FIELD OF DREAMS  airs on Sunday, October 7  @ 8 pm | 7C.
Stay for the enhanced version at 10:15 pm | 9C.

Field of Dreams, showing on AMC throughout the month of October, was nominated in three categories at the 1989 Academy Awards – Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score. It didn't win in any of them, but herewith, some suggestions for other honors due this fine and singular film.

Best use of a cornfield in a major motion picture: Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) turns plowing land into playing land. Blows M. Night Shyamalan's Signs right out of the water and gives Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest a run for its money. (photo: (c) Universal/courtesy Everett collection)

Best guy-cry movie of all time. The genre, testosterone's answer to the chick flick, is crowded with strong entries. "The Today Show" suggests Gladiator, Dead Poet's Society and Saving Private Ryan. "Entertainment Weekly" adds The Shawshank Redemption, My Dog Skip and Brian's Song. But Field of Dreams has baseball, manly mysticism and unresolved daddy issues – the guy-cry trifecta.

To vote in Favorite Baseball Movie poll, see Greatest Baseball Movies photo gallery, and Field of Dreams Trivia, continue reading.

Best reaction to an unwanted visitor: When Kinsella knocks on author Terence Mann's (James Earl Jones) door, Mann growls, "I'm going to hit you with this crowbar until you go away."

Best patient, long-suffering wife: Amy Madigan as Annie Kinsella. Annie joins Beth Gallagher (Anne Archer, Fatal Attraction), Vera Tucker (Joan Allen, Tucker: The Man and His Dream), Alma Del Mar (Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain) and Vickie La Motta (Cathy Moriarty, Raging Bull).

Best chance to actually feel like a character in the film: visit the Lansing family farm in Dyersville, Iowa, where the movie was shot. It's free, it's open through November and it's a fine place to consider why certain characters in the film keep confusing Iowa with heaven.

Think Field of Dreams is also the world's greatest baseball movie?  Vote for it, or against it, in our Greatest Baseball Movies poll here.

I also like The Rookie, starring Dennis Quaid.

It's not necessarily my absolute favorite, but I think that "61" should be on the list too.

default userpic

correction... the correct line in Field of Dreams said by James Earl Jones is "I'm going to beat you with this crow bar until you go away." you must replace the word "hit" with "beat."

default userpic

i definately agree... 61 is a damn good film!!!! one of the greatest baseball movies ever! and can we also remember "For Love of the Game"

default userpic

My favorite baseball movie would be "For Love of the Game" (1999)

default userpic

"The Rookie" should be in this list along with "61". Movies based on actual true stories are always winners.

default userpic

"Long Gone" on HBO in 1987 starring William Petersen (CSI), Virginia Madsen (Sideways) and Dermot Mulroney.

default userpic

I thought the best baseball movie I ever saw was For the Love of the Game, starring Kevin Costner. There have been so few perfect games in baseball history. And the movie was very well balanced with the personal life of the star.

How could you leave that one out?

default userpic

Bingo Long Traveling AllStars and Motor Kings not only has the longest title, but it's one of the top 10. The barnstorming story is quintessential baseball from a bygone era.

default userpic

"Damn Yankees" is the only baseball movie that I can not find in either VHS or DVD format..Does anyone know where "Damn Yankees" can be purchased ??

default userpic

My favorite baseball movie is "For Love of the Game" (1999)

default userpic

There was a movie in the fifties, "It happens Every Spring" with ray Miland as a professor who invents a substance that repels wood. He rubs it on a ball and it can't be hit. I forget the rest. Someone help me on this one. Also, a baseball movie with William Bendix as an ump thet sees double. he is called Two Call Johnson, i think. Still love The Natural and League of Their Own. Bob esler

Add "61" and take off Cobb, which is scarcely about baseball.

default userpic

one of my favorite baseball movies that is not on this list should be rookie of the year you guys should play that one on amc sometime one of the best baseball movies of the 90,s

default userpic

Anyone who was a kid in the sixties has to love the Sandlot. No parents, no coaches, no uniforms, no refreshment stands. Just a bunch of kids who love playing ball and the Babe...

default userpic

"It Happens Every Spring" with Ray Milland has a much more clever premise and is funnier than Bull Durham. The scenes of batters trying to hit the ball are pretty good for 50's special effects.

default userpic

When Shoeless Joe Jackson said "I would have played for free" he pinpointed why so many things have disappeared. He had no agent..no audacious jewelry..no outrageous behavior..just his love for the game. It's sad that the game appears to be over.

default userpic

I think that the Rookie needs to be included on the ballet.

default userpic

Although a great drama with outstanding performances by Kevin Costner & James Earl Jones, and unlike "The Natural" and "The Pride of the Yankees", "Field of Dreams" is hardly what I would call a "baseball movie" in the classic sense.

default userpic

A classic not on list......Fear Strikes Out...Jimmy Pierseal Story

default userpic

not really a fair vote, since in today's me first world, most people dont even know Bang the Drum Slowly

default userpic

Sorry, it's shouldn't even be open to discussion. The Natural was #1 and Field of Dreams #2. Bull Durham?

default userpic

"61" should be on the list. And baseball fans , if you haven't seen 'LONG GONE' you've missed (in my opinion) the best!

default userpic

lets not forget Bingo Long and his traveling all stars. The Sandlot is one of my faves. As well as the original Bad News Bears.

default userpic

Field of Dreams is totally the answer

Rookie, 61*, and maybe even For Love of the Game should be on the list.

default userpic

I also liked "Sandlot", it reminded me of my youth and playing ball with my friends.

Really a good movie for everyone.

default userpic

Pride of the Yankees was a great film but dealt more as a biography of legandary player with baseball as a background.

Field of Dreams is still my favorite with The Rookie coming a close second.

default userpic

Original of "The Babe Ruth Story" with William Bendix. That movie is so shmaltzy it's a thing of beauty. I mean, the crippled boy rising to his feet when the Babe says "Hi kid" as he walks by.

Can't beat it. "Turn the jeers to cheers? All you gotta do is deliver" and whack, another home run.

default userpic

I also like "For Love of the Game" with Kevin Costner. To think that Kevin pitched with no stand-in is incredible. All of his baseball movies are great.

default userpic

My favorite baseball movies are: Fever Pitch, For The Love Of the Game, Bull Durham and of course Field of Dreams

default userpic

Fever Pitch and For the Love of the game are my favorites, I can watch all nite long. Also Field of Dreams whenever it on.

default userpic

I'm a lil' biased ... I'm passionately in lust w/ Susan Sarandon ... so Bull Durham is my favorite. I remember the Babe Ruth movie in B/W. Wasn't it corny? Even as a kid I knew it wasn't 'real'. But somehow, I've managed to miss 'love of the Game', so I'll see if I can find it. Thanks for the tip!

default userpic

a magical movie that will always be the best baseball movie ever made

default userpic

There are so many movies that are not on the list.

*61 has to be one of my favorites, along with A League of Their Own.

The Natural is another good one even though I am not a big Redford fan.

default userpic

Field of Dreams is my favorite, but I also liked for The Love Of The Game.

default userpic

There are too many to not mentioned. The Sand Lot is noticeably missing from your list. If I had to pick from your list it would be Field of Dreams.

default userpic

This is a great compilation to be sure, but there is some mentionable ommisions such as "The Sandlot" and my personal favorite, "61" which I have lost count as to how many times I have watched this movie. That being said, my favorite amongst your list, and I am sure many will disagree with me, is "A League of their Own". I think this movie captures a very unique perspective about the game I so love.

Four classic baseball films did not make your ballot:

"Kill the Umpire"

"Safe at Home"

"It Happens Every Spring"

"The Stratton Story"

The first two are available together on a DVD. They are wonderful baseball movies and great family entertainment. "Kill the Umpire" is a riot and it features William Bendix. The second's biggest "star" is William Frawley, but it features Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle at the height of their success, giving a young fan a lesson in telling the truth.

"Spring" feature Ray Milland and "Stratton" features Jimmy Stewart. All are great films, but I still put "Field of Dreams" and "The Natural" at the top of the list.
