It’s hard to believe that 20 years have passed since The Untouchables became a hot, hit movie starring Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness, Sean Connery as Jim Malone and Robert DeNiro as Al Capone. (What a dream cast it was!) The great Patricia Clarkson as Catherine Ness was no slouch, either. 

They even signed erudite playwright David Mamet to write the script (no small feat since Mamet has had a longstanding love-hate relationship with

Hollywood).

The story of determined, untouchable lawman Eliot Ness versus the legendary bad guy bootlegger Al Capone indeed was an instant classic by the inimitable director Brian DiPalma, making $76 million at the box office.

Here are five things you may not have known about The Untouchables, which you can watch tomorrow on AMC at 8 p.m. in all its newly restored glory: 

1) It was based on a hit ABC-TV show from the late 50s starring Robert Stack and narrated by legendary newsman Walter Winchell. It lasted 118 episodes until its demise in 1963. The show spawned various books and toys before it ended.

2) It’s rumored that DeNiro, ever the perfectionist, tracked down the Al Capone’s original tailors to make his threads look oh-so-back-in-the-day.

3) Bob Hoskins was supposed to star as Al Capone. But when DeNiro agreed to sign on, Hoskins was reportedly paid two hundred grand to step down.

4) There was a video game based on the DiPalma movie for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

5) Ness was honored in the Tupac/Dr. Dre song, “California Love”:
