John Wayne's Best Movies

He's always been the ultimate Hollywood Icon: tough, no nonsense, and focused on the task at hand. John Wayne rode into fame in John Ford's Stagecoach and has held a place in the hearts of moviegoers ever since.

Too hard to pick a favorite John Wayne movie. Especially since you left so many great ones out. One of my favorites in the western category is Chisum, but I like most all of them. Like Rio Grande and Fort Apache and McClintock. In the other category you left out In Harm's Way.
I also believe you left out great John Wayne movies. My actual all-time favorite is North to Alaska. I love how he could express humor and dignity. My 16 and 18 year old girls are third generation who know the movies of John Wayne. His charisma will long exceed the flickering stars of today.
The Searchers is not only John Wayne's best movie but I think it's the best western of all time.
There are so many movies that the Duke made, it is hard to pick which one, but I liked Mcclintock, Chisum. He was a great actor.
He always made you believe that his character was simply being "honest" with the action of the scene.
John Wayne represents everything in being an AMERICAN you could want. He stood for right from wrong, good guys always win, and showed us that being your own person was a winner! He set the examples for others to follow in everyday situations. His straight forward tough guy/yet charismatic style was never recognized early on as it perhaps should have been. Please don't stop playing his movies. He was truly an American Icon for all.
JOH WAYNE WASN'T ACTING, HE WAS LIVING & FORTUNATELY FOR US IT WAS TAPED & RECORDED, MY ALL TIME FAVORITE IS "CHISUM"
The Duke's accomplishments on film blow away such a short list. I agree that 'The Shootist' and 'The Quiet Man' rank very high on the list but where are 'In Harm's Way' and 'Hatari'? You could have actually run John Wayne movies the whole three day weekend without repeating yourselves.
John Wayne is the best !
I grew up on his films he reminds me of my father is damener his actions everything!
He is a icon and will always be in my heart and to America he is what real men should be.
And what real actors should be like not only in there work but in life in general every movie John wayne did is the greatest !!!!!!!!!!!

AMERICA & OUR YOUNG PEOPLE NEED JOHN WAYNE NOW MORE THAN EVER, IT IS TRULY AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY THAT HE IS NOT STILL WITH US!
Actually , my favorite isn't listed - El Dorado but out of those listed above I'll go with the Quiet Man. Another good movie not listed is McClintock. It's my second favorite with the Quiet Man and Rio Bravo coming in next.
I have loved John Wayne so much, I named my first son, John Wayne and he was born on John Wayne's birthday, which was May 26, 1963.

I have always thought, that John Wayne should have won the Academy Award for the "Searchers"..What a great guy and movie,,
favorite for John Wayne is Angel and the Badman.
It is really hard to pick a favorite, but I would have to say "In Harm's Way". I watch it every time it's on.
THE QUIET MAN #1
McCLINTOCK #2
THE FIGHTING SEABEE'S #3
My favorite Duke movie is McClintock. In Harms Way comes in a close 2nd. Why he will always be an American icon is answered by my kids. Both my sons [11 and 14 years old] always come running to tell me a Duke movie is coming on and family time with popcorn happens soon after.
It's difficult to pick just one. I went with Seachers as one of my favorites, but you can't leave out Donavan's Reef, as a good one also. John Wayne stood for everything good about this country and what it stands for, Freedom, Liberty, and the pursuit of happingness. John Wayne's image will endure through out time, because the Amercan people need him and what he stood for.
Such A short list! I made a choice out of your list and even at that it was hard to make a choice. I have so many favorites...I would have liked to have seen The Sons of Katie Elder in the list, El Dorado, The Alamo, The Comancheros, and Chisum in the list...In Harms Way too. I could go on forever. I think The Duke was one of the finest actors the world has ever known and the "Academy" did a great injustice by overlooking The Searchers, North to Alaska, and many more.
I think John Wayne was the ultimate actor, and the all time Cowboy. There will never be another like John Wayne. His movies are all great. Thank you for doing a John Wayne movie day.
To quote from a line in the Tall Men (or as close as I can remember) He is what ever boy wants to be when he grows up and every old man wishes he had been.
"Rio Bravo" because it takes me home. I was about six when I saw it at the theater with my grandmother. My uncle also loved it. Both of them are gone now, but when I see "Rio Bravo", I think of them, and I am home. John Wayne had the ability to take any of us home, wherever and whatever home may be to any of us.
There aren't many stars in this world and none can compare to the great John Wayne!
His honesty, integrity, and true character shows through in every movie and interview he has done. He is a true legend and has earned the respect of a true hollywood star. There will NEVER be another one like him! He is truely an icon!
My dad was a devoted John Wayne fan ... BIG TIME!!!
I have to agree with the old man, the DUKE is number 1, in Westerns and Military movies.
Our favorites are: The Shootist, TRUE GRIT, and THE SEARCHERS!!!
God bless John Wayne
John Wayne is a real american hero. In our day and time there is so few people in this industry that can be look upon as a contributer to good & decent moral values.John said and I quote "Courage is being scared to death-but saddling up anyway."
I started watching The Duke in 1951 on Sunday mornings with my dad. I have been watching him on tv and in the movies ever since. My all time favorite is "The Searchers", and I have never missed a screening whenever it is on tv. I think it is his most powerful performance and I don't know of any girl who wouldn't want to be swept up in his arms and have him take you home. He is my hero and I only wish the youth of today could know him the way all of his die hard fans do. If I had to introduce The Duke to the youth of today these are the movies I would show them --The Searchers, Red River, The Quiet Man, Sands of Iwo Jima, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shootist and Chisum. I am only sorry I never got to meet him in person.
What can you say about John Wayne..... You left some real good ones off the list. Particularly one of my favorites In Harms Way. I only wish we had an actor with John Wayne's character today....
How can you really pick a favorite movie by John Wayne. There are only two kinds of people in this world. The kind who like him and the ones who hate him. I for one love his movies. And if you like him then you like all his movies. And you find yourself tryin to decide which one of his movies is better the the rest. The man had great screen presence and was the man that all men wanted to be. I think that The Sons of Kate Elder is a movie that should also be mentioned in his huge selection of movies that he did. It's a real shame that we don't have more actors as great as he was now days. Movies would be better then ever before if we did.
My grandmother loved John Wayne and we would watch him when I was a little girl. I collect anything that has to do with The Duke. My 2 daughters love him also. He is timeless and was a true American. We went to Iowa for his 100 year celebration and got to see his birthplace, meet his children and other family members, and also got to meet movie stars who worked with him. It was the greatest trip I have ever taken. My most favorite movies are Chisum and McClintock. Thank you AMC for continuing to show The Dukes movies. I can never get enough.
It is summed up in the medal given him by the Congress of the United States:
John Wayne, American.
What is wrong with America?
We lost our B Western Values. Watch a good old B Western from the 30’s-40’s. Common sense, common decency, knowing the difference between right and wrong, striving to do the right thing, protect the venerable, others over self. Being good and honest was more important than being cool.
John Wayne was human and was certainly not perfect, but his profession was acting and he portrayed what we could all strive for. It is hard to pick a bad JW Movie. I'd watch even the old Lone Star productions over a free ticket to any new movie anyday.
The list of his great films, which can be inspiring, enlightening and entertaining is too vast to list.
He portrayed America as we would like it to be. It is up to try to regain the America we desire.
John Wayne has always been my hero. He was the epitome of the American man. When I was around ten years old, I went to the premiere of RED RIVER in Houston where I lived. Since that time I have been in love with cowboys and the West. I hold an MA in Frontier West; I own many of his movies. The bulk of his work sustains the strength, will, and intelligence of those who built America. There are no films of his I don't like, but RED RIVER will forever be my favorite. What a human being!
I agree - they left out some of the best. Chisum,Eldorado,McClintoch and many more. John Wayne, and many of the actors/actresses of past, were so great because they did act. Back then there was less dialogue so the they had to act. John Wayne said a lot by his acting and, when he spoke the words, he said what needed to be said. Also, there was a clear line between good and bad. Values were taught too as women were treated with respect, even the bad ones, and there was no profanity.
I would love it when they are going to have a specific actor/actress day or weekend, they played as many movies as possible instead of repeating just a few.
I don't feel that all of the Duke's westerns are truly represented. To me, if you were to list them all and place an "
all of the above" selection at the bottom,
that would be the choice most true fans would make.

John Wayne never made a bad movie. My personal favorite is In Harm's Way. He should have & would have won the Oscar for Stagecoach if not for Gone With the Wind. He is more than a Hollywood icon; he is the true image of what every American should be, a man of integrity & a true patriot. This country desperately needs him today. God bless John Wayne and thank you for keeping his work & his memory alive.

In Harm's Way, without question.
Every John Wayne Movie is great please continue to show his Movies there will never be another Duke , thanks amc please do more of this in the future. ( a huge John Wayne fan)
I collect John Wayne films I only have about 100 of them so many I don't have yet. My favorite of all is the one with Dean Martin & Ricky Nelson in Rio Bravo! Their music is classic. John Wayne never made a bad film as far as I'm concerned even the one where he played gingus kan don't know if I spelled that right.
You forgot In Harm's Way and Angel and the Badmen, those were great awesome movies, i have always been a John Wayne fan and cannot wait to show my children all his movies. I am glad that he represents what an Amercian truly is, a brave man who stands up for whats right.
John Wayne is in my opinion the greatest actor of all time. I'm 29 now, but have been watching him since i was 5. I'm a big fan of his military movies and that is why i joined the army. I wanted to be just like him. He has been a hero to me all of my life.
John Wayne made so many great movies. But I think his diversity and acting range is really seen in his comic movie with Lee Marvin in "Donovan's Reef".
The Searchers has been my favorite for many years. I can turn it on at any point in the movie and sit down and enjoy it (and recite all the lines). The dialogue is classic, along with the great shots from Monument Valley. The changes in the Duke's demeanor throughout the movie are great, from hard to comical. Liberty Valance is also classic with its moments of comical light-heartedness intermixed with the overall sadness.
Can’t believe that Rio – Bravo was not listed. This just the right mix of humor and action.
John Wayne's Movies are among the best to be seen these days. You don't have to worry about the foul language nor the sex.
You can always depend on seeing a good movie. All of them weren't award material, but they were advennturous and funny sometimes, and interesting like the High and the Mighty, all of his wartime movies and most all of his westerns. I have more than 120 of his movies, both on DVDs and VHS.
My first movie theater experience with a John Wayne movie was Mclintock. The best part was hearing my Dad laugh through almost every scene. But it was not my first experience with this actor. I have been watching John Wayne movies for as long as I can remember. He made you understand that there was a job to do and someone had to do it, generally without any thanks. He made the 2 ultimate war movies, The Longest Day and In Harm's Way, both promoting patriotism. Thank You!
Out of the movies you listed, the Quiet Man was my favorite. But you left out so many other favorites. The Cowboys,Hell Fighters,The Sons of Katie Elder and The Longest Day. All of these are among my favorites. He will be remembered for the true Icon he was.....
He'll always be the greatest to me. I think "Big Jake" was my favorite. But his best job of acting was probably "The Searchers" even though I really don't like the movie that much. Long live the Duke.
I have ot agree with Scott M in the last post \.Rio Bravo had the most unlikely cast in the movie but it worked very well. The ones he made with Dean Martin were good... Sons of Kate Elder....
McClintock is probably the funniest movie. Maureen O' Hara I think made that movie. Good cast in that one.. The ones I don't like are the ones made in the 70's. Nothing against John Wayne.... Instead of being in the era they are supposed be.... the hairstyles and makeup look 70's. Long hair, barretts, and heavy eyeliner.. When I feel dowm I'll watch John or Bob Hope to lift me up
I have been a John Wayne fan my entire life...I am 60 years old and still get excited when I see one of his movies on television. I have pictures of him lining my hall way, I drink from a John Wayne coffee cup with the quote "courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway". I have John Wayne magnets on my fridge...oh, well, I am not his only fan. He reminds me alot of my father and my godfather. All of his movies were great...my favorites are The Green Berets, Sands of Iwo Jima, The Searchers and Big Jake. But you can all count on one thing...if he is on...I am watching.
He is what almost all Americans admire the most,(even if they won't say it out loud.) brave, direct and honest. In real life he was a great American, who believed in what America stood for. So powerful an influence, that Stalin gave orders for his assaination in the 50's. This country has become so P.C., that just hearing the name 'John Wayne', to me is refreashing. Off the soapbox for now.
I am 3rd generation to watch John Wayne. As a youth, given the chance to pick a movie, I would always grab up a John Wayne movie rather than a new release. He has always been one of my heroes for the simple reason that he lived and died as a hero. I love all of his movies and I thoroughly enjoy the "Shootist" knowing that he was saying farewell to everyone. His way of being was someone you could always count on. When he stood up, everyone paid attention, his presence was naturally felt. His stands for right and wrong are seriously needed in this day and age. He was the perfect Westerner in heart and soul and he performed in like manner. My dream had always been to meet him, he is my "American Idol." He played roles that left me crying or whooping with excitement.
I wish that more of his movies would be played also. Three day weekends should be dedicated to all of his movies not just the same yearly repeats.
John Wayne is the best. I think you should play one John Wayne movie, every sunday. My favorites are Donavans Reef and McClintock. Hes the man.
John Wayne came from a different America. One that wasn't ashamed of being strong and prosperous. He was a perfect fit for the time. Said what he believed whether it was popular or not and was prepared to defend what he said. There was a sense of pride in him that reflected the positive things about our country. Unfortunately, that has been lost along with him.
I have loved John Wayne since I was 5 yrs. old. My favorite movie is "The Quiet Man", followed by "McLintock", and "The Shootist". It's hard to pick because John Wayne never made a bad movie. I love them all. I would love to have met him. He lives in my heart always. Thank you Mr. Wayne for all the great movies. God Bless John Wayne.
John Wayne, to me, is the without a doubt "The American Icon". Strong, silent, frank, and rugged; he personified the ways of the "wild west" but more than that, he set the standard for every young american boy striving to become a man. He became an institution ,to all americans, both on the big screen and in real life. The challenge to many of us as fans is simply pinpointing where his characters roll ended and where John Wanye began.
Wayne was the best, they should show more of his movies more often.
The Quiet Man will always be the best and favorite movie ever i think. I had the privelge of seeing where The Quiet Man was filmed. It was just beautiful in Ireland and to see the area to see how it was will always be so special. John
Wayne will always be the best of usa.
I will always watch John Wayne all day when ever they show him. I'm a iowan and i feel so honored that i can say John Wayne is fellow iowan. My youngest son was name after his movie Big Jake. I could go on and on about him .I'm thankful that we will always be able to watch his movies. I wish the good and honorable feelings and ideas that his movies instill will be there for generations to come
Red River had to be the best film ever made. He was one of the greatest actors, and I wish he was still with us.
As far as I'm concerned all of John Wayne's movies are great. I have quite a collection of his films on either DVD or tape. Some are old ones but mostly all of his ones up until he passed away. I also have his very last film The Shootist, which I treasure highly.
But the one I like the most of all is Big
Jake. He to me was excellent in the role he played as a tough old cowboy who took nothing from no one. May his films last for-
ever and his legend the same.

What about Angle and the Badman?!
John Wayne is the greatest. There is no one alive or dead that was/is more American than him. He stood for everything in the American way. Whether it be movies about Army, Cowboys, Ranchers, Detectives or Firefighters. He was it. You have someone name you a popular cowboy and John Waynes name will come up. He was outstanding and dashing. I'm sorry but you did not list his favorite movie. That was all of them. He should have got an Oscar for dang near everyone of them and then some. You need to show all of his movies at least once or twice a year. Everyone of them, from when he started to when he finished. He's my hero and I'm 61 years old.
My father never missed a John Wayne movie and neither did I. The most common comment in your file is that there are just too many good ones to choose from and so many left out. I liked the Quiet Man because it was out of the usual from his career. Our generation were lucky to grow up with two great American Heros on the Silver Screen, John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. Both men in their movies usually represented... what we as Americans would like to think is the best of being an American. Today that is even more important as both tv and movies have thrown out the moral code of ethics that used to be the standard of entertainment. While he was married several times, John Wayne always kept his family and friends close to him...which can be seen in the co-actors in his movies. I applaud AMC for not only showing classics but the quality of movies that make us remember a time when people still had values, morals and eithics and a movie stood on its own merits and not its special effects.
How can you pick one favorite? Chisum, Big Jake, the Quiet Man,Sands of Iwo Jima, the list is endless. That would be like chosing which of your children you love more.
I'm a John Wayne fan and i'm just missing a 130 of his movies that I'm collecting.
First of all I don't think the Duke ever made a bad movie! Second like everyone else out there, there are just too many to choose from, but I myself think we should do this the way he started and finished his great career. stagecoach & the shootist, both are #1 in my book and will always be. In closeing I will quote John Ford's credo which was spoken @ the end of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." We have our LEGEND!!!!
Reading the comments is like listening to the conversation my wife and I are having right now. How could one choose a "best"? Donovans Reef is, lest we forget, a Christmas movie (at least in part). Angel and the Badman co-starring Gail Russell, an actress with a typically tragic Hollywood story Except for the Conqueror (sorry if you liked it, I think its a howler) they were all BEST. Thanks, Mr. Wayne, for showing us the best of America and the best aspects of being an American.
HE WAS A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS.
A REAL MAN'S MAN.
THERE IS NOT A MOVIE OF HIS THAT I DO NOT
LOVE. I GUESS HIS BIGGER THAN LIFE
APPEARANCE SAID IT ALL. THERE IS NOT
ANOTHER STAR THAT CAN HOLD THE CANDLE TO HIM. WITHOUT EXCEPTION. WE NEED HIM NOW
MORE THAN EVER IN OUR LIFETIME. "OUR HERO"
John Wayne to me was a true idle in every since of the word and to pick just one favorite is not fair to the man himself, for he made so many great movies that would make people want to walk along side of him and his movies gave you that avenue of escape from reality if even for an hour or two. He was truely one of the greatset actors of his time and since.
On the screen and in life the Duke was pretty much a straight shooter. Yes of course with firearms, but I mean in the sense of what makes up a person in the way he lived his life. He was no angel and I don't think he ever claimed to be one. However, I don't recall anything ever said or reported about him that he had to be ashamed of. I believe he was an honest and thoughtful person who just naturally gained respect as well as giving it in return. I never met him but I wih I had. A great American who is still respected by me as well as others on this planet. I wish there were more like him.....
John Wayne was the ultimate american hero. It is impossible to vote for the one best one. I loved everything from "The Angel and the Badman" through to "McQ', and "Brannigan".
He is sorely missed!
As so many others have indicated, Wayne's best movies are McClintock first and In Harms Way second. Whomever picked the selections on the ballot isn't a true John Wayne fan.
After reading all the comments about John Wayne while watching the Quiet Man, I have found that I am teared eyed and remembering my father who was alot like the Duke.
As a pervious post said
John Wayne American
Some of my favorites aren't listed and haven't been mentioned much: Big Jake, The Cowboys, Fort Apache, and The Green Berets. I would echo a lot of the other comments. John Wayne is THE American icon. His values are the right and proper values of America. You don't need to be ashamed to be strong and prosperous--it's what you do with that strength and prosperity that counts. "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue." I wish he were still here.
John Wayne is/was the best. I have most of his movies and watch them rather than most put out yesterday or today. My children and the neighborhood children were brought up, by me, on John Wayne and one has named his son, "Jake" after "Big Jake". Four generations of family and friends have friendly arguments over who is the biggest John Wayne fan. None of us could choose which Wayne film was the best because they all are. Today's actors (except Mel Gibson)and films (except "The Passion" and "Apocalypto") are a sorry lot compared to "John Wayne - American". Thanks AMC for the JW weekend.
John Wayne is the best and I loved all of his movies. Under the westerns you forgot to list HONDO which was excellent. Please never stop playing his movies.
JOHN WAYNE-AMERICAN,HERO,LEGEND & ICON FOREVER & ALWAYS
You didn't list "North to Alaska" which is one of his best pictures.
John Waynes best picture of all time was In Harm's Way. Almost all of his movies were good. We also enjoy Rooster Cogburn. All of the military roles that he played made you glad to be an American and most likely motivated many people to join the military .
You didn't list my four favorites...#1 El Dorado #2 McClintock #3 Chisum #4 In Harms Way
The Duke is an American Icon. He symbolized what was good in America. He truly is "The True American" He was the best, noone came close. God love him.
John wyne has been my favorite actor for years I am 62 years old and i could watch any of his movies, like it was the first time i saw it. But I like to belive that one of his best pictures was the foot solider,he hardly wears his gun thru out the movie.
My father and I watched his movies all the time. In Harm's Way is one of my favorites. But I have to say..when I was 12 my parents took me to see "The Green Berets". My mother had many regrets about that. I retired a Command Sergeant Major from the Army, following a few years with the 5th Special Forces. I have to say, that movie is my inspiration. I watch it today and think of all the movies he said.."Move Out". Oh yes..I was also in the 325th Airborne Infantry..for all you "Longest Day" fans...that would be.."Let's Go"!!!!
I grew up on John Wayne movies because my Dad was a big fan and now I watch them with my husband all the time. I love a lot of his movies and most of my favorite are not on the list but my favorite John Wayne movie of all times is In Harms Way. Not many know about this movie but it really is one of the best love story/action movies I have ever seen.
One of my favorites is The Sons Of Katie Elder. That one is really funny.
Another one of my favorites is In Old California. I have most of The Dukes movies, but these two movies I can (and have) watch them over and over and over.
My favorite John Wayne movie isn't on the list, its Hellfighters.
All of John Wayne movies are my favorite, but the one I love the most is the "Quiet Man". John Wayne and the great cast of characters and actors I feel set that movie apart from the rest. Dont get me wrong, I love all his movies and I have made a point of having my children watch them too. He was what an AMERICAN should be, he believed in the greatnest of this country and the people and history. I feel if the DUKE was alive today he would be riding "Tall in the Saddle" over all the actors who down our great country. Now I think he just sheads a tear for what has happened to the Hollywood Community. To the greatest actor and american icon of all time I say;
"Thanks Duke"
I movie that I vote for is " McLintock " that is the one I think is the very best, though I love all his westerns . I was born on the same day that he was May 26 and when he is on any channel I watch the movie . I miss his movies he is and was the best
THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANYONE I EVER ENJOYED MORE THAN JOHN WAYNE.
THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANYONE I ENJOYED MORE THAN JOHN WAYNE,I LOVE ALL HIS MOVIES,I COULD NOT CHOOSE JUST ONE FAVORITE.I WISH THEY WOULD SHOW MORE OF HIS MOVIES.
Every who watched a John Wayne movie wanted to be one of the boys who rode on the trail drive in "The Cowboys". Like many others though, there are so many favorite John Wayne movies that to single one out leaves all the other great movies.
"ANGEL AND THE BADMAN"
Not only John Wayne's best western, but perhaps the best classic western of all time!!!
Behind the Quiet Man my number two movie would be Blood Alley and then She wore a Yellow Ribbon, Hatari, Hellfighters.
This one man was in 171 movies and I am proud to say I have seen over a 100 more than several times.
I would have liked to meet the "Duke", there will never be another American Movie Icon like John Wayne.
I am over 50 an still watch John Wayne movies whenever they are on TV or from my extensive video collection.
LIKE MOST EVERYONE ELSE WHO HAS SEEN A JOHN WAYNE MOVIE IT IS HARD TO CHOOSE ONE.
I CHOOSE THE QUIET MAN ONLY BECAUSE YOU DID NOT HAVE McCLINTOCK LISTED. IN THIS
MOVIE NOT ONLY DO YOU GET ONE OF HIS BEST
WESTERN MOVIES, BUT YOU GET SOME OF HIS BEST ACTING AS WELL, {BEST OF BOTH WORLDS}
THANK-YOU FOR KEEPING THE GREAT MOVIES ALIVE.
John Wayne-the TRUE American hero.Having seen all his movies, it's hard to pick a best. But, I've noticed people have forgot about " Rooster Cogburn" and " True Grit'. How much better could it be?
In the early days of his career the American people needed entertainment. Times were hard, and scraping up a quarter or a dollar, what ever the price at the time wasn't easy. They ALWAYS got their money's worth at a John Wayne movie. My parents were children of the depression, and sadly life was never easy for them. Daddy has been gone since '91 and mama since '99. Every John Wayne movie reminds me of them and the hours of pleasure they got from his movies.
I'm a big fan, but even if I weren't I would be thankful for what he gave them and millions of others like them.
My favorites include McClintock, Rio Grande, The Quiet Man, (I also Love Maureen O'Hara!)Rio Bravo,Hellfighters,The Cowboys,Big Jake,Donovan's Reef. The list goes on and on.
A Real American Hero.
I don't have any particular favorite but I do favor the cowboy and war movies.El Dorado is also a great picture that was not mentioned. All his movies show his great acting ability and he was always standing up for the little guy. He is just a great American icon. He was a very respected man and very honorable. I am glad that I grew up on John Wayne.
You don't have one of his very best and my
favorite Western listed. "Fort Apache" is my all time favorite John Wayne Western. It is also one of his best The theme when they go riding is something special. It also shows how the Native Americans, Indians were wrong judged and treated. But "Fort Apache" will always be my favorite, although I truly love all his Westerns, even all the old "B" Westerns. They were what the Seniors of today grew up on.
John Wayne has always been my favorite American and actor. I was fortunate enough to meet him in the mid 60's while still a school girl in Southern California. I will always cherish that memory. McLincock is my favorite John Wayne movie but I love them all. It's too bad we don't have a John Wayne for this and future generations to enjoy.
I like just about any John Wayne movie, but here are my favorites:
The Searchers
True Grit
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
The Quiet Man
In Harm's Way
Rio Grande
Red River
The Shootist
Blood Alley
Dark Command
When John Wayne did his last movie, The Shootist, he left a classic description of most of the characters he ever played on the screen and probably of the way he approached life.
"I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them."
J. B. Books
I picked one of the movies you listed but wanted to add my vote for "In Harms Way" and in the comedy catagory I'm between North to Alaska and McClintock.
Regards.
Jhon Wayne was a wonderful actor,I loved
his movies. I own several and have wached
everyone through out mylife. My favorites are Mcclintok ,Big Jake.Rio Brovo. and manny more I don't have room to list.He and my father were the same
age and both died of Cancer within a month
of each other. He was a great American.

It is really hard to pick a favorite but The Searchers and Hondo are two of my all time favorites. He was the strength and courage of America. I have heard all my life that he did more to defeat the enemies of WWII than any one else. Those two characters he played show that. I have a two year old grandson and he has the best of both, his name is Ethan Lane Fasano. I hope he will get the strength this world takes by having that name.
You needed to give us far more options of John Wayne's movie. My favorites are Donovan's Reef, McClintock, and Hatari, are just a few more you should have given as options.
I love his movies, and I still miss him.
Pick a favorite John Wayne movie? Let's see. El Dorado, Chisum, Sons Of Katie Elder, Green Beret, Red River, Flying Tigers, McClintock, McQ, Sands Of Iwo Jima, Hellfighters, Hatari, The Quiet Man, and many many more. I think I know which movie I like best. WHICHEVER MOVIE THAT IS SHOWING NEXT.
John Wayne American
Comments made so far sum up how we all felt and still feel about John Wayne. As I write this I am sitting watching Hellfighters. John Wayne was one of Hollywoods most veristal actors ever. He stood and still stands for everything good in America. As far as my favorites, everyone of of John Waynes films are mine. I grew up with John Wayne movies and being over 50 I can say I have seen just about everyone of them more than once and they never get old. "Courge is being scared to death but saddling up anyway." Thanks for the memories Duke.
John Wayne has so many great movies it is difficult to choose just one and as I have seen everyone of them I can say without a doubt John Wayne was the greatest actor of his time bar none
The very first movie I went to see with my dad was North to Alaska. If there was ever a John Wayne movie on we watched it together. He was believable. His characters had faults and short comings like we all do but his characters always rose above.
I think he gave us all someone to look up to. I love watching his movies over and over again. I don't get tired of them. Thanks AMC>
ANY and ALL
Another on the "All John Wayne's Movies Are Best List", "The Alamo". "Fuerte, feo y formal" (but he was not ugly).
Red River, Cowboys, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, Big Jake, Cahill US Marshall, Sons of Katie Elder......pretty much any movie but what you're playing today

I could watch Rio Bravo every night. I love this movie; infact I like every movie Wayne has made. We have 8 of the movies listed. When ever we can not find something to watch John Wayne is our answer. There are just no super stars like him in the industry any more!
Even though John Wayne played a cowboy in most of his movies, he was still one of the most versatile actors. His movies were great and his characters were better.
Actually, my favorite John Wayne movie is "The Green Berets" but it wasn't on the list so I went with my second favorite, "True Grit".
John Wayne is the best. I have watched his movies all my life, and I have never seen a bad one yet. Thanks AMC TV for showing our Big John's movies.
Hondo is my favorite John Wayne movie.
Red River, The Searchers, Cowboys, Big Jake, Sons of Katie Elder, Cahill US Marshall, The Quiet Man, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, Rio Bravo, so......pretty much any movie you're NOT playing today....maybe next time huh?
my all time favorite john wayne movie is "The Horsesoldiers"
The one thing about this survey AMC will come back and say the all time favorite or best is ..."what the majority vote on above"
I agree it should be in catagories, Being a VET "In Harms Way" all around favorite.
Westerns "Cowboys & McClintok"
John wayne looked my father in law who passed from this life. He used to joke about being a double for John Wayne and that some day the agents would find him. I think I have too many favorites to really pick only one. He was just wonderful and played every part with with such dedication. He was truly a great actor.
You didn't actually have his best movies on the list. My favorites are "The Cowboys" and "In Harm's Way".
I agree that the duke was a man's man but he was also a gentleman. I think that all the men who look at him in awe should take that to heart. He liked his drink and he loved to be with friends but he was a man that was gentle around people. He was a what you saw on the inside as well as the outside.
My husband is a dyed-in-the-wool John Wayne fan. I've lost count of the times we've watched "Rio Bravo" and "Eldorado", his favorites. John Wayne's movies are the only ones we watch over and over. He was a great star.
my best picture is big jake
He stands/stood for the best of America, he was everything that we admire. He was America, whether you like it or not. He caused a feeding of pride fill you when watch his movies and hear him speak.
We, my wife and I, grew up on his movies, John Wayne was the kind of person we wanted to be like. We watch his movioes over and over. We have the recording he made about, "America, Why I love Her", we love it.
Remeber John Wayne, May we never forget him. God Bless America and we know that God Blessed John Wayne.
What about "El Dorado", "North to Alaska" and "Chisum"....all great movies. Next to "The Quiet Man", "El Dorado" is my favorite, but, as previously stated, John Wayne's movies are ALL good!
I THINK JOHN WAYNE WAS THE BEST ACTOR OF ALL TIME ,AND FOR A FEW VERY GOOD REASONS.HIS FIRM AND DEEPLY ROOTED REPUBLICAN VALUES AND HIS LOVE OF BEAUTIFUL AMERICA AND ALL THAT IT STANDS FOR ,1. HIS COMMANDING PRESENCE ON SCREEN AND HIS NO NONSENSE ATTITUDE ,2. HIS ABILITY TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST POLITICAL WRONGS WITHOUT FEAR ,EVEN THOUGH IT COST HIM SOME ACADEMY AWARDS AND PRAISE FROM THE PUBLIC,3.AND MOST IMPORTANTLY HIS FINAL AND GREATEST TRIUMPH.BEFORE HE DIED OF CANCER IN 1979 HE REPENTED OF HIS SINS AND COMMITED HIS LIFE TO JESUS CHRIST.I KNOW HE IS IN HEAVEN,AND I LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING HIM THERE SOMEDAY.LONG LIVE THE DUKE!
Thankyou for showing John Wayne movies at least there is something on tv worth watching this way, he made so many, so do not ever stop showing them please! After I read all the posting I saw no one named the horse soilders it was one of his best I guess you would say but than all of his were so good because he loved what he did and he loved america with a passion. and he loved people which is not so true today, once again thankyou for showing these wonderfully movies for us all six of my young grand sons just love him and he will teach them right in his movies can not say that about too many other movies today Brad
You left out my favorite John Wayne movie of all time - Chisum! It shows his great love and concern for the American Indian and the United States of America itself. He was an awsome American!!!
In my opinion his greatest movie was "The Cowboys". When it was released it was the only movie at that time that I saw him killed. You couldn't kill the DUKE and yet it happened. I stand by all of them though.
It's extremely tough to pick ONE picture,
but if I had to pick one I suppose "Green
Berets" is the symbol of excellance and
stature that is exhibited in all of his
movies. That era of movies from 1950 through 1980 is like "solid gold" to the baby boomer generation! As the iconic actors from this time pass away into the
setting sun, so goes the ideas and memories of the older generation. The name
of John Wayne will always with stand this
test of time!
John Wayne was the number one actor of all times. I've watched him since the late 1940's. He is Mr. America. I think all of his films are great, but the one's I like the best are,EL DORADO, RIO BRAVO,RIO LOBO, and THE FIGHTING SEABEES
MY FAVORITE IS ELDORADO, BUT SINCE THAT IS NOT ON THE LIST, I GO WITH THE QUIET MAN!
One of the saddest days after I got married was having to take down all my John Wayne pictures out of the living room. Although I haven't been able to convince my wife to put the Duke back where he should be, I have got her hooked on John Wayne's movies. Her favorite is the cowboys. She goes on and on of how great that movie is. We are only in our thirties so I still have a lot of time to put the Duke back where he belongs in every American household.
John Wayne is my hero. I havnt seen a movie of his that I didnt like.He had so many good movies that its hard to pick one. But I have played In harms way a dozen times. The oldewr he got the better he got.He was supurb as a man in authority. He had such a commanding presence. There are no more like him.Hail the hero.
John Wayne was a great actor and a great man. Love his movies, especially El Dorado. Thanks for playing them today
John Wayne that is all anyone needs to say he was one of the greatest American Hero's there was and thanks to Maureen O Hara the govt said so too. They don't make men like that anymore "America may not be right but it is never wrong" That was The Duke. Favorites are too numerious to mention just know that we as Americans have a Hero that didn't claim to be one. May you have sunshine and happy trails there in heaven. Thank God for John Wayne and Jimmy Sterwart.
John Wayne was what is means to be a real man. He was one of the best actors of all time. He stood for honor, valor, patriotism, and all the things that our young people are not taught today.
Please continue to play all his movies, they are all great.
I voted for The Searchers but I could have just as easily voted for all of the other films listed as well as far too many that were not on the list. He was a man's man and it is very unfortunate that he is not around today to continue with the making of true American films rather than what we are seeing today with basically violence, sex, and special effects. I also see that he is not being shown as much as time goes by on different channels as well as AMC. It is just a shame that his exposure is not much more than it is, particularily for the youngsters who would have the opportunity to see something good rather than the stuff that is being highlighted.
Thank you and God Bless
I am 63 years old and John Wayne has been my favorite all my life. He has never made a movie I didn't like. John Wayne is what I call a true American.
How can anyone pick just one John Wayne movie. My favorites aren't even shown on the list. Personally, I like Wings of Eagles and Big Jake.
One of the movies I like not even mentioned was Hatari, about African hunters who captured wild critters for zoo's. It's not a western and not a crime drama but it did put him in a different setting and an interesting change for the Duke.
One of the best John Wayne movie's is a little shown western called "HONDO". But I can't argue with "the Searches" either. He was a legend and I hope you show more of his great movies.
Why is John Wayne the Ultimate Hollywood Icon? I don't know if Mr. Webster's book has enough words to explain. First, John Wayne was more than a Hollywood Icon. The man himself once said that with each role, he was just John Wayne. He had integrity. He wouldn't back down from his beliefs or his politics, no matter who challenged him. He didn't back down. He belived in this country, America, faults and all. Unlike some, he didn't shout about and parade the faults, he upheld the great things. He never tried to tear down this country. The reason he is so beliveable in the hero roles, is because he belived and practiced the very things that heros are made of--honesty, integrity, and truthfulness. A Hollywood Icon? He was and is an American Icon.
I personally think BIG JAKE was John Wayne's best movie. It showed that family is the most important thing of all, family and loyalty.
He stands/stood for the best of America, he was everything that we admire. He was a true America, He caused a feeling of pride when you watch his movies and heard him speak. He really had true grit.
We,my wife and I, grew up on his movies, John Wayne was the kind of person we wanted to be like. We watch his movies over and over.As far as my favorite movie,I can't think of one move the Duke made that was not my favorite.we love them all.I go back as far as the old Republic Pictures,RKO,the Sat.serial at the movies. The mask riders for good over evil.Where he had a white horse and hat.I have most of the dukes movie's now.The Plate's that hang on my wall, with the duke in a scene of that movie, some of the repoduction movie posters, life size cut out of the duke in my computer room,an empty whiskey decanter of the Duke.Yes you can say I am proud to be a John Wayne fan. There was only one John Duke Wayne. He will live for ever in our menory.
THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER DUKE, IT WAS A GREAT HUMAN BEING AND A ONCE IN A LIFTIME ACTOR NO ACTOR IN THIS CENTURY
COULD HOLD A CANDLE TO THE JOHN WAYNE. THERE NEVER WAS A BAD JOHN WAYNE MOVIE, I
ENVY THE WAYNE FAMILY FOR BEING THE OFFSPRING OFA LEGEND. I HOPE HE IS LOOKING DOWN FROM HEAVEN WITH JOHN FORD, VICTOR MCLAGLEN AND BEN JOHNSON REVELING IN THE JOY THAT THEY HAVE BROUGHT MILLONS OF PEOPLE THEN AND FOREVER, JOHN WAYNE IS A TRUE AMERICAN HERO GOD BLESS JOHN NOW AND FOREVER
I can't really pick 'one movie' as my favorite. Hard to make a short list when over a hundred movies are involved. For Westerns I have to add to "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "Rio Grande" (which I'm watching this minute) which you list, "Rio Lobo" with Jack Elam (1970), "El Dorado" with Robert Mitchum and some new kid named James Caan (1967), and "Rio Bravo" with Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Walter Brennan (1958) and about 80 others. John's got so many good ones you could do a week, 7/24 of his movies with no repeats and still have left-overs.
there are so many great movies that John Wayne made. you lift off a lot of his best movies. i still enjoy watching them no matter which one is on. he will always be a great american movie idol.
Do I have a FAVORITE John Wayne movie? Only all of them! He is America at its best -- most of the time really good, some times truly great and ALWAYS worth the effort. He is by great-grandfather during the Civil War, my uncle in World War II, my dad in the Battle of the Bulge and my nephews in Vietnam. He makes me feel really glad that I am a patriotic, flag-waving sentimentalist and he offered no apologies for it.
He took a much more human approach to the topic of Native Americans long before it was popular and politically correct.
I guess my very favorite western was Rio Grande but my favorite image of John Wayne will always be walking off into the night whistling a tune from The High and the Mighty.
That's the way I like to remember him.
John Wayne was a TRUE AMERICAN. He loved his family, he loved his country. He had his children in many of his movies, and many of his longtime friends, you also new how John Wayne felt about America. One of the Greatest Actors to have ever lived.. I have personally collected over 50 of John Waynes movies. All of them were and are great to see. McLintock was a great western where not one person was killed, but was fun to watch also. The Shepherd of the Hills was also good. If I am correct his first movie ever was the Big Trail, Directed also by John Ford.
John Wayne is an American Icon. Just because of the name John Wayne. In my family it's Un-American to not like John Wayne. I'm only 24 and I've seen all of his movies, but the time I was 2. Remembered them all by age 10. My sister and I would watch "Rio Lobo" and just being saying what ever was being said on the movie. And to this day, I still can to most of them, especially "Rio Lobo, Rio Bravo, Hatari, Hellfighters, McLintock, and In Harms Way". My Daddy was a huge John Wayne fan. He got to mean the MAN back in the 60's. On his ranch, my daddy hauled a load of cattle to his ranch. And it was his greatest day of his life. His first wife and kids, weren't really into it. Like "Whoopty Doo Dad." My mom, sister, and I always, say wish we could have been there. Now, that my Daddy is gone. He's in heaven with the "Duke" and we watch them to remember him more. NUMBER 1 American Icon HAS to be John Wayne. You can have your opinions, but like I said, it's just down right, un-american, in my family to not like John Wayne.
Plain and Simple he made pictures that
entertained and he loved his country
there will never be another DUKE
he is the word AMERICAN!
he is what the word is all about
no one will ever even come close to him
he is the greatest man ever lived
an im just pleased we have his movies to share with everyone
I agree with a lot of the others, all of his movies were great!!! I really can not pick just one. My girls are also 3rd generation of John Wayne fans. We can walk into a room with a televison playing a Duke movie and within about 2 seconds can name the movie. He is the GREAT American Hero of all time and knew how to make a great movie.
I love this Man,and his Movies,I only hope my Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren will get to see his movies and see what a true American Icon he was and Hero he still is today.I have been wondering what ever happened to his two sons Patrick and Ethan? I have not seen them on television and was wondering how their doing. This man is what American is all about he was a Great man and has left us with a legend. I'd vote for him for President,He was what America is all about, and he is still My Hero!!I love him and everything he stood for,God Bless you Johnny boy,and may you Rest in True Peace of mind, for now a days we have no TRUE peace of mind.Bring back the Good-ole-days and play John Wayne all day everyday Please, This Generation needs it,and so do I,and the rest of us. Honest.
My mother was a big fan and brought all her children up to believe in the hero. Her collection of treasures is the largest I have ever seen. Some friends say it's a museum. Mother passed away last year and I am now the caretaker of this tribute to the Great American and am proud.
John Wayne was first acclaimed to be a star after the production of the movie "Stagecoach". From this point on, his career only broadened and soared to the point of being a real Hollywood Icon, but more than that. John Wayne (Marion Morrison) became the symbol of what I true real, and great a American was. In fact, he became, in many ways, a man that represented everything good about America. His favorite movie was "Searchers" and it is used today as a mandatory study for students at the Academy of the Arts and Sciences in Film Making. The last movie he made was rather ironic in that it appeared to sum up his career from being one the best actors who made more films than most and even at his last days, he was the same person he was when he started his career but much wiser and better at what he did. Yes, John Wayne was a true American Icon. Let us never forget him and how he loved America. He wanted to join the Armed Forces during WWII, however, the leadership of the country thought he could do far more for the country by continuing what he had been doing and that was making films to keep the moral of the American people high and support the war effort here. No! I don't think that generations to come will soon forget John Wayne and the contribution hw made the the land he loved
Hondo,Rio Grande,Angel and badman and then there was the Alamo these are a few of my favorite. He was a great actor and a great American
The line from the Shootist, "I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be laid a hond on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them". This epitomizes his spirit, and the spirit of his movies.
And this also:
Feo, Fuerte, y Formal
The Duke was a man of character who made movies portraying what is best about this great country of ours.
To follow up and make a correction to my previous post. His last movie was the "Shootist." It did appear to sum up his live in his struggle with cancer on two occasions and was very sick with it while making the final movie mentioned above. I showed a man at his best who was the best at what he did and gave nothing more than 110%. He was a living example for all Americans in doing his best and never giving up even toward the end. Though he got the People's Choice Award, the Golden Globe award on many occasions, he won only one Oscar and that was for the "True Grit" which was toward the end of his career. It was awarded during the time of his first struggle with cancer. Oscars didn't mean as much to him as did the awards given to him by the PEOPLE he sought to entertain. Oscars were awarded by other actors and critics who liked a different style of movie than those that Wayne made. For me, John Wayne WAS THE BEST!
John Wayne has always been my favorite, mainly for the war pictures. My all time favorite is "In Harm's Way", but The Fighting Sea Bees, The Flying Leathernecks, The Green Beret, these were equally as good, not to mention the many westerns he filmed. How to you just pick one? He brought a sense of patriotism to the country at a time when it was greatly needed. There will never be another one like him. He is one actor I would have liked to have met. I never tire of seeing his movies, and wish they were shown more often.
1 THE QUIET MAN
2 HONDO
3 RED RIVER
WENT TO CONG IRELAND TO SEE WHERE THE QUIET MAN WAS MADE. JOHN WAYNE WAS AND STILL IS THE GREATEST.
i have been watching JOHN WAYNE for many years. i have a very large collection of tapes and c.d,s I love them all. He is truly an ICON
The Cowboys is my personal favorite, with The Shootist a close second. He dies in both of these, but his performance makes it all worthwhile. What a great actor!
I don't think that there is a movie staring The Duke that I have not seen less than five times. In fact I have lost count on most of them. I like them ALL. It is hard to pick one ove another as they are all fantastic movies. They don't make movies like The Duke's anymore. It matters not which movie it is good and well worth watching over and over.
John Wayne is the best. I was and have most of his movies. He's a real man, I would have to vote for all of them. He's Great........
A fan always.
I have been a Duke fan since forever. My family and friends don't understand how I can watch John Wayne's movies over and over. I know the lines perhaps better than the Duke did. The Searchers has to be the best he ever made but I watch any and every movie he made. Nobody is more American than the "Duke".
THANK YOU TO THE JOHN WAYNE FAMILY FOR SHARING THEIR HUSBAND AND FATHER WITH THE WORLD, JOHN WAYNE WAS AND ALWAYS WAS THE EPITOMY OF A GREAT AMERICAN HERO. GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU IN HIS HEAVENLY ARMS FOREVER. THANK YOU FOR BEING A TRUE AMERICAN HERO, WHICH WE ARE IN VERY SHORT DEMAND , THESE DAYS EXCEPT FOR ALL OF THE MANY MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDON FOR THIS COUNTRY
DUKE WATCH OVER THEM AND KEEP THEM SAFE.
I love John Wayne because his movies are some that the entire familly can watch together. Parents don't have to worry about the language, explisit sex, nor the bad morals. Wayne also introduced humor, dignity, and caring in his films, for which all Americans can appreciate. The making for the "Green Berets" at a time when the War and those who were fighting in it were being looked down upon, showed great courage on the the enitre cast for which I am very proud. My favorite Wayne movies are his war pictures, be it in the Pacific or across the Eastern Pond. "Branagan" is another one of his great films, "Island In The Sky", "The Sea Chase", "They Were Expendable", Flying Leathernecks", and "Wake Of The Red Witch" are some of his movies which are seldom seen and are also great movies. AMC please play some different John Wayne movies instead of the same ones over and over. There are so many to choose from A TRUE AMERICAN IDOL.
The Duke has been my favorite actor ever since I can remember. I had a poster of Hondo walking out of the desert on my dorm room closet door. Riding tall, taking guff off no one, commanding attention from his first scene to the last. The Shootist was a wonderful tribute to the man and to the period in which he brought to life. There has never been another like him.
Your Western list failed to include such classics as Rio Grande, Rio Lobo, El Dorado, Big Jake, Chisum, The Undefeated, The Sons of Katie Elder, The Commancheros, The Cowboys, The Horse Soldiers, Cahill US Marshall, The Three Godfathers, Angel and the Badman and so many more. My personnal favorite has always been The Cowboys perhaps because it was the first movie that I saw where my hero died. Such an impact. But Big Jake and Chisum also rank high on my list. On the non-Western side, you left out Donovan's Reef which has always made me smile though The Green Berets and The Quiet Man are probably my favorite.
I WOULD HAVE TO VOTE FOR ALL OF THEM.
THERE ISN'T ANYONE ELSE THAT COULD EVER BEAT JOHN WAYNE.......
A FAN FOREVER........
HAVE ALL OF HIS MOVIES AND WATCH THEM ALL THE TIME AND ALSO ON TV.
WISH HE WERE STILL HERE, BUT HE IS IN OUR HEARTS AND MEMORY.....
I love John Wayne and all his movies. What a man! I love what his pictures stand for. The all American way. To stand up for the weak. I voted above, but it didn't have all his movies on the list. Like Mcclintok, Angel and the Badman, Rooster Cogburn, Rio Grande, The three Godfathers, The longest Day, Hellfighters, Seebees, The shepherd of the hills, Barnum, The Green Berets, Big Jake, cahill U.S Marshall, Alamo, The sons of Katie Elder, etc.... I think you get the point. I even like the ones from the 30's and 40's. I can't think of the names of them, but one he plays a docter. then the one where he is a lawyer. The bodyguard turn oilman. The True stories he played. All the war movies. I don't like to watch the ones that he dies in, they're to sad.
He was a true Character, and awesome Actor who played Drama, Comedy, Romance, Action, & documentaries well.
He's one of the best-- simply because he had Character with a capital 'C' and it was reflected in his acting talents!
I love all the old serials, like "The Three Mesquiteers," and "Singin' Sandy." Anyone seen "Singing Sandy?" I saw them in college when they had old movie afternoons on campus (umpteenthousand years ago). They're wonderful fun, and man was he PURTY! I love "The Three Godfathers" with Ben Johnson and Pedro Armandarez, and anything with Maureen O'Hara, and the cavalry trilogy (Rio Grande, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Fort Apache). Heck, what's not to like? Although I actually never cared much for the ones he got killed in!
The Angel and the Badman. My wife even likes that movie and we watch it eveytimg we can. No matter where we come in on it.
I have hundreds of channels on my TV and when I am channel surfing and I see a Duke movie is on I watch it. I like every single one of his movies and I could never pick a best one.
My favorit wasn't listed! Big Jake! of course it is hard to pick 1 best.
I did not preview my last comment and the misspelled words are really my typos. When John Wayne got the rancher to let more water down stream is never fails to make me laugh. The Angel and the Badman is my fav.
The best duke movie of all time is Mcclintock withou a dought as far as westerns go. then it would have to be Hellfighters in our opinion.
I agree with many others, you left out too many great ones to pick the best. Plus, there are too many great ones to just pick one. My kids, both grown now, will alays know that all his movies are "classics." And we'll watch them a hundred times.
I grew up watching John Wayne. He was one of the greatest actor's in American history. No matter whether it was western, war, comedy, etc. there hasn't been an actor, in my opinion, as versital, and manly as he was. This opinion, even counts before he "got that suave walk."
Therefore, I can't just pick a 'favorite' - all his movies are my fav.'s.
I LIKE TRUE GRIT THE BEST.
THEY DON'T MAKE WESTERNS LIKE THE ONES
THE DUKE MADE.
The Searchers hands down, but he was bigger than life in person and in the movies.
There are so many John Wayne movies that I like. My most favorite is The Horse Soldiers. The Quiet Man was always my parents favorite. Any movie he made with Maureen O'Hara is also a favorite. Thanks for having the marathon. Maybe in the future you can do it again with some of his other movies.
John Wayne's believable portrayal of such a broad range of characters comes from his ability to not only understand his character, but also from his understanding of the human psyche. Pseudo-intellictuals will disagree, but they cannot back it up with a factual argument. John Wayne always will be a great actor and a great American.

I grew up loving John and I still love him even tho he is gone..How can anyone ever forget him...he made to many movies that were great...they all were great...but I really liked Hondo...ya know after they made him they broke the mold...there will never be another John Wayne...no one will ever fill those shoes...
There will never be another actor like Duke. He was an American Icon and still is.He was a man's man.John Wayne is a real American Hero.I am 62 years old and have all of his films. John Wayne made so many great movies, it is hard to pick a favorite. Here's a few:Red River, The Searchers, Chisum, Mcclintock and In Harm's Way to name a few.I regret that I never got to meet my hero. John Wayne, American.Thank You for The John Wayne Marathon of films don't stop.
No one has ever personified both being a true American manly virtue as he has.
I think it is wonderful that there are so many people out there who still think the world of John Wayne, as I always have. Personally, my favorite is McLintock, but actually love them all. I was blessed to meet John Wayne in Shreveport, Louisiana on December 16, 1978 (six months before his death). In fact, I skipped my sister's wedding to see him and was able to walk hand in hand with him. I consider it a miracle. God bless John Wayne!!
i have a collection of about 135 of john wayne's great movies but angel and the badman is my fav

My all time favorite John Wayne movie is The Green Berets. The choices on this poll are so limited. Any one of his movies could be the greatest because he was so consistant in his acting.
The Quiet Man, by far it shows John at his best! He is tough as nails! Reminds me of my Dad, And shows a Soft side that is never seen in any other Wayne film! He really worked hard in this role! I,m a Big Wayne fan I,m now collecting them In HD! #2 is a toss of the Searchers and True grit!
The best John Wayne movie of all time which is not even mentioned has to be The Cowboys by far!!!
Like everyone else has said, John Wayne made so many good movies. I was very fortunate to see him when he made True Grit as it was real close to where I was living at the time. As for his best movies, I love them all. Probably my favorites are McClintock, North to Alaska, and The Cowboys.

My two favorites are, "They were expendable" and Donavan's Reef; the first very serious; the second very funny

I've been watching and enjoying John Wayne all day. Thank you AMC for letting us have such an enjoyable Labor Day. It is hard to pick a favorite, as so many have said, if John Wayne is in it, it becomes a favorite. I am 59 years old and have loved him since I was a young girl. His movies are just good clean entertainment and he was what every girl hoped to find when she started looking for a husband; big, strong, handsome, honorable, true to himself and to his country. What every young man should strive for. He was everything good. Please have more John Wayne days.
John Wayne is my favorite actor of all time. His westerns his non westerns war movies and comedies show his acting skills. He stood for what he believed in on screen and off. There will never be another ... Thanks Eric Strange Jacksonville N.C
John Wayne reminds me of my husband. I love watching his movies. I chose "The Searchers" from your list, but I love his cavalry trilology, "Fort Apache", "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and especially "Rio Grande" and also "The Horse Soldiers". He was a real he-man, the embodiment of the spirit of America in his war movies, and tall in the saddle in his westerns. Maureen O'Hara summed it up when she appeared before Congress, he was "John Wayne, American".
As Maureen O'Hara said to Congress he was "John Wayne, American." When you look back at most of his movies you can say too that he was loyal to his friends, actors who became as beloved as the "Duke." Ward Bond, Harry Carey Jr., John Agar, Ben Johnson, Woody Strode...and like Wayne, most were passed over by the Oscars. If his movies are on, I watch them, over and over. I don't know that there will ever be an actor who will leave a legacy like his.
One of my favorites isa Blood Alley and Brannigan.
Any movie Mr. Wayne was a awesome man. I love him in all his movies,he's what a genleman is what about
The one Iwanted wasn't listed the three godfathers It showed tenderness cruilty mercy truthand love and responsiblity
He is A TRUE AMERICAN!! You left out so many of his movies on your list, I know you couldn't put them all. He was someone that a young man could look up too & say "I want to be like him when I grow up". And hopefully lots of young boys did that. I personally liked him best in the Westerns & Military movies, he was a great actor. He put himself into every role he did & that's what made him a star, not every actor could do that. I've always like him & will always love him!!
John Wayne embodies the type of man I want to be. In "The Shootist" he says "I won't be wronged, lied to, or laid a hand upon. I do not do these things to others and I require the same of them." Good words to live by. I love "Angel and the Badman", "Hatari", "In Harm's Way", and "Trouble Along The Way". "The Searchers" is in a class by itself. He has the most realistic human way of dealing with women that I have ever seen. Women and children are his weakness. He was, is, and will always be my #1 icon and role model.
John Wayne's best movies were The quiet man and Donovans's Reef. All his westerns were good, its hard to pick a favorite.

A True American Hero, and there will never be another like him..my fav movie was
"the cowboys"..
wally
I have read through most of the comments and I don't see "Rooster Cogburn" listed anywhere. I really enjoyed him in that movie with Katherine Hepburn. I feel very sad that they don't make movies like John Wayne was in any more. He stood for what was right and portrayed what true heroes really are supposed to be.
I love watching his movies, but one of my favorites in "The Kentuckian". Has everybody forgotten that one?
I chose "...Liberty Valance" but my real favorites are "Big Jake" and "The Green Berets". How many mothers out there will admit to naming a son after 'The Duke'? Well I did, and not ashamed to admit it!
It's just too hard to chose just 1. My personal favorite has always been Big Jake, but it isn't listed or played enough. No doubt he is the ultimate American icon! He represents what made this country great! The things too many have forgotten.
John Wayne .... I feel the only befitting and proper statement for this man is that he was a 'true genuine man'~! He is what men should follow as a pattern, strong, decisive, intelligent, compassionate and honest`!! His legacy is his wonderful children, and family, and his movies that portray life as it should be~!! Yes, that sounds old fashioned, but when people treated each other with respect and kindness the world seemed to be a much better place~!! He tried to live his life as an honest man,,,,he was and is still a very loved man,~!! Yes, his on screen characters were just that,,, on screen,,, but in real life to his public, I believe he truly tried and was honest, and compassionate,,~!! Love is the greatest gift we have all been given,,it was his basic quality and he tried to show others to use it more ,,,and he did it in a subtle way , by treating his public as he wanted to be treated~!! To truly honor the Great Epitome of a True American , John Wayne, is to follow in his footsteps toward fellow man~!! He was not perfect as the rest of us,,,,but he did damn good for the position in life that was thrust upon him,,~!! As for choosing a favorite,,,mine i would say is all of them,,,,,,~!!
Every movie John Wayne did, is great! To where it is hard just pick, just one movie! He will always be an Hollywood Icon, for many more years and hopefully beyond! Hopefully no one will ever forget him, how great an actor he was!
Quiet Man wins because this is a non-ranking system (plurality). Without the Hare method a.k.a. instant runoff voting, it is expected that the woman's vote will have the leading vote even if not a majority.

If you like it ask AMC TV to use it in the next poll.
I have watched John Wayne, all my life. My father worship him. My Dad would call my brother and I in from playing to watch his movies. He also had a very good collection of all his movies. My Dad also may sure all 6 of his grandkids and 2 great-grandkids knew who he was and how great he was. When the kids stayed with him, he would always tell them to go and pick out a movie, but it better be a John Wayne movie. I miss that, his favorite was "Big Jake" he knew it by heart. My favorite is the "Seachers". He will live on for ever, at least in our family.
There are so many great John Wayne movies. I own many on DVD and I have the DVR recording them any time they are on while I am away. I would have to say the Searchers is everything a Western should be. John Wayne was at his best and the movie gets better each time I watch it. I named my first son Ethan after John Wayne's character. PLEASE KEEP PLAYING THESE MOVIES. My kids love them and it is great to get the family togther to watch them. Today's kids need these types of films. Everyone can related and kids still dream of being just like John Wayne, be it a fire fighter like in Hell Fighters, a cowboy, a pilot, or a soldier. Everyone loves the Duke.
How can you pick one favorite when its the DUKE. He was and still is the best and will always be the DUKE. HATARI, HELLFIGHTERS, MCCLINTOCK and RIO BRAVO are some of my favorites to name a few. Please show more John Wayne and add my top 4 picks to your frequent show list. Bring on more JOHN WAYNE MOVIE MARATHONS!!
I like his early westerns, but one of my favorites is the Shootist. Great performance.
John Wayne IS what america is all about! He personified what a REAL man is and always should be;HONEST and TRUE.Too bad there are no great actors with his caliber anymore.
I think these men should get exactly what they asked for. YOU GO BIG JAKE!
I have to agree with all of you. If your going to vote on John Waynes movies than you should at least list them all. My favorit wasn't listed either; "The Green Berets" and I think I messed up the spelling on that.
My father was a big fan of John Waynes, He was named Wayne after him. When he was little people nicked named him "Duke", not knowing that he was named after him.
When my father passed away in 97, I received his John Wayne collection. Movies that had never even been opened to watch. They still haven't been watched. Anyway; My dad was a lot like John Wayne; cold, hard, distant and yet loyal and honest... he was one of the good guys that would give you the shirt off his back and do anything for you, but at the same time DON'T CROSS HIM!
The Duke was a hero, one we didn't have to be ashamed of when our children wanted to be like him.
One never tires of watching John Wayne in action. He's the best! I have always loved watching his films. They are filled with determination, sensitivity, comedy and romance. Although, I too, have many favorites . . . High and the Mighty, The Quite Man, Commancheros, Chisum, Rio Bravo, El Dorado, I did choose The Searchers as being one of his very best. He truely lived the role of Ethan! John Wayne always has and always will be an American Icon. Thank you from all of us, who have for years, enjoyed John Wayne's films, and thank you too, for letting our future generation see what a turely fine actor he was. His role model was taken from us way too soon.
When I grew up, John Wayne was my one and only idol. Raised on movies like The Quiet Man,Stagecoach,The Son's Of Katie Elder,True Grit,North To Alaska,Rio Lobo, and so many more. My, how can you possibly pick just one favorite movie? Can't be done. The Searchers and The Shootist really tells about what John Wayne is all about! AMC,you can never show enough John Wayne movies. PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING. To the most awsome actor of all time, their could never be another like the DUKE!!!
Thanks AMC for honouring John Wayne on this weekend. There has never been and never will be someone with such a diverse talent for various types of movies (western, military, comedy) and also with the values he embodied and was not shy about publicly espousing. Favourites not listed include the Green Berets, McClintock, North to Alaska, Rio Bravo.
One of the problems with youth today is they have no role model to exemplify the values that were instilled in us years ago just from watching westerns (some of the prior posts touched on this). Everyone needs John Wayne as a role model!
There are so many wonderful comments about
America's finest actor/gentleman that to try to come up with something different is probably impossible. We could watch "THE DUKE" in every one of his movies over the period of a week and still have some more to watch! I too have many favorites; starting with his very last movie "THE SHOOTIST" to all the movies which also
starred Maureen O'Hara. They fit together like Desi & Lucy; or Fred & Ginger in their own genre! Every American child should be shown several of Mr. Wayne's movies, that they might learn what integrity, honor, respect, and belief in family, country and God really mean. I also believe we do have another gentleman actor who has come along during the 'Baby Boomer' generation who stands in respect for the same beliefs as "DUKE"! The man to whom I refer is Tom Selleck. IMHO,he too makes a very good role model for today's youth. Happy Labor Day, everybody, God Bless one and all!
I love every movie John Wayne made, even the B-Movies are good. I think it was terrible when Hollywood turned their backs on him because he thought Americans should support the men serving their country in Vietnam. It wasn't about whether the war was right or wrong - it was about the guys who were there! He is the greatest American Hero. He WAS the man you saw in the movies. It wasn't all acting.
My favorite is In Harm's Way.
I can't help but mention They Were Expendable.
I wish that many of the John Ford films had been done in color. The scenery in color would add much.
Enjoy John Wayne films greatly.
You left a lot of movies out.Ilike
Rio Grandy. My wife Betty likes
Rio Grandy to.
I have three heroes in my life, first is my father, next is my physician and the third is John Wayne.
I was raised on watching his movies as a kid. He spoke his mind, fought for what he beleived in, and was fiercely loyal to his family and friends. He was not afraid to poke fun at his own expense. They had a congressional made to honor him. The medal says "John Wayne American". What more can you say!!!
It's so hard to pick one favorite movie of his but here are my favorites.
The Searchers
The Quiet Man
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
True Grit
Eldorado
In Harms Way
With Wayne I don't think you can list your favorite's or his best because even his early movies there was nothing like him. He represented good and evil and unlike today's movies, good always was a clear winner.
I think there is a Wayne picture that fits any mood, comedy, drama or just plain entertainment.
When there is a John Wayne picture on you can stop channel surfing. You hae found the best for the next two hours.
He isn't the only good actor in his movies, there were always good co-stars or support actors that goes unrecognized in supporting "The Duke" but he went a long way to make them shine as well. Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr and so many others that played to his expressions, mannerisms and overall charactor.
Thank you for playing not only Wayne but all the great movies.
I have just about everyone of John Wayne's movies. I am 71 years old and my husband was on dialysis for 6 years and he was an avid Wayne fan. We watched his movies over and over again while on dialysis. We bought most of his films after 1961. The first we saw together on our first date was North to Alaska so this one will always be a favorite. We watched so many a love so many of them. I noticed that many of the above comments left out Hondo this too was one of our favorites and The High and Mighty. This one was the first airline disaster about to happen movie. Again he was such an icon!! He will remain my hero forever...
No where ever in the history of film will there be a greater actor who can play his roles with such honesty and integrity and just be himself to bring forth that character. I have spent many wonderful hours watching my favorite actor of all times doing what comes so natural to him. What a giving actor to all those who have worked with him in his films. We will never see another actor, father, husband of his caliber again in my lifetime.
I LOVE ALL JOHN WAYNE MOVIES - some you do not mention. First is Searchers, 2nd - Mcclintock, Rio Lobo, Quiet Man, Rio Grande - ALL OF THEM. HE IS A TRUE AMERICAN ICON. NEED TO SHOW MORE OF HIS MOVIES ON TV.
We are 4 generations of avid 'DUKE' fans and each time we watch his movies they get better and better. Thank you John Wayne where ever you are!!!
My husband was leaving DC at 6am and The Quiet Man was on early that morning. I dropped him off at the curb and hurried home so I wouldn't miss another bit. He didn't mind because he knows how much I love John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara's characters.
The Searchers is probably my favorite since I remember watching it over and over on the old "Million Dollar Movie" program. I learned all the dialogue. But I still think it's Wayne's best western because of his portrayal of the character's complicated yet simple personality: from tenderness to hardness, and humor to gravity, John Wayne carries it all off so believably.
you left out some of the best In harms way and Hellfighers just to name 2
I think John Wayne was the greatest! I have watched his movies for years and am in awe of him. My favorites are The Cowboys, and Rio Bravo. There are just too many to choose from, and they were all great. God bless him!
Having watched John Wayne movies from the the 40's its hard to pick one movie as my favorite. All I can say is that any movie he made was great because of the way he made each person in the movie come to life. John Wayne was a true American hero.
MY BEST JOHN WAYNE MOVIE IS "McCLINTOK," ALTHOUGH IT WASN'T ON THE LIST IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. IT PROTRAYED A COMMICAL SIDE OF JOHN WAYNE RATHER THAN THE SERIOUS NATURE OF MOST OF HIS CHARACTERS.
I love and miss Daddy Duke,Jhon Wayne Cowboy With love, Sonja
I think the alamo was one of his best movies my son just got me can with five of his younger movies 14 hours of john wayne you gotta love him
I agree with Homer Cook, My favorite John Wayne movie is "McClintok" but it wasn't listed which it should have been. I loved the commical side of John and I think he works well with His leading lady Maureen O'Hara.
The best John Wayne movie and the best western ever . . . The Searchers!
What a character study that movie was and JW should have won the Oscar for that role, not True Grit. While Rooster Cogburn is an unforgetable character, he certainly does not compare to Ethan Edwards.
I picked The Man Who Shot Liberty... I know it won't win #1 but I liked how he was sort of in the background to Jimmy Stewart and yet showed this vulnerability that really made the movie. I also love Hatari!! The Sons of Katie Elder was a family favorite. I also loved it when he was funny. Loved the swagger & voice which were so uniquely him. JW is the best. At my graduation luau party I put up pictures from Donovan's reef - what fun.
It almost impossible to pick any one best picture from an actor like The Duke. He brought a unique candor to every role he played. I have a feeling that the off screen Wayne was much like the on screen one; tell it like it is, shoot straight, no soft soap. You had to love him or hate him, there's no in between for an actor like this one. I'm fortunate to be part of a generation that was able to go to a theater and see this man do what he so obviously loved to do. Thanks for giving all of us a chance to see him often on AMC.
John Wayne was the best "Hero" to ever grace a movie screen.. I personally think his best role was as Rock Torry in one of the best war movies ever made, In Harms Way.
I am 66. I've been in love with John Wayne all my life, still am. He's the only movie star/actor/celebrity that men didn't mind their women loving, they could see why. Keep his movies on, they are the only movies that we enjoy watching 50 times; there are no others that warrant that kind of watching over and over again.
letterman top 10 list >>> #10.trilogy [rio grande, fort apache , she wore a yellow ribbon] > #9. rio bravo/rio lobo > #8. quiet man > #7. red river > #6. in harm's way > #5. the shootist > #4. true grit > #3. liberty valance > #2. searchers > #1. donovan's reef ! *special mention to "America , Why I Love Her"
John Wayne never portrayed a character he would have been ashamed to play as an American and as a father. He epitiomized what the love of movies is all about. I'm a woman in my sixties, but I've seen every one he made and still watch everytime one is shown on television. He is a true American hero today and I feel he will always be. He loved our country and set an example for all of us. He is the best and I agree with the person above who wrote that he should have received the Oscar for "The Searchers".
Anne Johnson
i am 53 ; my father is 89 ; we both know the dialogue to every john wayne movie ; that doesn't stop us from watching whenever one comes on [though dad doesn't care as much for john out of the saddle, excepting donovan's reef] .
he's just a brillant actor.he and john ford were made for each other.and i like the way they keep almost all the same actor's toghether. what ever happended to old mose?
There are too many great John Wayne movies to begin to think of them all. I love North to Alaska but it isn't by for the only one. Eldorado among many other films. It would be great if more John Wayne movies were played more fequently.
My dad was a John Wayne fan who dragged me to see "Island in the Sky" when I was a teenager. I never forgot the story and cast. It remains among my favorite movies. I still watch "The Quiet Man" in rememberance of my dad every St. Patrick's Day. PAt in Surprise, AZ
Thats a hard question for me to answer about what is my favorite John Wayne Movie.
He has always been my hero since I was little girl. My father reminded me of the Duke all the time.
My favorite movie was True Grit just for the one part where he puts the horses reins in his mouth and goes after the bad guys both guns going at the sametime. Nobody else could have pulled that off expect for the Duke.Plus who can forget Big Jake or North to Alaska.
My mother favorite movies were Horse Soliders and The Searchers. He should have won his oscar for The Searchers.
JOHN WAYNE IS THE BEST OF OUR COUNTRY.WE NEED HIS MOVIES NOW MORE THAN EVER.IT GIVES US HOPE IN OURSELVES.WHAT WE CAN BE.MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN KNOW HIS MOVIES.I HOPE THIER CHILDREN WILL KNOW HIM.PLEASE SHOW HIM MORE AND MORE.THANKS AMC FOR REMEMBERING.
I think one of the best movies he ever made was "Wings of Eagles" because it is a true story of a Naval Flier who broke his neck in a fall and because of that he was paralized and almost died, he then became a great writer of war stories and actually ended up commanding an aircraft carrier in WWII. What better man to portray Frank "Spig" Weed than John Wayne.
How do you pick a favorite when they are all favorites,a couple that you left out
Big Jake, Donovans Reef, Green Berets
The man could not make a bad movie there
will never be another Duke
1. True Grit
2. The Cowboys
3. The Shootist
John Wayne IS SIMPLY THE BEST in all his movies. I have to say my favorites are Westerns. But I do watch them all.
Any chance I have to watch a John Wayne movie, I do so. Watching a John Wayne movie is like watching the movie for THE VERY FIRST TIME. EVERYTIME!
John Wayne always played John WAyne no matter what character he portrayed.
His ideals he stated on screen were basic to human dignity and were ideals to strive for.
Rio Grande is not on the list, and I like it best. Sue
Two glaring omissions from your list of John Wayne westerns are Fort Apache and Rio Grande, which were the other two films that made up John Ford's cavalry trilogy along with She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. However, The Searchers is my favorite John Wayne film. It was also his personal favorite. He always said he felt that his potrayal of Ethan Edwards was his best work. He even named one of his sons after the character.
John Wayne was and always will be the greatest film icon of all time. His fame and popularity transcended his film work. He's as much a symbol of America as Uncle Sam and the bald eagle. His death was the end of an era for Hollywood and films. They could never be the same again. No other actor will ever acheive the same level of larger-than-life appeal as The Duke.

Wow. I guess I'm not too surprised but very glad to see other JW fans out there. I agree with all - about John Wayne - american.
a number of good movies were left out: Trouble along the Way; Without Reservations etc. etc.
It's so hard to pick a favorite, because I like them ALL. No he never made a bad movie.
He made it clear between right & wrong, he defended the helpless, letting everyone see what a real man is!
God Bless John Wayne.
I agree show more of his movies, less repeats............so glad they are releasing more & more.
Thanks AMC for showing the JW movies.

John Wayne personnafied all that we aspire to be as Americans, as Men, as professionals. He is the consumate Roll Model, his life was a life that we all could relate to, common individual to a 3 star Admiral in the United States Navy. John Wayne made it possible for all of us to dream big, challenge ourselves to greatness and to persuit those goals with all the zeal we possess. I am thankful that I was a generation that grew up with John Wayne, with each passing day that I mature, with each time I see one of his films, I appreciate him and my hero just a little more.
Thanks John for the Memories.
The Duke's had so many, but I think The Horse Soldiers ranks up there at the top.
I'm hoping you are going to use the info from this poll to feature more John Wayne movies. I am very disappointed that you ask us to vote for our favorite Duke movie and then give us such a short list to vote for. He has so many great movies that it is difficult to choose. Here are a few of my fav's. North to Alaska, Donovans Reef, Hatari, The Quiet Man, The War Wagon, True Grit, Rooster Cogburn, Eldorado, Rio Bravo, Rio Lobo, McClintock, Chisum, In Harms Way, The Fighting Seabees, The Sands of Iwo Jima, Red River, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, The Green Berets, Big Jake. And although he wasn't the focus of the Longest Day it was still a great performance and a great movie. And I believe he knew that and felt the story of that day was more important than he himself starring in it, another measure of a great man.I went to see all of these and many more with my dad at the "drive in" back in the 60's and 70's, it's really to bad that movies aren't like this anymore. Clint Eastwood is another American Icon with a tremendous number of great movies of which I'm sure you know.
John Wayne is the ultimate American and role model for men, women and children. He was a symbol of what made our country great and will be remembered forever.
In today's environment, we need role models and heros such as John Wayne.
It is hard to pick an all-time favorite John Wayne film. God Bless-John Wayne.
Although I enjoyed the John Wayne Labor Day Marathon, I think you could have made it more interesting by showing the "trilogy" of Fort Apache, Rio Grande, & She Wore A Yellow Ribbon consecutively.
For future John Wayne marathons, why not listen to the comments of your viewers and show the movies your viewers prefer to see. AMC seems to show the same movies over & over, how about more selection?
Like so many others, I think John Wayne was a great actor and great American. And like so many others I to find it hard to choose, but I'll stick with The Quiet Man.
I love every John Wayne movie!!!! .he's the best actor that ever made a movie. But i don't understand why amc deems it nessary to cut the movie's and leave parts out.my goodness just think how much people could enjoy his movies if they got to see the whole thing!!!
Will there be a John Wayne film shown that I didn't watch? That'll be the day.
One of my favorite films of all times is Big Jake. Of course The Duke added to films that he only briefly appeared.(The Longest Day, How The West Was Won)
All of his films are special.
To many to pick one, here are a few.
HONDO
The Searchers
Stagecoach
Red River
They Were Expendable
The Quiet Man
Oh my, I see this is getting plenty of comments! I guess everybody has somthing to say about John Wayne. Has there ever been a truer icon of America? My all time favorite Duke movie is "Big Jake". It just has so many of those classic lines that made John Wayne great.
THERE WERE NO BAD JOHN WAYNE MOVIES.
BUT TRUE GRIT STAYS WITH ME THE MOST.
YOU CAN PLAY THEM 24-7 IF YOU WISH, AND I WILL NEVER CHANGE THE T.V.
I must admit the truth, that it is much too difficult to name just ONE of John Waynes movies as being my favorite. I suspect that if not all, then most of the people that think highly of John Wayne feel the same way as I do. But, if I had a gun to my head, or something as drastic as that, and I absolutely had to pick just ONE movie as my favorite of John Waye'; it would likley be The Quiet Man, with the Sands of Iwo Jima coming in at a close second. While this goes without saying that the following movies; She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Searchers, Red River, Stagecoach, The Shootist, True Grit, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and Rio Bravo are not outstanding movies with superb acting by John Wayne and his supporting cast and should be held near to the heart by his fans. I know that I have for my life, and will continue to do so. In addition, my seven year old son loves to watch the "Dukes" movies with me, and I cannot wait to share the "Dukes" movies with my other three young boys.
As a man that grew up watching John Wayne in movies, every single movie, and learning that his actions on screen and off, is how a man is to behave. That is, with pride, dignity, self respect, respect toward others, honestly, maturely; and most specifically toward women.
Thank You,
Cletus Whirl

John Wayne is the essence of the "American Hero". I have been a John Wayne fan since I was a little girl thanks to my dad. He got me into watching them with him as a child and over the years I enjoy them more and more. I have a few favorites but I love them all. The ones I watch only when I have to are the ones that he dies in the films. Those I don't like to be reminded he is no longer with us. He has left an impact for those who adired him or not...you had to respect the man for his intergrity, commitment and love for his country and the people he held dear. He was a man of calibur. You don't find many these days with those qualities. I for one wish I could have known the the man behind John Wayne.
This day and time the quality of movies are not what they used to be. I miss those days. Now if there is not a bloody scence, or violence with sex in them it won't make it off the cutting floor. How sad. I would like to be able to see good quality movies again.
June
There isn't a John Wayne movie I didn't like. I especially liked Hondo and the High and the Mighty. I am glad they have released to television some little known films such as Island in the Sky. I have DVD with almost all of his earlier Westerns and love to watch them all.
John Wayne will always be one of the top ICONS in American films. He together with Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, Robert Mitchum, Charlton Heston, Tom Selick, Bruce Willis & others have shown the world the AMERICAN DREAMS & PRINCIPLES in their actions, movies & TV appearences and their public speeches.
It was very hard to pick just one movie of John Wayne's career as the best. Each film had different object lessons to be learned. If is was acting - The Quiet Man, The Searchers,In Harms Way, True Grit & The Shootist showed his abilities. Love of country & honoring the American patriots - Fort Apache, Rio Grande, Horse Soilders, The Alamo,They Were Expendable, Back to Battan,The Flying Tigers, The Fighting Seabees, Sands of Iwo Jima, Wings of Eagles, The Longest Day, In Harms Way and the Green Berats depicted those feelings. All his other films showed his love of AMERICA & the Freedoms it gave all people, including Indians, Hispanics, Asians & Blacks.
THERE WILL NEVER BE AN ACTOR(or Actors) of TODAYS' Hollywood elite to measure up to the likes of a John Wayne (Jimmy Stewart was the next closet actor to the ICON status to John Wayne). Other honorable mentions would be BOB HOPE, MARTHA RAE, Charlton HESTON, & GARY SINESE
There is no question in my mind that John Wayne should have won an Academy Award for the Searchers. Considering the time period, it was a very realistic western. I think it was one of the best if not the best western ever made.
john wayne best movie,or for that matter, anyone'best movie is 'THE COWBOYS'it has everything, great story, great cast, great music,in short it is the best
I like war movies like Midway.
John Wayne is not only one of America's greatest actors but he's one of are greatest Americans. John Wayne is All American just like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. I always look forward to Our birthdays because I know that I can catch a movie tribute. Also, I can still remember, as a kid, watching all his movies with my dad - a memory I will never forget. We both have a JW movie collection and it only gets bigger every year. Let us never forget John Wayne represents all that's great with America and more young people should be aware of his Great Legacy. We will never again have an actor that will have his presents on film or in America culture. AMC keeping playing his movie marathons for the next 100 years so more people can experience The Duke.
While you don't think of John Wayne as a comedic actor, there were several movies that had comedic touches, notably "The Comancheros" and "Trouble Along The Way" which is one of my favorite sports movies. But my all-time favorite John Wayne movie is "North To Alaska" which is an outright comedy.

You have to think AMERICAN or maybe a TRUE FIGURE of a MAN when you think JOHN WAYNE. He was Cowboy,a man of war and a quiet man, with the values that make you think of your father or even grandfather, all that is good, but stern. My favorite western is RED RIVER, the SEARCHERS and the MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, but then I love them all. One left off the poll of western movies that I relly enjoy watching is the FLAME of the BARBERY COAST, you don't see that much anymore.
I have loved John Wayne (The Duke) Since I can remember. I think the quiet man and hatari are his best non westerns, though I love all of his movies. I agree with so many of the other comments, if you are going to have A john wayne holiday marathon there is no reason to replay them as you have an ample selection to choose from and so many excellent movies. I hope his legend will live forever.
How dare so many of us leave without mentioning ROOSTER COGBURN - what it lacks in storyline is more than made up for watching Wayne and Hepburn "play" off of each other.
I have watched John Wayne movies ever since I was a little girl. My grandfather got me hooked. Still today I could set and watch his movies all day, and have when AMC have shown them.
John Wayne has too many great movies to vote for just one favorite. However, if I had to choose just one, it would probably be The Cowboys. Close seconds are his war movies, Hatari!, Hellfighters, McLintock, The Shootist, and The Quiet Man.
The Searchers was the pinnacle of John Waynes career. He WAS Ethan Edwards. This magnificent John Ford masterpiece is also the greatest western ever made.
He's an icon because his movies always portrayed the best of this country. He was always loyal to his friends, and wasn't beyond giving someone else top billing, like in "The Man who shot Liberty Valence" the arguement can be made it was actually a Jimmy Stewart film because the Duke didn't over power Jimmy's character.
Duke always looked out for his fellow man. Like the medal that Congress issued in his honor simply but aptly said-John Wayne, American
John Wayne was the best because he was simply right vs. wrong. He stood for America as the framers of our constitution meant America to be. No liberal vs. conservatives and big money interests' getting what they want at the expense of the rights of the common everyday American.
John Wayne was and still is an icon. He was and still is a man to look up to in a world that dont have very many people to look up to. My 4 year old son is a John Wayne fan!!! He is the best.
1. McLintock
2. Donovan's Reef
3. Hatari.
Like so many others who have made such wonderful comments, I, too, have a difficult time picking my favorite John Wayne film. I'm so hooked on his work that I have a John Wayne room in my home. His hard talking upright walking ways remind me of my father. He can say more with one look than most actors say with 1,000 words. Even his walk is so expressive. I've never seen one of his movies that doesn't have a fight scene, and all have humor allowing you to see his lighter side. I have never understood what kept him from having a room full of Oscars.
My husband ask i vote for him. I join in his selection. There is not a movie the JW made that is not a favorite of ours. He must have had a remarkable upbringing. His values are reflected in films. Even his very early ones show this attribute. We chose the QUIET MAN,watch it often, both our adult children agree with us. Thanks for keeping this Great American icon for postarity.
The Duke is and always will be my favorite actor. I can't pick 1 favorite since there are numerous ones that I watch repeatedly. One that doesn't get mentioned often is "The Fighting Kentuckian". Great cast and movie. The Duke's movies just make you feel good and I think that's the highest praise for an entertainer.

I have to say, I love ALL his movies, but I thought he was the Total Man in The Quiet Man. He was tough and tender, and the movie really showed his range well. He was sometimes underestimated I believe, but in that movie, he shone. Maureen O'Hara was superb as well! Everyone in it was super. They just don't make 'em like John Wayne anymore, today's stars are laughable in comparison.
CONFESSION---In the 1960's when all my friends had Beatles posters on their bedroom walls, I had a life size John Wayne poster. It's impossible to choose my favorite movie. To paraphrase Will Rogers, I never met a John Wayne movie I didn't like.
In harms way is one of my most favorites as is the shootist. I bought them both!!!
I am sorry you left out "The Shepherd of the Hills". I just happened to see it again this morning after seeing it many, many times. If it comes on again, I will be the first in line with the remote.
What happen to Hondo? That is his best Movie.
John Wayne is the greatest actor of all time its realy hard to believe he is just an actor sometimes you might think that he really is a cowboy. Even though people my age usually don't like John Wayne (most people that are 14 and 15 in my school don't even know who he is and everytime I flip up my cell phone I have to explain to everyone the old guy on my wallpaper is not my grandpa its John Wayne
There are so many plastic people and lousy role model in movies today. John Wayne was a hero to his nation to millions of fans world wide. Some WWII vets say he didnt serve during WWII because he was a big star when other big names did. I understand there were good reasons and legal ones! President Bush should honor MR Wayne with a Navy ship in his honor I feel. I feel hed be supporting are troops 1000% if he were still alive.
I agree with Kathie who posted Sep 3rd, El Dorado is my favorite John Wayne movie, it has action, humor, great stars and that classic good-by kiss he gives Maudie before he leaves for 6 or 7 months is awesome. And who else could back up a horse after turning down Lou Asner but The Duke. Love that scene! My father met John Wayne in San Diego, Ca while he was in the Navy. So I was brought up on John Wayne, my father and I are crazy about him. I have a dedicated wall in my house called My John Wayne Wall, and all it has is John Wayne pictures and such on it. Thanks for letting me input
It is impossible for me or any of my family members and friends to pinpoint a favorite movie that John Wayne was in!
All of us could watch his movies 24hr a
day for days and never get tired or bored.
Why haven't you been showing "HATARI"? if
you have shown it then I and everyone eals has missed it.
IF at times you do show John's movie in the day, it would be nice to see them in the evening around 6:00pm.
All of us that have not sent AMC an
e-mail would like to thank you for keeping this station WONDERFUL!
God bless all of you, Michael
I really think The Searchers is the best western made. Two movies that also rate high on my list but were not on the title choices are "The Horse Soldiers" and "In Harm's Way", excellent movies!
The Fighting SeaBees and They were Expendable. Are my all time favorite!!!
WHOLLY COW!!!!! Almost forgot that great humorous western "McClintock"
I like the WW2 flix, I'm not a western guy. My personal favorite is "IN Harms Way" I think the Duke was a little older and his relationship with Patricia Neal who was also getting up there seemed genuine. Kirk Douglas was good as a slime dog and Burgess Merideth helped make the Duke seem like a real Admiral.Oh yea, I liked watching Patrick O'neal get slapped around buy Commander Eddington. Oh, I almost forgot Henry Fonda and his southern accent. With the exception of one toy boat scene "In Harms Way" is a great Movie!
John Wayne is a movie icon because he was a draft dodger and he had to do something to atone for that.
John Wayne stared in so many great movies, it's hard to choose just one. Although he played along side so many other good actors, He was and is the greatest actor ever! He is the man, the Duke of all times. Thanks AMC for remembering such a great man, and the greatest memories he left behind!!
John Wayne has been and icon in my family. I am only 23 yrs. old and I absolutly LOVE him!!!! I am in the middle of building a collection of his westerns. I love the westerns and watch them over and over!!! I just can't get enough. I wish that my grandpa and I could have met him! That would have been a dream come true!!! I wish the best for his family and all the other fans out there!!!
The Cowboys is the best movie!
My two favorite John Wayne movies are Rio Lobo and The Green Berets. Each show that good wins over evil, and how relevent these movies are today.
there are so many to choose from, it is hard to pick just one. i am going to pick two....they are "hellfighters" and "mclintock". as others have said, so many of john wayne's movies were left out. i grew up watching his movies and will continue to do so. there will never be another person like him. he was the best and one of a kind!!!!!
I've watched John Wayne films since i was about 6 or 7 years im 19 years old now and i still watching the Duke on my TV now, my favorite movie of him is Probably The Searchers, he did a great performance in my opninion a very oscar worthy one.
JOHN WAYNE IS THE BEST THERE IS IN WESTERNS. I LIVE OFF HIS MARATHONS WHEN THEY ON ON AMC. RIO BRAVO, RED RIVER, TRUE GRIT ARE 3 OF HIS BEST. BUT AS WE ALL KNOW ALL HIS MOVIES ARE GREAT.
my favorite john wayne movie of all is el dorodo. I would like to see it very much. he was the greatest.
Wow!
Where's the discussion about "Hondo". It's a tie between "Hondo" and " The Searchers". Any body who can"t understand this is totally lost.
John Wayne was not only the greatest star of all time, he was the spirit of what used to be called America. Today that spirit is almost gone and will never return. You can see the loss of our tradional values in our people every day, if you watch the news on television, or read the paper. It's a sad thing to watch others and their dark philosophies steal the land.
His name say's it all.
JOHN WAYNE,
true american, best actor, best movie, OUR HERO what else can we say?
I have been watching "The Quiet Man" for about seven years. Now I have a sailboat that was named "White O'Mornin" by the original owner and it has remained the same (I am the third owner). Last week while boating on the Intercoastal Waterway in Florida a bridge tender asked the name of the boat and after we told him he knew that it was from the movie. It's much more popular than I had thought! If you haven't seen it make sure you do. It's my favorite! Thanks AMC.
Always loved the John Wayne/John Ford team. Especially the cavalry trilogy of Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande. Then there is Red River which has become a classic, Searchers which is exceptional, Hondo, Quiet man, Sands of Iwo Jima, They were Expendable.
I haven't seen a John Wayne movie that I didn't like. My favorite is one that most have hardly seen: The High and the Mighty. I love his westerns as well as the war movies.
How bout The War Wagon
the cowboys
McLintock is one of the best comedies ever made. There's so much undertone in it and the actors are great. The collecction of actors in this film is truly wonderful. This should be included in one of John Wayne's best western comedies. I don't miss an opportunity to watch it and it's not shown nearly enough!
Many great movies were left off the list (e.g. The Alamo, Fort Apache), but I chose Red River because he was in his prime and played the Big Man so well. Every time I land at John Wayne airport (Orange County, CA), I stand by that incredible statute of the Duke with the 50 foot American flag behind it and reflect on how much I (and America) miss him. How refreshing to compare his unconditional love for America with the self absorbed anti-American rants of today's actors.
his best film is The Searchers.
john wayne was great but clint eastwood is the greatest!!!
John "Duke" Wayne has a special place in my heart. My mother worked for Republic Studios. She was a secretary to alot of the famous people that worked out of Republic: Duke, Roy Rogers,Gene Autrey, etc. During that time she lived at Autrey's ranch. She dated Duke,(in-between wifes) and went on location during the filming of "The Angel and the Badman". during this time Duke asked my mother to marry him. She didn't like his life style and declined. She was able to take photos on location. (which I have in safe keeping)
I also have signed photos from other famous actors of the time. As well as home photos from living with Gene Autrey.
So "The Angel and the Badman "have a special place in my heart as one of Duke's better movies.
There are too many by Mr. Wayne to pick 1 all-time favorite. I voted for The Searchers because I think it best represents the dichotomy of "the western civilization". Wayne was a consummate actor and made not just westerns, but mystery and modern action, and best of all; our war films with every service; seem true and effortless. There can be no western made without a wayne contribution in some form or other. Wayne IS Western.
The Quiet Man hands down, but Blood Alley,
Angel & the Badman, El Dorado, Rio Lobo, In Harms Way are all very good. I miss being able to watch movies starring an actor I can believe in.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shootist, El Dorado, True Grit, the Searchers...all classics. The Duke was the best.
1. Big Jake
2. Hondo
3. The Fighting Kentuckian
4. Green Beret
5. Chisum
What about In Harms Way and The Horse Soldiers
I do believe he made many excellent movies
so its hard to say which is my favorite of all
I agree with many of the posted movies. In Harm's Way, The Horse Soldiers, The Flying Tigers (Father flew with the Tigers in the 5th Air Force, not the original AVG), The Quiet Man and The Long Voyage home (Is title correct? German Merchant Captain, start of WWII). Lloyd Smith, Oklahoma.
John Wayne is apple pie, mom and the American way....and he lived what he believed...would love to have about a 100 of him in Iraq and it would be over soon...He stood his ground and was not wishy washy at all!!!!!!!!!
At 35 years old, my generation might be the last one "to get" the Duke. He is an American icon that has been lost on the mispent youth of America. My late wife, God bless her, hated westerns like no woman I ever knew. Then one Saturday morning, AMC showed McClintock. I had to coax her to watch, telling her that it was not a typical western. After about 10 minutes, I couldn't pry her away. That first time she laughed till she cried. I think she was as surprised at the depth of the characters as well as the humor. Anyway, she still hated westerns, but whenever McClintock came on, whatever was that day, stopped, until McClintock was over. At last I had a John Wayne picture I could share with her, making it my favorite, and I believe John Wayne's finest acting performances.
Favorite John Wayne movie? Always a tough question trying to narrow it to one specific movie. My first exposure to the Duke was The War Wagon when I was a kid, since then I try to watch as many as possible.I think my favorite is Rio Grande, but all the Dukes movies western,non-western are good.I dont know whether John Wayne had alot to do with who he cast in his movies but it seems he also worked with alot of people who enjoyed working with him and working peticular types of movies, and working with Mr. Wayne. Thank you John Wayne for all you have done.
John Wayne is an icon because he made movies that the whole family could see, which is more than you can say for movies today. Searchers is my favorite, but all his westerns are the best & favorites of mine. HE IS THE BEST ACTOR OF ALL TIME!!!
LOVE HIM & STILL MISS HIM
Your list is way too short. I forced myself to pick one of those shown and came up with Rio Bravo - as enjoyable a movie regardless of genre. Another was Tall In the Saddle - highly underrated.
He is and still is the Best. Western or military
I think my favorite John Wayne movies were Chism, McClintock, The Cowboys & Big Jake. In these movies he was an icon that had values that you stood behind what you believed in and didn't back down for nothing or nobody. There was a sense of pride and direction in his movies, something we don't see in movies or actors today. He didn't just take a job to act in a movie, he became that charactor. He was a true American with morals and honor. He is missed but his legecy lives on in his movies. He really didn't have a bad one. We have boys at the ages of 11 & 15 and they are big John Wayne fans. May his legecy live on and may we live as the Americans he thought we should be.
John Wayne is and always has been the quintessential American hero, the one man all the rest of us wanted to be like - for more than half a century. I agree with many that you couldn't narrow his best work down to one film, or even two. But for the sake of your poll, I'll say that The Shootist and Big Jake are his best westerns, and In Harm's Way his best non western. For at least 3 generations of boys to men, he'll always be one of a kind. Marion Morrison of Iowa became The Duke for all time . . .
When i was ten years old my mother took me to see The coyboys. It was rather gruesome to see the Duke get killed. But after that i was hooked. John Wayne became a awesome figure in my life. I went to see the funniest western which was sincerly inspiring in True grit, which he won the long awaited oscar. I cant pinpoint a specific movie that is his best. Sands of Iwo Jima comes to mind as a hard as nails seargant. He was truly a role model of an unselfish strongminded individual. I have a bumper sticker that says GOD BLESS JOHN WAYNE on my truck. What can i say HE WAS MY HERO>>>>>>>
I am 41 and grew up watching John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Jimmy Stewart. My favorite John Wayne movie has to be "The Cowboys" which to my surprise did not make the list.
No other like the "DUKE"!
My favorite John Wayne movie is The Quiet Man, especially the chemistry between John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. However, I do not like the character he played in The Searchers; that character had an attitude and a chip on his shoulder.
The man never made a bad movie. It seemed that every role was written for him. My personal favorite was "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". When he told Jimmy Stewart to "Think back Pilgrim" what a great scene. So adaptable from Pittsburgh to In Harms Way I repeat the MAN NEVER made a bad movie.
My favorite John Wayne movie is "In harms
way". He never made a bad movie. Some
better than others. Barbara Walters interviewed him once and he was the same in "real life" as he is in movies. (except
he didn't hit her or shoot her). He was
and will always be the best my book.
Would have to agree with everyone here, it's really unfair to pick a "best" John Wayne movie.
I'll mention another one that has long been forgotten somehow....
"Donovan's Reef"
He had a flair for comedy and for action that is simply hard to quanity, he's a Man's man and the screen has rarely seen his equal.
kudos to all those mentioning "The Sons of Katie Elder", another one of his most underratedfilms.
The Duke is the best period and i like all his movies from stagecoach all the way through to the shootist.I can't pick a favorite all his movies give you a different piece of who he was and still make up him as a whole. But no matter what he was always the same john wayne. i'm 21 and in my opinion his type of character is something this generation sorely lacks; there wre none better than him back then and there are still none tha come close to him now.
I think that Mclintock was probably one of the best films with John Wayne and of course, his film wife, Maureen O'Hara. It is a classic, especially the fight at the mud slide pit and of course the ending with Wayne being handed something to give Maureen her overdue spanking.
John Wayne is simply the best actor who ever lived.
Where's "HONDO" ?
I loved John Wayne
I'm 69 years old and try to never miss his movies, loved them all!
We love John Wayne, hard to describe why---but we just love watching the guy.
John Wayne is the greatest cowboy of all time, no matter what age or generation. Everyone loves this great American hero.
"Searchers" is #1 Western ever. "Shane," #2. All the rest, way behind. Three "Godfathers" better than many on your Duke list.
John Wayne was the best by far from the earliest movies to his last he was very good in all he did. But if I had to pick a favorite it would be "The Quiet Man." It was so out of character for him and yet was so well done .
What a shame. We had to pick from your picks. For the most part Wayne was a hack, especially when he had input into direction. Ben Johnson would have been my pick. What about Sam Elliot, or Tom Selleck?
The best movie that John Wayne made was "Rio Bravo." In fact all of his movies are GREAT! There is not another actor like him and never will be. The westerns they make nowadays are not what you would call a Western.
I`ve watched John Wayne all my life and enjoy all the films he played in . My favorite is The Shepherd of the Hills. the Wake of the Red Witch is another non-western I enjoy along w/ They Were Expendable.
John Wayne is much more than an "actor". He has turned into a symbol of what is good about America. That , if you are true to your word and beliefs and are willing, even though you get banged around some , you will win in the end.
Just doesn`t quite seem like 30 years has gone by but , because he was much more than just and actor, we will have him for many years to come
A short comment about "AMC`s Classics " The movies that are shown as classics are that because of the way they were produced and the dialog in them . When AMC`s Censor goes to work on them , the movies are turned into cello taking up airtime. STOP CENSORING THE MOVIES !!
John Wayne along with Randolph Scott and Gary Cooper were real icons. When these three passed away we lost the true actors of all time. There was no swearing or taking there clothes off to act like there are today.
Upon reviewing the many other posts - many of which are insightful - I'm surprised "The Shootist" doesn't rise closer to the top. The Duke knew he was personally confronting cancer in real life while filming this rich and thoughful character of a dying breed facing his, and his contemporary's, final days. Can't watch it without a tear coming round.
The Duke was the quintescential american icon....full steam ahead (and i'm canadian). From his early days as Sandy the singing cowboy to his last the shootist; he grew in every role. The Searchers being his best, my favorites were Quiet Man/McLintock/Rio Bravo and Red River w'Monty Clift. He seemed as honest/brave/forthright on and off camera..there WILL NEVER BE another Duke
you're canadian fans LOVE YOU
My favorites
1. In Harms Way
2. The Quiet Man
3. Mclintock
John Wayne was unique and compelling because he is one of those magnetic screen presences that you get to know the second you see him in a movie, whether if anyone has been a long-time Duke fan or if they're watching Duke for the very first time in their lives. In every way possible, Mr. Wayne was as honest, real, and kind as they could come, not like all those tabloid magazines today that always talks about Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, or Britney Spears. Watching John Wayne in any movie today, whether it is a western or a crime drama, always brings a smile to my face! In fact, whatever I'm doing around that time I always put it on hold so I can sit back to 2 or more hours of classic Duke! Whenever I watch "The Shootist", the movie makes me want to cry deep down because not only was it Duke's final film, but I would like to think that he rode into the sunset one final time. He was a man of the American people, and he never treated anyone who was different than him with disrespect, no matter the color of their skin. Duke reminded me of my grandfather, who loved sitting down on the couch to watch a John Wayne western on TV. John Wayne was -- and still is -- a hero to myself and everybody! In conclusion, there's just one simple question: "What is America?" The answer is just two words: John Wayne!
John Wayne was "one of a kind"...NO ONE, AND I MEAN "NO ONE" will ever have the talent and character as he had...both on film and in real life...I'm surprised that some other films that John Wayne was famous for was not in the poll shown...."Green Beret" for one...or are we to sit back and forget the Vietnam Era of our history...The "Cowboys"...The "Sons of Katie Elder"......As for me, I will continue to view any and all of Wayne's films, as long as the Good Lord will keep breath in my body....Maybe today's actors and actresses could take a little lesson for John Wayne into today's world of film. I think if they did...we'd have a lot more film's to cherish for a long time...as we have in John Wayne's films...They are all CLASSICS...ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!!
The Searchers is the best western he made in my opinion. Hondo was also excellent and one of his earlier movies; of course, not mentioned here. True Grit was also excellent. Thanks for having this poll.
When you talk about great John Wayne movies how can you leave out Big Jake.
JOHN WAYNE is my most Favorite Actor and his movies are priceless! The Duke was honest, true and unforgettable! I love all his movies, have a DVD & VHS collection of his movies and also have some of his pictures hanging around my house. He is and will always be "THE DUKE"! You should have made your voting list longer, has you left out so many great movies of him, "Rooster Cogburn", "Big Jake" and "North to Alaska" to name a few. I chose True Grit, but I really do not have a favorite because THEY ARE ALL MY FAVORITES!
John Wayne had such an amazing body of work picking one film is very difficult. He was bigger than life on the screen and his box office appeal lasted for decades. He was also fiercely loyal to his friends and it showed in his films. If Hollywood had more people like John Wayne today it would be an infinitely better place. Thankfully we have a great library of films to remember the Duke by.
Personal Favorites:
The Searchers
True Grit
Sands of Iwo Jima
The Man who Shot Liberty Valance
Stagecoach
The Shootist
Anyone remember The Comancheros? I do, Monseur!
Gee, what film pict was used for this poll? Ethan Edwards in The Searchers, of course. Best Western ever produced. The Duke was the best. You could go on and on with all of his great fims, western and non. Being a fellow Iowan, I love his films with other Iowans. Seabees has at least 2 other Iowans. And then there's another Iowan who appeared with the Duke many times- Mose Harper (Hank Worden). Even less seen films are top notch (Sheperd of the Hills, Wings of Eagles, etc.)
