OK, I admit I'm biased. I'm a fan of Sidney Lumet because he's one of our great filmmakers, sure.  But when he placed a profile I did about him in his book, Interviews, he made me writer-happy forever.  On October 12, Lumet's latest, Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, will debut at the New York Film Festival.  Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney and Marisa Tomei, the film, shot in hi-def video, follows two brothers in serious need of cold, hard cash. The pair decides to rob their own parents' jewelry store, and that's when things begin to fall apart.

The film, a comeback of sort for the genius who made 12 Angry Men, Long Day's Journey Into Night and Dog Day Afternoon, was reviewed by Cinematical's Erik Davis, who says, "At 83 years-old, Lumet still manages to deliver this film in a captivating, edge-of-your-seat fashion. In doing so, he splits it up into fragments (which were in the script, but never clearly defined); the film would follow one character for the three days leading up to the robbery, then we'd backtrack and follow another character on the day of the robbery, followed by yet another the week after the robbery. Each time, little clues are revealed that, for the viewer, eventually add up and piece together just in time to enjoy the gun-wrenching ending that you see coming, but don't want to believe when it finally arrives."  Can't wait to see it.
