Maybe you can help me. AMC has these short, "back-to-the-program" commercials. Tehn only last a few seconds and appear right before the show/movie resumes. Well, there is a great electronica beat that is used in one of these short promos and I don't know what song it is. I have only heard it one other time at http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/137362/too-young.jhtml#id=1601812 . If you fast-forward this MTV show to the 6:42 you can hear the song I am talking about. I would love to know what song it is. Any help is appreciated

One thing I love about MAD MEN is that it seems to defy pigeonholing as far as genre goes...

How would you define it?

a). A dark or bleak comedy
b). A soap opera
c). A "perils of pauline" cliffhanger serial?
d). a psychodrama
e). a dream or surreal nightmare you had once
f). an earnest historical fiction
g). a fond exercise in nostalgia
h). a total shattering of nostalgia
i). erotica
j). a classic American drama
h). a mystery story
i). a horror story

Gee, I could go on! I think you'll agree that MAD MEN is any and all of these things. It defies genre. It even out-Lynches David Lynch, I'd say.

And yet, it happens all the time: Audrey Tautou fans are licking their wounds since the gamine Amelie star doesn't appear in Angels and Demons, the The Da Vinci Code sequel; meanwhile, Star Trek fans can't get enough of Zachary Quinto as the new Spock. For some actors at least, the second time's the charm. For those in the following top ten list, it sure is.
10. Don Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard: Iron Man 2 (2010)
It may be cheating a bit to include a sequel that won't see the light of day until 2010, but when it was announced that Don Cheadle would take over as Tony Stark's pal, it was the kiss-off heard 'round the world. Why the goodbye? Oscar winner Terrence Howard was rumored to have been difficult to deal with on set and overly demanding for his sequel salary. It's his loss too: master actor Cheadle is a sure bet to best Howard's unremarkable turn in the original.

9. Michelle Pfeiffer replaces Olivia Newton-John: Grease 2 (1982)
"Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee," Aussie pop star Olivia Newton-John crooned in the 1978 hit musical Grease. Not for long. The 1982 semi-sequel saw a very young Michelle Pffeifer stepping into Sandy's goody-two-shoes-gone-bad persona, playing Pink Lady Stephanie Zinone. More of a remake than a true sequel, Grease 2's also probably the only movie to have a future Oscar winner replacing a multiple Grammy winner.

8. Bryce Dallas Howard replaces Nicole Kidman: Manderlay (2005)
This one's tricky. In Lars von Trier's challenging, artsy flick Dogville (2003), the part of Grace Margaret Mulligan was played by Nicole Kidman. In the 2005 follow-up movie, Grace is assayed by a younger flame-haired actress, Bryce Dallas Howard. The substitution makes as much sense as anything else in these studiously artificial movies, but Bryce better not get too comfortable. Von Trier has said that in the third installation of his proposed American trilogy, Wasington, will star Kidman again.
Jason Lively stepped into the role for 1985's European trip, then was never heard from again. Roseanne star Johnny Galecki took over for 1989's Christmas with the family. Ethan Embry took on the role in 1997's Vegas Vacation, but shouldn't bet on being asked back.

6. Maria Bello replaces Rachel Weisz: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
Plucky Evelyn O'Connell endures a lot in the first two entries in the Mummy
franchise, so it wasn't that surprising when actress Rachel Weisz said
no thanks to a third return to the old tomb-and-gloom. Maria Bello, a
fine actress in her own right, gamely stepped into Weisz's vacated
spectator pumps and adopted her British accent. Too bad she was bested
by a lame "called out of retirement" plot and tired CGI effects -- thus her middling spot on this list.

5. of Oscar, winning Best Actress for her work as dogged FBI agent Clarice
Starling in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs.
So who can blame her for deciding to pass on the inevitable
sequel? Enter instead the fearless (four-time Oscar nominee) Julianne Moore. As
an older, more cynical Clarice, this alabaster-skinned redhead is tough
as nails (once again) and equally outhammed by her costar Anthony Hopkins.

4. Harrison Ford replaces Alec Baldwin: Clear and Present Danger (1994)
Let's face it. In The Hunt for Red October,
Alec Baldwin's Jack Ryan was a little nerdy. His technocrat played second fiddle to Sean Connery's scenery
chewing. Then Harrison Ford stepped into the role and out from behind
the desk, first in Patriot Games and then in Clear and Present Danger.
Ford's take on the Tom Clancy character kicks ass, yes, but it's his
conscience that lands him in fourth. (The less said about Ben Affleck
the better.)

3. Katie Holmes. After the ingenue landed the real-life role of Mrs. Tom

most recent Batman movie, The Dark Knight. Holmes had been singled out as the weak link in Batman Begins
(2005), failing to convince as either an idealistic attorney or Bruce
Wayne's love interest. The same could not be said of slinky Maggie

Christian Bale is quickly becoming the go-to guy when it comes
to sequel recasting, so it's no wonder he's number one on the list. Not content
with revitalizing the Batman brand by playing Bruce Wayne and his

four Terminator flicks. Only a couple of years older than the gifted but erratic original Connor, Edward Furlong, and his

star power to carry a Schwarzenegger-sized sequel on his shoulders.
Sure, you can employ a shaggy Wookiee -- if you can stand the smell. But what you really want is an artificial intelligence capable of flawlessly crunching and executing the necessary calculations. Of course, the dangers of such intelligence are all too clear: As the hapless astronauts aboard the Discovery One discovered when H.A.L. 9000 went loco in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture learned from the malevolent space cloud V'ger (née Voyager 6), NASA hardware has a tendency to evolve murderously.

Science fiction teaches us we need space probes that can evolve their thinking over the course of a mission, but keep their loyalty to their makers. And now, it looks like NASA's and the European Space Agency's probes will be programmed to do just that.

First, some background: NASA's Voyager probes use gravity assists to leapfrog between planetary bodies -- borrowing a planet's gravitational field to fling them to their next destination. The benefits are a significant savings in fuel, but the drawbacks come in the form of mathematical complications: Launch windows can be missed, mechanical failures can occur, and solar flares can knock probes off course. And when you consider the fact that the trajectories for such gravity assists must be plotted months or years ahead of time, the problem becomes staggering.

The solution, says Ian Carnelli of the European Space Agency, is to program space probes with evolving genetic algorithms, which would allow them to pilot themselves. A space probe's computer would constantly run simulated variations of the gravity assist maneuver, taking the most optimal simulated test runs and then "breeding" them with other test runs to calculate the planetary slingshot for any given circumstance.

The concept behind genetic algorithms is to create machines that can adapt to ever-changing circumstances the same way living creatures evolved over millions of years -- only in a much shorter time span. Engineer Christopher MacLeod at the Robert Gordon University in the UK has developed a neural network comprised of a series of processing nodes. The actions the robot takes to respond to various stimuli are shaped by adjusting the importance of the input signals to each node. If an action works, the combination is stored. If it fails, the robot compensates. But the real question is, now that the algorithms are being put to work in spacecraft, will robot evolution include a predilection towards singing "Daisy Bell"?

Murderous, singing AIs aside, the potential for evolving genetic algorithms is (forgive the pun) astronomical: Carnelli has already run successful simulations of missions to Mercury via a Venus slingshot, and to Pluto via Jupiter. But the scientist says an actual probe programmed with artificial intelligence is still far off: "We are far from the days when a probe will have its route calculated by a [genetic algorithm] on the fly," he says. "But we have gone a step closer."

Let's just hope that in taking a step closer to the stars with an evolved satellite, we're not also a step closer to having to send the Enterprise to go hunt it down.

Ah, the scent of mentholated salve in the air can only mean one thing: It's time for another dose of "I'm old and here to yell about how everything was better back in my day!" Case in point: The venerable and all-but-forgotten art of the tagline. They weren't all gems, but once upon a time taglines were seriously committed to getting our butts in the theater seats by promising lurid hyperviolence and sights best seen by the eyes of Satan himself.

I love the ones that draw me into the world of the film, that make it seem as if the killer is going to leap off the screen and kill me to death. Here are ten of my personal favorites: The ones that have stuck with me, the ones that frightened me and the ones that simply made me say "Ugh, I really gotta see that movie!"

In no particular order...

1. Last House on the Left: To avoid fainting, keep repeating "It's only a movie...It's only a movie..."

2. Alien: In space, no one can hear you scream.

3. The Fly: Be Afraid. Be very Afraid.

4. Night of the Creeps: The good news is your date is here. The bad news is...he's dead.

5. Dawn of the Dead: When there's no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth.

6. Maniac: I warned you not to go out tonight.

7. The Mutilator: By pick, by axe, by sword. Bye Bye!

8. The Prey: It's not human... and it's got an axe!

9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: Who will survive, and what will be left of them?

10. Abby: Abby doesn't need a man anymore... The Devil is her lover now!

Really, how could you not want to see Abby after reading that? It's a classic exploitation come on, and it works: The movie is begging to be witnessed!

Several of these films have been remade, and the efforts of today's marketing teams pale by comparison. Take, for example, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: Granted, the original boasts what just might be the greatest tagline in horror history and the remake would be hard pressed to top it. But "Inspired by a true story?" That's what constitutes a terrifying teaser in 2003? For shame! Or The Amityville Horror: The original ads screamed "For God's sake, get out!" Which of course meant, "For God's sake, I have to get in there now!" The 2005 remake: "Based on a true story." Oh, yeah, I'm positively wringing my hands with fearful anticipation.

It kinda feels like no one's really trying anymore. Attention spans are shorter, everyone is multitasking and taglines aren't going to make or break a movie, so who cares if they stink? They increasingly seem to have been crafted from magnetic poetry sets; just make sure to include a couple of standard words -- "evil," "face," "terror," "alive" -- and call it a day. Is some cranky old horror blogger going to reminisce years from now about how great it was to be hooked and reeled in by the tagline from The Fog (2005)? Probably not: "From the makers of Halloween" just doesn't have the staying power of, say, "Sometimes dead is better" (Pet Sematary). But that's life.

I've barely scratched the surface here, so look for more in a future column, along with at least one list of real stinkers. And share your favorites and unfavorites below -- there's nothing like a trip down someone else's memory lane.

A fan of horror movies and scary stuff, Stacie Ponder started her blog Final Girl so she'd have a platform from which she could tell everyone that, say, Friday the 13th, Part 2 rules. She leads a glamorous life, walking on the razor's edge of danger and intrigue.
