVD shelves. But the new version is the best. Says Dave Kehr in The New York Times, "The film is hardly the romantic fantasy that many critics have made it out to be; its true love interest is American movies of the most disreputable sort — it’s dedicated to the Poverty Row studio, Monogram Pictures."

From the rousing jump cuts to the innovative use of a handheld camera to the movie's wild visual style, Godard broke all the rules and shocked Hollywood.

Yes, the two-disc collection is pricey at $39.95. But it includes just about everything a maven would want in a DVD. There are interviews with Godard, Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo, the trailer, an 80-minute making-of documentary, Godard's original scenario, Truffaut's film treatment, a documentary about Jean Seberg, and Charlotte et son Jules, a short by Godard starring Belmondo and shot entirely in Godard's hotel room.
