Thornton + Basinger + Crapload O' Stars = Informers
Bret Easton Ellis hasn't been really popular since the release of his debut, Less Than Zero. Along with JMac's Bright Lights, Big City, the ephemeral tome defined coke-coaxed youth culture in the 1980s. But that was then and this is now.
So it came as a surprise to me that Senator is giving B.E.E's The Informers the silver screen treatment. The book of short stories didn't get the best reviews, to put it mildly. In fact, Publisher's Weekly said, "Ultimately, this book is so inconsequential that it should neither vex Ellis's critics nor gratify his fans."
Still, they've convinced Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Brandon Routh and Ashley Olsen to appear in the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Weird, I'd think that the better novel to adapt would be the more recent Lunar Park, B.E.E.'s fictionalized memoir which generally got great reviews. But it's Hollywood, folks. You can't predict it, and, who knows, the film may be a hit. Doubtful, but possible.
