John Wayne's Best Non-Westerns

He's remembered best for the roles that he played in the saddle and on the open range, but John Wayne's versatility extended far beyond the Western. He displayed his range in scores of war movies, disaster movies, and even romantic comedies. His westerns made him famous, his range made him a Hollywood Icon.

Did we leave out your favorite?  Tell us below.

blood alley, sea chase, wake of the red witch, fighting seabees, flying tigers, pittsburgh, long voyage home, are other excelllent non westerns

default userpic

You did leave out some of my favorites. I'm not sure I can pick just one best movie in any John Wayne category. You left out Wake of The Red Witch, Shepherd of The Hills, Donovan's Reef,etc.,etc.

default userpic

True Grit, Come on.

default userpic

they are all 100% in harms way is my best

default userpic

The broad array of characters and the vast expanse of his career makes it difficult to pick only one. You cannot discount any listed and even many that are not. The Fighting Kentuckian (1949), for example, with Oliver Hardy is a great flick. The Quiet of Man, however, is the best overall film along with The Shootist. I only have 75 of his films but I seem to go back to The Quiet Man over and over.

default userpic

I voted for "They Were Expendable", but you left out my favorite "In Harm's Way"

default userpic

You must be kidding ... your list of favorite non-western John Wayne movies does not include "In Harms Way" with Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda, and Carroll O'Connor.

My dad George, would never have understood how that gem of a movie is not on your list. He would have given you a "What For".

The Duke is the Greatest! Right-O!!!

default userpic

One movie that the "Duke" made (non western) I have enjoyed is "Donovan's Reef". It falls in line for entertainment and humor like "The Quiet Man" as well as "Hatari". But over all I have had many years of enjoying John Wayne's movies, be they western, military, or civilian (as in the three mentioned above).

Over all I must say that to watch him in his early years with his serials such as the Three Musketeers or watching him do a story based on real life (Hellfighters), The "Duke will always Reign Supreme!

default userpic

I'm a big hugh western fan and a big "Duke" fan on top of that. But you left so many good one's off the list Chisum, Eldorado, Sons of Katie Elder and on and On. I can usually watch any Wayne movies but when he's in a western i'm glued to the tube even though i've seen most a hundred times and have most on DVD. They just don't make actors like this any more.

default userpic

Pick a favortie John Wayne movie???? Impossible for a true John Wayne fan, i couldn't pick one fav if i had to save the world. He made too many great movies, and i can watch them a thousand times each and enjoy them just as if i seen them for the first time.

JOHN WAYNE, AN TRUE AMERICAN HERO.

default userpic

Donovan's Reef & The Quiet Man are his best non Western & Non War movies

default userpic

I voted for Green Beret, but you also left out Operation Pacific. There is a long list of John Wayne movies you left out, just some, Rio Bravo, Red River, Rio Lobo, and the Horse Soldiers.

default userpic

The next time you have a John Wayne tribute, it would be nice if you could include different movies, instead of playing some of them over. There are so many GREAT movies besides the ones you have listed, Chisum, Rio Bravo, Rio Lobo, Red River, Horse Solders, Harms Way and so many, many more.

default userpic

There are too many to list, but so many better than what you listed.

default userpic

I picked They Were Expendable although all are great and there are others we could add.

What is wrong with America?

We lost our B Western Values. Watch a good old B Western from the 30’s-40’s. Common sense, common decency, knowing the difference between right and wrong, striving to do the right thing, protect the venerable, others over self. Being good and honest was more important than being cool.

Expendable covers that message very well.

John Wayne was human and was certainly not perfect, but his profession was acting and he portrayed what we could all strive for. It is hard to pick a bad JW Movie. I'd watch even the old Lone Star productions over a free ticket to any new movie anyday.

The list of his great films, which can be inspiring, enlightening and entertaining is too vast to list.

He portrayed America as we would like it to be. It is up to us to try to regain the America we desire.

default userpic

I loved him in the Longest Day. It is my all time favorite non western movie of his.

default userpic

Why was The Searchers left out of your poll? This was John Ford and Waynes greatest.

Ern Cli

default userpic

All of the above and everything else the Duke was ever in,including that rarly aired episode of " The Beverly Hillbillies"

default userpic

"In Harms Way" was not included in some of the voting. That is a great film. John Wayne is my all time favorite actor. Not many leading men have been able to compare to Mr. Wayne. I enjoy watching all the John Wayne movies aired on AMC. I watch each weekend to see if one of John Wayne's movies are playing. He was an honest, true American, actor! I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet him in person.

default userpic

Sorry, didn't realize non-western.

Ern Cli

default userpic

I have been a John Wayne fan all my Life and have alot of movies! McClintock, Donavan's Reef, and Angel and the bad man,Chisum, Big Jake. In Harms way! are among my favorites. But I could watch John Wayne movies all day! Corinne.

default userpic

best movie i think is rio bravo but john wayne is such a great actor its hard to pick just one. for non western i would say in harms way is his next best. i have all but 41 of his movies and am still trying to locate the older ones that i dont have.

default userpic

they are ALL GREAT but a few that you missed were The Long Voyage Home, Fighting Seabees,Flying Tigers,Trouble along the way, Pittsburg, Seven Sinners, and many others. anyway thanks amc for doing this keep the John WAYNE movies coming.

default userpic

I love John Wayne from his very earliest movies to his last. But one of my favorites is the Undefeated.

default userpic

The Cowboys & Hatari are also favorites.

default userpic

HUGH John Wayne fan. Love it when the whole weekend is John Wayne. Husband threatens to put me on a "twelve step" program. Best non-western is Donavan's Reef. Best westerns are Rooster Cogburn & the Lady and Rio Bravo. Hey! How can you miss with Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Walter Brennan added to John Wayne?

default userpic

Like everyone else it is very hard to pick just one John Wayne favorite, but I have to say True Grit is my ultimate favorite. I loved the Character Rooster Cogburn and the dialoge was so great.

default userpic

Fighting Seabee's was the best movie

default userpic

The Searchers, and The ALamo along with The Quiet Man are the best of the best!!

default userpic

John Wayne did 164 movies!! No wonder he is a mans' man, a legend, an icon, and most of all An American!!!

default userpic

i like the movei hondo. I like mostly all of john Wayne movies, He's my fovorite actor.

default userpic

JOHN WAYNE IS THE BEST OF THE BEST. THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE HIM PRESIDENT AS HE IS THE MAN EVERY MAN ALWAYS WANTED TO BE. A COWBOY IS IN EVERY MAN BUT HE COULD PLAY EVERY KIND OF A PART IN ANY MOVIE. HIS LAST FILM AS HE WAS DIEING OF CANCER WAS A VERY GOOD THING TO SHOW HIM AS A MAN TO EVERY KID IN THE WORLD NOT JUST A MOVIE STAR. HOLLYWOOD NEVER DID HIM JUSTICE.

WHEN HE COMES ON TV I WATCH HIS MOVIES OVER AND OVER. I HAVE A GOOD AMOUNT OF HIS MOVIES AND BUY THEM AS SOON AS I CAN FIND THEM IN THE STORES. HE NEVER WAS A BAD MAN IN ANY OF HIS MOVIES. IF HE WAS ALIVE TODAY HE WOULD BECOME PRESIDENT AND GO TO ARACK AND CLEAN THE PLACE OUT AS HE WOULD LET OUR ARMY RUN THE WAR NAT THE GOVERMENT LIKE IN VIETNAM. I'AM BEHIND OUR TROUPS 100 PERCENT.LET THE TROOPS RUN THE WAR. AND IT WILL BE OVER SOON.............

default userpic

There were many other non-westerns that were not in your "vote" selection that should have been. One of my favorites was "The Wings of Eagles".

default userpic

I love all of John Wayne's movies! I would have included some others in this non-cowboy genre, for example: The Wings of Eagles and 3 Godfathers.

default userpic

i liked bllod alley!!!!!!

default userpic

How could you leave out "In Harm's Way"

default userpic

I love all of John Wayne's movies.

default userpic

Why leave out "Brannigan"?!

A tough 1970s Chicago cop takes on the London mob with the help of Sir Richard Attenborough and Scotland Yard to return a fugitive.

default userpic

I enjoy all of his movies, but there are two that I watch for all of the time and is is hard to say which is my favorite. Shepard of the Hills and The Quiet Man. My family and I watch these two every time they are on tv. I do have the DVD of The Quiet Man, but have never found Shepard of the Hills as one of his movies for sale in the stores.

default userpic

In Harms Way and the Searchers are my favorites

default userpic

I am an 81 yr. old grandmother and I have loved John Wayne all of my life... I think I was born in the wrong century. He is like a good book and I am an avid reader. I can read the good ones over and over. We always need a HERO and he surely was one.

default userpic

he was a true american icon honesty and truthfulness always were at the forefront of his movies. he has so many enjoyable movies it is hard to pick a favorite but mine would be between the man who shot libery valance and the quiet man. we need more people like him today.

default userpic

whatwas the old 'gingus kahn" movie that he was in with the garb of that day? the onethat he had the little mustach of that day?

default userpic

I am a big fan of John Wayne. I really like Quiet Man and Donovan's Reef. Anything he's in, I watch!

default userpic

I enjoyed everyones comments. John Wayne reaches several generations. The first VCR I bought,I had one tape Rio Bravo. My daugthers are now in their thirties. Not only do they call me when they see it's on, they can match the dialogue.I think I forced them to watch it to often. I am waiting for the next John Wayne to appear I hope to see him. No one can replace him, but I hope someone will show up with his caracter and overall presence.

default userpic

I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND WYH YOU NEVER SHOW THE MOVIE OF JOHN WAYNE IN HARMS WAY

default userpic

I like Hitari !! not much of a script but he(the Duke) looked like he had fun shootin it

default userpic

I also liked The Cowboys very much. like most of his movies, it teaches us moral values as well as entertaining us. We need more of this.

default userpic

Don't forget Donovan's Reef!

default userpic

I also liked The Cowboys very much. like most of his movies, it teaches us moral values as well as entertaining us. We need more of this.

default userpic

I think The Shootist or maybe Rooster Cogburn are his finest work but I seem to watch The Quiet Man every time it's on

default userpic

I can't believe The Sons of Katie Elder

was not on the list, It's one of my many favorites

default userpic

what about Donovan's Reef, Mcclintock, sons of Kate Elder, In harm's way

default userpic

John Wayne played great, strong heroic roles, but many of his best performances were in his comedies. He showed he had a good range in being strong and funny.

"Donovan's Reef" is my favorite. Funny and touching at the same time.

default userpic

I John Wayne. There is not and has not been since his time an actor of his caliber. America is baseball, apple pie, and John Wayne. I always admired the role he did, strong commited, and determined, you never doubted his ability to get the job done. I even own some collector items. My favorite western is The sons of katie elder.

default userpic

john wayne had so many wonderful movies my favorite not listed was "in harms way"

default userpic

Donovan's Reef and In Harm's Way are up there as is Hellfighters. I love him and Maureen O'Hara together period.

default userpic

The Hellfighters is one of his very best non-westerns because it portrays a true life hero, Red Adair. Who put out oilwell fires. I waited on Red in a Casper, WY service station. I can also show anyone where the scenes for South America at the end of the movie where filmed around Casper, WY. John Wayne is also a true life American Hero. He loved this Nation with all his heart. I'v always admired him for that.

default userpic

My favorite was Horse Soldiers, McClintock, and Hatari. Anything with John Wayne has to be great!

default userpic

Ya'll forgot Donovan's Reef and McClintock.

But then, any thing with the Duke is GREAT!!!

default userpic

I chose a movie but I have so many favorites. "They Were Expendable" wasn't on the list. The roles he played reflected his values. I will pick a John Wayne movie before any others. A short story on the man. My husband was stationed in San Diago during Viet Nam. He had a leave and like to frequent out of the way cafe's and bars. He walked into one and sat down with only one other patron in the place. After the other fellow left, the bar tender set my husband up with a good steak and drinks. John Wayne wanted to thank a seaman for his service to his country. That's an american Hero.

default userpic

I agree with everyone. There is not a bad John Wayne movie. It would nice if they made movies like he made now days. My favorites, McClintock, The Quiet Man,

Chisum, Wake of the Red Witch and Blood Alley.

default userpic

There is no way you can pick one my husband and I like watching The Duke in any movie.

default userpic

I didn't note it earlier, because He has made so many Great movies. There should actually be 3 catagories, Westerns, Military, Non Western. My favorite Military movie is "In Harms Way". I have to agree with so many others that state He

didn't make a bad movie. My all time favorite has to be "Fort Apache". That is

of all 3 catagories.

default userpic

Favorite Duke movies

Cowboys & McClintock

default userpic

Angel and the Badman, Rio Bravo....are mine. Favorites but many more..are great and watched over and over again. Too bad his kind are seldom found or appreciated nowadays.

default userpic

"The Green Berets" all the way, man. Sure, it was one of his later movies, but I never tire of watching it.

default userpic

I

like the western Big Jake True Grit

cow boy and india western movie let one week just be weekend of western movie the newes move Pleasej-gwenf@bellsouth.net

default userpic

There were a bunch of really good movies that are not on the list:

Stagecoach, Horse Soldiers, McLintock, In Harms Way, The Searchers and many, many more that I haven't listed. I can watch him all day, every day. Good movies!

default userpic

In our house it's first "In Harms Way", then McClintock followed by Donovans Reef! He was such a stud. We need him back in this world.

default userpic

I have always been a big fan of John Wayne. I like all of his westerns and war movies but one of my real favorites which is hardly ever shown is "Pittsburgh". I do wish this was included in your voting. A lot of people I talk with never seem to remember this movie. Maybe because it isn't shown as much as his other ones.

default userpic

You forgot In Harm's Way. Awesome movie. Also, The High & The Mighty was a terrific movie. Let's face it. The Duke rules!!!

default userpic

In Harm's Way should have been on the list. My second choice would have been Donovan's Reef, then the Hellfighters

default userpic

Back to Bataan, McQ, Brannigan, Blood Alley....These and many more can be added to your current list and those added by others. We have over 125 movies - A B & Serials - How can you possible pick a favorite. I do agree with a previous comment asking for movies that are not shown regularly. What about War Wagon and Back to Bataan.

John Wayne takes you back to a different era when there were family values and people cared about each other.

I have always enjoyed his interaction with children. His face always seemed to smile from his chin to his eyes when he was conversing with a young person.

Thank you John Wayne for all you gave America.

default userpic

I would like to see The Horse Soliders,The Searchers,Rio Lobo, and Rio Grande. We don't see enough of this Man and his wonderful talented Movies. Please take time out and play this Man and his Movies alot more, Please. This Generation needs it,let them see what a REAL MAN was and is. Thank you so very much, Donna D.

default userpic

I have been a John Wayne fan for as long as I can remember. I fell "in love" with him when I was very young, I think I was eight. I have to admit that as a teen, dating, every boy was measured by one yard stick, John Wayne. I jokingly tell my husband that since I couldn't marry John Wayne, I chose the second best, him. I tell him that being second to John Wayne is very good.

default userpic

Picking a favoite JW movie is tougher than the back wall of a shooting gallery.

JOHN WAYNE never made a bad movie. His moral fiber and comitment to excellence are sadly missing today.

There will never be another DUKE

default userpic

John Wayne is my favorite for 50+ years. My personal favorite "Three Godfathers". My son is named Ethan after Ethan Edwards. I have books listing all his movies and have actually seen alot of them. Keep showing them and I'll be watching.

default userpic

The High and the Mighty is my favorite. I just love the way he walks away from the plane. Every movie he ever made was great! He always portrayed a tough guy, but every movie he made has a tender moment or two in it. He aged well in his career and was just adorable as Roster Cogburn. I just wish the Wayne family would release more of his movies. Also, why doesn't one of the televison networks rerun "John Wayne's America." The book is great but having him in front of you can't be beat. Every generation should view it. Isn't it amazing that he is still a top star almost 30 years after his death! And just think--he never had to use vulgar language or take off his clothes to prove he was a real man. Hollywood today would probably make him sick.

default userpic

My fav was "Cowboys"..he worked great with the kids...all his movies are fantastic however.

default userpic

John Wayne was a living legend he was bigger than life. When i think of the real America and the flag John Wayne comes to mind.He has always been my hero and will always be my hero!!

default userpic

I have/still love all his movies (I have approx. 97 of them). He is what every kid wants to be when he grows up and what every old man wishes he had been before he dies. Thanks for the memories.

default userpic

There were only a few I didn't really care for but I just like John Wayne. It wasn't John but the story line I did not like.

default userpic

Trouble Along the Way (1953)

Seems you missed this one... not my favorite but one of my top ten.

default userpic

You left out "Horse Soldiers", "McClintock" "In Harms Way"... toomany to make a choice

default userpic

My favorite is McClintock. It is a great comedy as well as a western and again pairs him with Maureen O'Hara. Of course other greats that you left out were Harm's Way, The Undefeated, and Big Jake. But the real question is: Is there really a bad John Wayne movie.

default userpic

Your lists were very short listed, I don't believe I have ever seen a John Wayne movie that wasn't the best.

** the John Wayne movie I'm watching at anytime is the best of his movies while I'm watching it - and - the next one I watch is the best of his movies, etc and so on.

In other words, John Wayne only made great movies. I grew up on his movies, and raised my sons on his movies and will continue with my grandchildren.

default userpic

You left out In Harm's Way and Donovan's Reef. One is excellent example of drama and the other is excellent example of his wit and humor. How do you just pick one Wayne movie? It is an impossibility. He was so versatile, talented, and presented the persona of everyone's idea of the true American, which, I believe, in "real" life he was.

default userpic

I have loved John Wayne since the early 50's. What's not to love. He was strong, always was the hero and a true reflection of an American. How about "the Three Godfathers" What a great film. I also loved Harry Carey Jr.'s singing in that film. Stories like that will always be in fashion.

A.Korsick

default userpic

How can you possibly pick just one? As soon as you do five others come to mind and they are all great! I grew up watching John Wayne movies with my dad (who was just one year younger) and I can't think of the Duke without also thinking of dad.

default userpic

Donovan's Reef was a great one, fun to watch and made you laugh. The Dark Command was a good one, also In Old California, The Fighting Kentuckian are a few that stared John Wayne that has not been mentioned. Also not mentioned were Circus World, Train Robbers, Comancheros, Cahill US Marshall, The Spoilers, The Flame on Barbary Coast, The War Wagon, The Tycoon was a non western that was good also. Not only these but his "B" Movies also. If I could vote for his most favorite I would vote for them all.

Just face the fact He is a true Loved American Icon. He started in a non western that had Nancy Olsen and James Arness is also, but I can't remember the name of it.. Darn... How sad I can't remember that movie

default userpic

the searchers

default userpic

My favorite movie, which was not listed was the shootist.

default userpic

I love True Grit, Quiet Man, McClintock not to mention Hatari! These are some of the classics that kids need to watch today.

default userpic

In Harms Way is my favorite movie that he made. It is a difficult choice as there are so many.

default userpic

"The Alamo" was the best John Wayne movie for me, and I have been a John Wayne fan since the 1940's. They are all good or great, not a bad one.

default userpic

I love so many of the Duke's movies and watch them when ever I can. There are times that I say the lines with the actors. He had a wonderful touch for comedy in several movies both Western and non-Western.

It is impossible to pick just one, one dozen, maybe.

default userpic

Definitely missed by omitting In Harm's Way, and my all-time favorite, McLintock and in a pinch, Big Jake. Loved the movies with his son Patrick and his stand-bys like Paul Fix and the others that were repeatedly in his movies. Seemed like he always took care of his friends.

default userpic

I love so many of the Duke's movies and watch them when ever I can. There are times that I say the lines with the actors. He had a wonderful touch for comedy in several movies both Western and non-Western.

It is impossible to pick just one, one dozen, maybe.

default userpic

Being part Irish the Quiet Man will always be my favorite movie. He has always been my favorite actor. I am a fan of westerns and loved John Wayne's westerns.

default userpic

my personal favorite has got to be mclintock,it always brings back memories of my grandpa he was always watchin john wayne movies and i can still see him laughing while watchin that movie

default userpic

Who made this list anyways? A non- Wayne fan, if there is such a preson? So many better films that you could of listed...

default userpic

I love all the John Wayne movies. I started watching them with my dad when I was a child. My sister wasn't interested in them, but I was. What about El Dorado? Red River always haunted me, but I loved it! Just can't choose one as my favorite!

default userpic

What were ya thinking, leaving out..In Harms Way! My all time favorite and a star cast of people. I think we need a revote. And one more thing...how bout showing his movies more often.

default userpic

I like all john Wayne movies

default userpic

You did not list the best movie of all, NON-WESTERN or otherwise. It is "IN HARMS WAY".

Thank You

default userpic

John Wayne never made a bad movie and to pick a favorite is almost impossible, but Hatari and Hellfighters are right at the top of my list with Rio Bravo and McClintock a close second. I have been known to stay up late or get up early to watch all four of them when their being showed even though I have them on DVD and can watch them anytime I want. Please feature John Wayne movies more often and if you could add my favorites to your frequent play list that would be GREAT!!!

default userpic

I have many John Wayne movies. My favorite is McClintock, and the next favorites are those he did with Maureen OHara such as the Quiet Man. Those two had great chemistry when they were together in the movies.

default userpic

My all time favorite is Wings of Eagles.

There is no one like the Duke & there never will be.

default userpic

Thanks for honoring a true American hero, but next time try, Mclintock, Chisum, In Harms Way(what a cast) and The Undefeated.

default userpic

There are so many of John Wayne's movies that are my favorites - - especially Sea Chase, Donovan's Reef, Horse Soldiers, North to Alaska just to name a few. Sea Chase is so seldom played. Sure would like to see it more often.

default userpic

There were many wonderful non western movies left off the list: 1-Seven Sinners (J.W.in navy whites-yum) 2-Wake of the Red Witch (one that always makes me cry)and very romantic! 3-Pittsburg and I could go on and on.

default userpic

I can't believe you left out "In Harms Way!"

default userpic

John Wayne has been my hero since I was a little girl. My favorite movie which is not listed is McLintock. Then I would place The Cowboys, Big Jake and Chisum among other movies. I hope they would more of John's movies on the list to vote.

default userpic

I Loved The Quiet Man, Hatari, North to Alaska, Donavan's Reef, and the one where

he protriade "Spig Weed". I can't remember the name of that one.

default userpic

Where is "In Harms Way" did you just overlook it? It is one of my favorite Wayne War Movies. But there are many not on your list. How can you poll be a good one when you leave really great movies off the original list?

default userpic

My favorites are not listed. First is Hatari(love the sound track, can listen to it over and over),then comes Donavans Reef, McClintock, the more I think about it not one of his movies are not boring and is watchable over and over love Quiet Man,Son's of Katie Elder,Cahill. Just the right leading ladies for the films. I would tell my son when he was little that he was John Wayne's love child(just kidding, just kidding). As a Adult today my son will tease me about him being John Wayne's love child, when ever a John Wayne movie comes on. Is there any Actors today that comes close to John Wayne?

default userpic

By far and away John Wayne's best movie is "In Harm's Way". How could you have left it off of either list? Put it on your list and try again.

default userpic

I love all John Wayne's movies. He was one of the Great's. Too bad we don't have actors like that now.

default userpic

John Wayne stands for everything good in a man and in a person. His strength, courage honesty and soft heart should be a lesson for all mankind.

default userpic

I have also been a John Wayne fan since I

was a teenager,I'am 72 now,and every day&

night I watch his videos, because most of the time there is'nt any thing good on.I can't pick any one because I love them all!! I have five pictures, and a set of

postage stamps on my wall.I wish you would

show more of his movies instead the same

ones over and over.

Thank you sencerly

What happened to In Harms Way with the Duke and that wonderful lady Patricia Neal? You all need to get on the ball.He made several Non Westerns that are beyond awesome.I think my all time favorite will be The Quiet Man.I was blessed and fortunate yesterday (Labobr Day) to watch the fantastic John Wayne Tribute or Marathon, which ever you care to call it.So thanks a million for a day and night of pure enjoyment and great mix of The Duke's Movies. Please do this again so I can see the ones I missed while I had to be away. God bless America and God bless you.

Blessings and greetings from Texas.............P.L.Howell

default userpic

default userpic

There are so many John Wayne movies that I like that it is impossible to name one that I like more than the others. I always watch any movie of his that is showing.

default userpic

His best all-time film was, is and always will "The Wake of the Red Witch"!

default userpic

Just like Hollywood you left

out to many of his movies.

He was the Best Actor!

default userpic

The Quiet Man a classic among classics. I am a dual Irish and American citizen and my family lives very close to the filming sites of the 1952 movie. I have visited them often and enjoy the movie each time I see it. So many films were made by John Ford and John Wayne and the regular troop of actors you see in many of Mr. Waynes films.

default userpic

my favorite movie is EL DORADO,like his westerns more than the others, but all his movies are good.

default userpic

You need a month devoted to John Wayne and show all of his movies from the first one, "Mother Macree" to his lastone, "The Shootist". My favorite Western is The Searchers, Non Western is The Quiet Man, War movie is The Green Berets. I also enjoy seeing his movies with his family in them.

default userpic

It's hard to pick one movie as best, but we would start with "The Searchers", "Red River", "Quiet Man", "McClintock" and "The Shootist". Each of these should have won an Oscar for him. We would appreciate your playing the early movies so that we can see them.

default userpic

I have so many favorites. I'll just list a few . Hondo,The Sands of Iwo Jima,The Searchers, Rio Grande and The Quiet Man.Also a documentory called No Substitute for Victory.I'm 43 and have always been a fan.My wife is a fan .Also my daughters ages 15 and 6.I know a couple fans who won't watch the Duke die in his movies. He stood for everything American, courage ,strength, resolve,do what is right no matter the cost.No actor will ever replace John Wayne!

default userpic

Great John wayne movies...I can narrow it down to about 30, but after that it is a toss up

default userpic

MY FAVORITE JOHN WAYNE MOVIE IS HONDO.I AM FIFTEEN AND HAVE BEEN A FAN FOR SEVERAL YEARS.I EVEN USED TO BE "IN LOVE"WITH THE DUKE A FEW YEARS AGO!I ALSO ENJOY "ISLAND IN THE SKY","WAKE OF THE RED WICTH","ANGEL AND THE BADMAN","FLYING LEATHERNECKS","SHEPARD OF THE HILLS","THE DARK COMMAND","ALLEGHENY UPRISING","THE SEARCHERS","THE QUIET MAN","BACK TO BATAAN",AND ON AND ON!MY DAD DUBBED "TRUE GRIT"ONTO A DVD AND LEFT OUT THE LANGUAGE.FUNNY,ACTION PACKED,AND TOUCHING.DEFINATELY ONE OF HIS BEST PERFOMANCES!JOHN WAYNE COULD WOOP THE IMMORAL ACTORS OF TODAY"TO A FRAZZLE"HE MADE JESUS HIS LORD BEFORE HE DIED AND HE IS IN HEAVEN NOW."GOD BLESS AMERICA",AND"LONG LIVE THE DUKE!"

default userpic

McClintoch was another favorite and Donavan's Reef

default userpic

The Shootist has to be his best acting role.

Island in the Sky has the Duke crying. 2nd best acting role.

My favorites are In Harms Way and Rio Bravo.

Too many great movies to pick a favorites list.

default userpic

People ... notice this is the non-western list. The western list is on the other page. :)

default userpic

McLintock and In Harm's Way were missing and they are two of my favorite John Wayne movies

default userpic

DONOVAN'S REEF !!!

default userpic

I think my favorite of all time is Shpard of the hills. Too bad they don't make movies like that anymore.

default userpic

The Searchers is by far and above a classic western by a movie legend. It ranks right up there with Shane as one of my favorite westerns. A man alone fighting both his past and prejudices against Native Americans. An oscar worthy performance better than True Grit.

default userpic

All of John Waynes movies are winners, but I've always loved Circus World the best and consider my self lucky that I still working copy. It would be great to see it shown again on TV.

default userpic

wasnt north to alaska considered a western

default userpic

Any movie with Maureen O'Hara would rank at the top for me. They have humor, pathos, drama, you name it. Thanks for running some of them this week. Sue

default userpic

I've seen so many of his movies via either purchase or TIVO-ing John Wayne...from AMC to TCM to the Western Channel and History, etc. He's the greatest. I loved him when I was younger, but it took "maturing" to really appreciate him...I can watch any of his movies...and watch them over and over...

default userpic

This blog was so nice I returned tonight. I think it is the ONLY blog I have ever read that was NICE--no ugly words or negative comments! Shows you the influence John Wayne had on us! My s-i-l teases me about my love for JW. We have a standing bet that I can find at least 4 of his movies playing on TV each week. So far I am the winner! HE is still the MAN.

default userpic

There are so many John Wayne movies I love, but I think my all time favorite combines drama, humor, and some memorable movie lines: Big Jake. All throught the movie, when somebody finds out his name, they all say "I thought you was dead?"..And John Wayne's great reply?: "Not Hardly". Ahh..That's how I remember him. And will I ever tire of John Wayne?..not hardly....

default userpic

Why can't you stay with movies instead of others shows, ex madman, its bad enough you have commercials

default userpic

John Wayne portrayed all that being a man was.

From The Searchers to the Shootists.

He wore the white hat, the black hat, and various shades of gray; but he always was someone that raised the bar for everyone else.

One line that always stod out, was "Go for your guns, ya sons-of-a-bitchs".

It was suggested and I agree. You need to do different series's.

Western

Military

Non-Western (which could cover a lot of series, by it's self.

default userpic

I agree with several others - what about In Harms Way? One of the Duke's best.

default userpic

All of John Wayne's films were special. It

would be difficult to choose just one. As a 68 yr old of Irish ancestry it would have to be "Quiet Man". Never could figure

out how he managed to adopt my sense of values since he is so much older than I.

default userpic

John Wayne has been my Mothers Hero for 84 years and mine.I have almost every film he has ever made. My favorie is North To Alaska. Each one is great and I cherish them all. He is the best, a true American Icon

default userpic

Need to add Donavan's Reef to the list. He and Lee Marvin are great together (Man who shot Liberty Valance, The Comancheros, to name a few others that they both starred in)

default userpic

I love John Wayne as everyone that knows me knows. Why in the world has CIRCUS WORLD no longer around. What has happened to it? All of his movies are family oriented. Even kids can watch them. He will always be a big part of our history.

default userpic

Donovan's Reef!!!

default userpic

I love Johb Wayne in everything he had made. It's impossible to name just one.He is truly an American hero in my book. Wish he was still here to make "good" movies.

default userpic

I am not fond of his very early pictures but I have to admit that I feel that he never made a bad movie. I love them all. He was the epitome of the hero and a role model for all. I can sit and watch his movies for hours and never get sick of them. Why aren't movies of today made like his and suitable for all to watch? Where are the real heroes?

default userpic

In Harms Way was my favrit non westen and True Grit favrit western.......

default userpic

I find it difficult to choose a favorite John Wayne movie. Between the great western movies from Stagecoach to The Shootist. Then we have his entire military movie collection. However, I picked The Quiet Man. The hero always prevails. I know which ever movie you choose, its a great film. John Wayne is an American Hero in a day and age when America could use more people like him. John Waynes' characters stood for strength, honesty, loyality, and that makes him a Legend, both on & off screen.

default userpic

How come the best movie he ever made is not mentioned and that would be El Dorado?

I love The Duke and have grown up on his movies but El Dorado is the best of all time!!!!

I been a Duke fan for many years. Many people don,t realize the total box office of his movies is astounding. Remember there were alot of Duke movies when it only cost $.10 to $.50 to go to the movies. They estemate his box office at over $1billion. Hondo is particlarly a good movie with great dialogue. The addition of Geraldine Page(her screen debut) was excellent. My all time favorite is The SEachers. Duke with John Ford directing and all the whole group. Ken Curtice, Ward Bond, Ben Johnson,Mose, and even a young Patrick Wayne.

Rio Grande and Mclintock were not listed. They should be listed with the others. They are a couple of the best.

default userpic

You forgot the Flying Leathernecks for the non westerns and EL Dorado for the western they were great movies also.

default userpic

John Wayne is the Icon that represents the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. He is the American flag, apple pie and CocaCola. All that was good about the good ole USA. And you cannot really say that one of his movies are any better than the other, but one left off the non western poll that I was fond of was IN HARMS WAY, but as I said you have to like them all if your a generation born AMERICAN.

default userpic

You left out his best work!!

The Horse Soldiers

Rio Grande

Fort Apache

default userpic

I agree with Big Jake. That is probably my all-time favorite. Also, I need to make a plug for The Wake of the Red Witch--and unusual film, and beautifully filmed. Wayne gives us a fully-realized character who is ambiguous and complex.

default userpic

One of my favorites is The Cowboys, John Wayne molding young kids into men on the cattle drive. I personaly think all movies by the Duke are #1.

default userpic

My favorite John Wayne movie has always been "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance " but, its not his best because he has too many great movies to choose from, That is why he's the DUKE end of story

default userpic

My best is Donovans Reef

default userpic

What about RIO GRANDE?

default userpic

I have only seen it once on TV but I know it was one or his greatest movies......Mclintock

default userpic

To ask a true John Wayne fan to pick his favorite Duke film is like asking a man to choose his favorite child.

As a man who has over 125 Duke movies I can honestly say I have seen them all equal numbers of times.

Do we ignore the "B" movies and make a choice solely on films made after Stagecoach? Do we look at the older Duke say just the 60's or 70's? What about the box office disasters?

Dakota, The Wings of Eagles, Circus World, Tycoon, Tall in the Saddle, Without Reservations, Brannigan, The Train Robbers, The Sea Spoilers, Pittsburgh, Reap the Wild Wind, ad infinitum. What always amazed me was that John Wayne had to wait until 1969 to finally receive the Academy Award! Considering that the "Oscar" is voted upon by actors, directors, producers, etc., and you would be hard pressed to find a single one that ever had a bad thing to say about the Duke, it boils down to politics I suppose. John Wayne movies always have and always will entertain the public, and the Academy seems to prefer to vote for those that entertain themselves.

I agree that beyond Oscars, ratings, and everything else, the one award that I believe John Wayne would have been most proud of was the simplest. Maureen O'Hara picked the right words to have engraved on the Medal of Freedom, "JOHN WAYNE-AMERICAN".

default userpic

My Gramy loves John Wayne and so do I. I watch them with her. My favorite movie is Hatari. Some of the other ones are real good too, but this is my favorite.

default userpic

The Quiet Man. Wow! Talk about romantic chemistry between Sean Thornton and Mary Kate! One of the most sensual scenes ever filmed is them kissing during the rain storm in the cemetery, with their clothes on I might add! They don't make movies like this anymore and that is a shame!

default userpic

"In Harm's Way" has been viewed on VHS (and worn out) and replaced with DVD. This Wayne movie is one of the few movies that are better than the book. My wife and I seem to watch this John Wayne movie more often than any of his other efforts.

default userpic

In Harms Way has to be one of the best John Wayne non-western.

default userpic

While the Quiet Man is good and They Were Expendable is a greatly under appreciated and very realistic portrayal of the PT Boat war in the Pacific, my vote goes for The Wings of Eagles. John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Ward Bond, Dan Duyrea all in technicolor figting, loving and flying early navy planes. What more could ask for?

default userpic

In Harm's Way - how could you forget?!?

default userpic

In Harm's Way - how could you forget?!?

default userpic

Why isn't "McQ" mentioned that much? It showed, along with "Brannigan" that John Wayne could play a contemporary character, even at his advanced age. Both movies were basic Western plots moved to the modern day; it's the Duke as Dirty Harry. The final car chase along the beach in "McQ" I think is a classic.

default userpic

I can watch JW movies over and over again, some you did not mention

Wings of Eagles

The Undefeated

Wings of Eagles is a classic with his fave co-star Maureen Ohara.

default userpic

There are so many excellent John Wayne movies, it is hard to vote on just one, and yes, you left many others out. The Duke has been and always will be the best!

default userpic

In Harms Way was no doubt one his finest performances.

default userpic

i haven't seen the one where john wayne plays the part of genghis khan; susan hayward co-stars. i think it was the barbarian.

i also enjoy......

barbarian and the geisha,

fort apache and

in harm's way.

default userpic

John Wayne , Loved and invested alot in the Historical " THE ALAMO " with his Son Patrick Wayne , Richard Widmark as "Bowie". It's difficult to see the "Duke" die at the end , but "Heroes" go with a lump in our throats as the "Duke" died at the end of the " Shootest".The " ALAMO " says alot.Thankyou.

default userpic

I MAY NOT HAVE SEEN SOME OF THE DUKE'S EARLIER MOVIES BUT I HAVE SEEN ALL OF HIS NEWER ONES AND ONE THAT ALWAYS GETS LEFT-OUT IS "WINGS OF EAGLES", WHAT MAKES THIS SUCH A GREAT MOVIE IS THE STORY.....LIFE OF A REAL NAVY HERO....GETS MY VOTE AS BEST ALL TIME JOHN WAYNE MOVIE.

default userpic

These are all great movies but I can not vote You forgot "In Harm's Way"!

default userpic

In Harm's Way is far and away my favorite John Wayne movie!

default userpic

one movie not shown often enough is Wings of Eagles. His portral of Spig Wead is really great.Truly inspiring.

default userpic

In Harms Way, one of his greatest and one of my favirite.

default userpic

In Harms Way was his best movie, Western or not!!

default userpic

I read almost all of the comments and did not see anyone mention Cahill, U.S. Marshall and The Comancheros.

My daughter gave me the best birthday present I have ever gotten. It was an entire set of John Wayne's "B" Westerns!

My husband and I raised our grand daughter and she turned 18 this year. She says she's the only 18 year old in America who can recognize John Wayne and Elvis Presley's voices without seeing them. She has seen all of the John Wayne movies and heard all of Elvis' songs... She says she's a better person for those experiences.

God Bless America!!!

default userpic

How can you vote on any John Wayne movie when they are all classics to me!

If all there ever was on tv all John Wayne movies I would watch them all over and over again as I have so many times.

It was a sad day when John Wayne passed.

He was a true American Icon!

default userpic

I love all his westerns. I wish you played one every day. I am collecting them. He was a real man.

default userpic

The best non-western? Hard to tell although I prefer "In Harm's Way" where he played his age (roughly).

The worst? When he played Genghis Khan in "The Conqueror". One of the last of his movies to be released on video and deservedly so. (Rumor was that he wouldn't allow it to be broadcast as long as he was alive.)

North to alaska is my favorite movie of all time:] i just love john wayne in general, i hope to become someone like him when i am older?

default userpic

My favorite non-western movie of John Wayne's would have to be 'Wings of Eagles '... the story of Spig Weed. The scenes between John, Maureen O'Hare, Dan Dailey and Ken Curtis are priceless. It had to be some good acting for John Wanye to play paralyze...learning to walk again... and then walking with those canes...

I HAVE BEEN A JOHN WAYNE FAN FAR YEARS AND LOVE ALMOST ALL OF HIS MOVIES AND HAVE OVER 90. oN WESTERNS DON'T FORGET HONDO AND ANGEL AND THE BAD MAN! NON WESTERNS, I AGREE WITH QUITE MAN, SANDS OF IWO JIMA AND MANY MORE BUT DON'T FORGET HIGH AND THE MIGHTY AND ISLAND IN THE SKY. TO ME HIS THE BEST !!!

BILL

default userpic

Undoubtedly my favorates are:

"In Harms Way"

"Wings of Eagles"

"Flying Tigers"

"Fighting Seabees"

default userpic

The Fighting Seabees was distinctive; John Wayne is depicted as tough but still cultured. He talks about ordering wine, he jitterbugs, and doesn't poach other guys girlfriends. It is a short movie but memorable for its action and human drama.

I have a lot of John Wayne movies and the movie I go back to time and again is The Horse Soldiers.

default userpic

I have a lot of John Wayne movies and the movie I go back to time and again is The Horse Soldiers.

default userpic

I never agreed with John Wayne's politics much, but he always seemed a truly decent man and was a true American film legend. His work lives on as some of the best in classic cinema. If I had to choose any one non-western film John Wayne made, I'd have to pick "Legend Of The Lost" (1957) it is rarely shown anymore and I guess that's why so few people seem to remember it. I also like "Donovans Reef" (1963) and "Mc Q" (1974) also a rarely seen film in which he was surprisingly effect as a tough cop. But I voted for "The Hellfighters" (1968) as my fav non-western from the choices that were listed.

default userpic

I voted for one of the many that you had on you poll but one of his best, in my opinion, is "The Cowboys" - what a great movie! And, as many of his fans have already stated, "In Harm's Way" is also a wonderful movie! He was just a great actor!

default userpic

IN MY OPION HOW COULD YOU PICK ONE OF THE BEST WHEN THEY ALL WERE GREAT BUT IF I HAVE TOO "IN HARMS WAY' would have to be it

default userpic

My favorite's are his films with Maureen O'Hara so fo course I voted for The Quiet Man. However the one that would run a close second is not on your list, The Wings of Eagles. His portrail of Spig Weed shows his depth and abilities.

default userpic

How about Rio Grande, with Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Ward Bond, Walter Brennan, et.al.? A terrific western.

default userpic

John Wayne has so many movies and all of them are great movies. My husband and I collected them all. But the one I like to laugh at is McLintock or for a war movie what about In Harm's Way. They all are great. Hard to pick just one.

default userpic

my fav is the cowboy's when he say's his back was broken twice and on his worse day he could kick his ass the duke rule's in this so i forgive you all that for got this movie lol.

default userpic

Well for western movie's the shotist and stagecoach would have to be the best. For non-western non-war the Quiet man an the High an Mighty. For war In Harm's Way.

default userpic

John Wayne is and always has been the quintessential American hero, the one man all the rest of us wanted to be like - for more than half a century. I agree with many that you couldn't narrow his best work down to one film, or even two. But for the sake of your poll, I'll say that The Shootist and Big Jake are his best westerns, and In Harm's Way his best non western. For at least 3 generations of boys to men, he'll always be one of a kind. Marion Morrison of Iowa became The Duke for all time . . .

default userpic

The Alamo,Big Jake,The Searchers and Hatari have to be some of his best if not the best. Its a shame he was not honored with more Academy Awards in his life. He is and will always be what America is all about. Courage, Honor and to stand up for whats right and honest.

default userpic

John Wayne was a true actor. He enjoyed what he did and it showed. Today the actors don't stay in the business long enough to know their names. My Grandson carries two of my favoite Wayne characters: Ethan Lane and then his last name. Hondo was a great movie and is shown so seldo. Why??

LJHebert

default userpic

The "searchers" was his best movie not his best western. You saw him in a believeable role where his intensity came out and was believable. Many of his movies were charicatures which he did only for the money.

default userpic

searchers

he showed his acting props and played off his best pal, Ward Bond

default userpic

Many of these films are great films. However, I would be inclined to add The Cowboys, El Dorado, The Sons of Katie Elder, and The Flying Tigers. The Cowboys had a great supporting cast that should be used as educational propaganda for young boys and how they should grow up and mature. Those are some of my favorites. Another good one is McLintock.

default userpic

The Fighting Seabees, The Flying Tigers, The Horse Soldiers, The Alamo

default userpic

You left out my favorite "In Harms Way"...

default userpic

My favorite John Wayne movie of all

time is The Alamo. It is all American ideals and The Duke rolled into one gigantic package.

default userpic

Like many of the comments, I cannot pick an absolute favorite.

The trait I like best about John Wayne was his loyalty to his fellow actors, eg., Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson had the talent, but John Wayne gave him the exposure in many great roles (Trooper Tyree in "Rio Grande").

More proof: Andy Devine, Vera Miles, Angie Dickinson, Harry Carey, Jr., and more, as well as Indians, Mexicans, cast in small parts, over and over. John Ford, and The Duke, took care of their friends.

default userpic

I think the searchers was his best role in that he did his best acting. In Harms Way,

El Dorado, Hellfighters, The Shootist, and the Sons of Katie Elder are my favorites. Did I forget She Wore a Yelloe Ribbon and McKlintock.

default userpic

I'm voting for Hellfighters because most of the oil well fires were filmed in the town where I grew up, Baytown Texas, and because I got to meet John Wayne while he was there filming.

default userpic

default userpic

personally, Horse soldiers..was my favorite,,,but so many others were great.

default userpic

I cannot believe that you did not include one of my all time favorite movies with John Wayne, and that is "IN HARM'S WAY". Everything about that movie was excellent. The "Quiet Man" would have to included in the all time favorites of Wayne. "MaClintock", although it was not what you would call Oscar material, it was one of my all time favorite comedic roll and character that the Duke played.

default userpic

There was a movie which John played a pilot that crashed up north in the snow but not island in the sky it was another one but I can't remember the name. Someone please help me with the name. Thanks

default userpic

you omitted one of his best movies "The Wings of Eagles" MGM 1957 directed by John Ford also starred Maureen O'Hara and Dan Dailey. John Wayne played Frank "spig" Wead ,This movie in my estamation is one of his finest for any John Wayne fans of his war movies this is a must see movie.

default userpic

In Harms Way is my favorite John Wayne film hands down

default userpic

LOL! I cant believe how many people didnt read that this was non westerns, geez
