Walt's new assistant, Gale.
Ausiellofiles.ew.com reports:
"... David Costabile is joining the AMC drama as Walt's (Bryan Cranston) new assistant, Gale.
Described as an eager student and a brilliant chemist, Gale is the antithesis of Jessie (Aaron Paul) in that he's more interested in the magic of chemistry than getting rich.
Costabile's casting isn't necessarily confirmation that Jessie will go rogue in season 3. But given the mounting tension between mentor and protégé, it's certainly plausible"
..
.... So what does/will this do, to the dynamic that is Jessie and Walt? What will Skyler think of Walter's new "assistant?"
..and what will Hank have to say about the new, influence?

The writers can write what they want and it will probably be good, but Walt doesn't need somebody to be an assistant chemist and eager student, he needs somebody to link him to the streets. Somebody who will be tougher and more dependable than Jesse and somebody who will not scam him. Mr Chicken man would be a fool to deal with Walter now that he saw Walters picture on the cannister at the DEA office. So if this is the way that the writers are going they will need more than an assistant chemist.
The plot thickens! Vince and the gang always gee where we thought they'd haw (or something like that. lol). I don't think any of us came up with this development in our guesses about the third season.
I hope this will mean new and surprising
(mis)adventures for Jesse, Walt...AND the "new guy!
Hmmm. A second chemist. This could get REAL interesting.
Assuming that Walt will keep cooking in S3 (and that seems a pretty safe bet if he is getting an assistant), he is going to need a source for precursors now that he and Jesse used up all of their methylamine in their 4-day marathon cook session. Perhaps Gale will provide a business connection to purchase/divert the needed chemicals without the risk of another midnight break-in at the local chem supplier?
If Gale is truly interested in the "magic of chemistry", I can't see him being content cooking meth for that long, though. Methamphetamine is a very simple/boring synthesis as far as organic chem goes, and wouldn't hold the interest of someone more interested in the chemistry than getting rich. Somebody like that would naturally be drawn to more challenging projects (like the total synthesis of LSD, perhaps?), or even inventing completely new compounds ala Shulgin.
Wouldn't it be interesting if Gale was actually an employee of "Grey Matter Technologies"? Could make for some interesting future story development...
Well this will really liven things up. I've always felt that Jesse was an accident waiting to happen due to his continued Drug usage. Walt has been pretty understanding putting with Jesse's antics, but there has to be a time where Walt says enough. Will Jesse get kicked to the curb by Walt or eased out of the picture with the arrival of this new character? I can see a bit of a possible Rivalry brewing between Jesse and "The new guy".
With the addition of Gale, Jesse really does become completely redundant, doesn't he?
Jesse's dubious street connections aren't needed anymore, assuming that Gus stays in place handling distribution. Jesse wasn't all that helpful as a source of supplies/precursors, and he was only a half-assed lab assistant. And he soaked up half the profits, while exposing the operation to outside risks (like his junkie girlfriend).
Yeah, there could be some real friction between Jesse and Gale this season. And since Jesse is capable of snitching out the whole operation in a heartbeat, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes if Walt, Gus, or Saul decide that he has to be severed from the partnership....
Wow, was surprised to see this news. Jesse is one of the reasons why I love the show so much. I hope they don't kill him off or do anything bad to him, but I can see that happening since he would probably narc out the entire operation to everyone if he got cut out. Although, he has like 500 grand and may be content with that if he is clean.
Jessie has some real power over Walt. Walt murdered two people. Jessies criminal exposure could be reduced to lessor charges like aiding and abetting, conspiracy, etc. Jesse would make a better witness against Walt than Walt would against Jesse. This is an intresting scenario in that Walt had better tread litely in dealing with Jesse. Gale may be a good chemist but Jesse holds a couple of cards. If Jesse plays his cards wrong though, he could get whacked. Sorry ladies.
Well, there's always the possible of whackage for ANYBODY on this show, but I do think this season will give the actors a very juicy storyline to sink their teeth into. And if Jesse is killed at the end of the upcoming season, it will pack a HUGE emotional wallop. (And maybe finally bring Aaron Paul that Emmy we've been predicting)!
Aw, I was so pleased with myself over my fearless predictions and coining the phrase "possibility of whackage" that I typed it wrong. LOL.
If Jesse has to go, then Gale will have to be the one to do it.
If this new character has all the required talents that Walt would like in an able "Assistant". Then Jesse does become redundant. As Jesse is still in Recovery and maybe trying to clean up, I could see where this type of Betrayal from Walt might just drive Jesse into a Drug induced Death spiral and put the last nail in his coffin. Jesse is pron to being pretty emotional and when confronted with a challenge that he does not want to deal with, turns to drugs and that Happy place.
If this Gale guy is so good at chemistry, what reasons would he have to manufacture narcotics? Seems like something is going to have to happen in order for that to take hold.
Also, if this guy really knows his chemistry, they should cook everything under the sun and really break bad. Screw meth, there is a lot more money in other drugs...
This is too funny!!!

That clip is awesome, bullieboi!
If Gale is a good chemist, then they should be able to make any kind of precursers they need, or branch out and make any number of designer drugs.
They don't need a street guy anymore if they are going to sell in bulk to Gus. Gus will keep them on a short leash though, now that he knows about Hank. I still think he will use that knowledge to his advantage and force Walt to keep tabs on Hank for him.
with out the same motivation walt had to become a Meth cook Gale should not join Walt. Jesse Has had his short comings which sometimes were brought on by Walts impatience with the how things can go wrong on the street. For instance Walt hounded jesse not to leave the keys on the work table because they might get lost, That led to the keys being left in the ignition for 3 days burning out the Battery. Walt also could not understand breakage forcing Jesse into a bad situation during peekaboo. The worst mistake Jesse made because of Walts impatience was when he had his dealers push into a new territory. Walt does not need a chemist he needs some one that can handle the sale end of things.
Gus will probably try to kill Walt and Jesse since he is a cautious guy. either way Gus will not be buying anymore meth from Walt.
b
I am with the "Kevin o scenario"...Gus will tire of the carelessness of both Walt and Jessie. And if you remember, Walt has made some pretty dangerous mistakes in the past, even though he does make the Blue Sky and Jessie has had his times of not being cautious too. After all, Gus is "Mr. Cautious" and can't afford to have too bungling stooges such as Walt and Jessie screw up his drug cartel. I have always had the thought Gus might contract a hit on both Walt and Jessie. Once Gus manages to get Walt's formula for Blue Sky, Walt is no longer needed and Gus never trusts " a druggie" either. Gus appears not only to be a cautious businessman, but a perfectionist as well and any little mistake made by Jessie or Walt seems to magnify before Gus's eye.
Another thought that Gus manages to get an assistant to Walt's drug making after he rids himself of Jessie. The new assistant learns the formula of Blue Sky and Gus eliminates Walt. If that happens, then the Season might be over...who would take the place of Walt and Jessie and make the series this great? The infamous duo makes the series. Any thoughts on this
Lindas555: I doubt Gus will have Gus killed. Gus is a real businessman, he would continue to do business with Walt in order to make more money. Also, Walt's formula for meth is irrelevant, anyone can cook it.
With regards to "little mistakes", they already have made mistakes and Gus still did the deal, I doubt little mistakes matter since Jesse isn't dealing with Gus.
They won't kill Walt off until the show is over and I don't see that happening this season.
sorry for the double posting, everyone...having trouble with the web site a little.
If you remember awhile back, the purest meth was made by Walt's formula for BlueSky. No one else had made such a combination. Possibly Gus could have hired a chemist to figure the formula, but Walt was the genius to come up with his own concoction of Blue Sky. It's like anything else when new to the market, there will be others to make it better later on. If "anyone" could make BlueSky, then why wasn't it made before Walt?
I rephrase my last posting concerning Walt and Jessie's mistakes. I sense they are new to the marketing of meth, i.e.. BlueSky, and make mistakes along the way to get it out on the street. Walt and Jessie have not perfected the method as to how they distribute their meth. Gus, on the other hand, has perfected his drug cartel to a success with minimum mistakes. Possibly in the beginning, Gus made his mistakes to make his drug business to what it has become, but can't afford any foolish mistakes now.
Agreed, yo!
Plus Gus just found out in the Season 2 finale, that Walt is the brother-in-law of a big shot at the DEA.
Demoting Jessie and taking on a new assistant might prove to be counterproductive to Walt. After all, Jessie pretty much knows all about "Mr. White", the quiet unsuspecting" Chemistry teacher" and can "rat" Walt out to authorities and plea bargain a lesser sentence from the DEA for himself. We are not so sure Jessie might come clean after spending time in Spa-Land that he might "rat" on Walt IF Jessie finds out Walt allowed Jane to die without even trying to save her. Jessie has some damaging info on Walt, such as the killing of crazy-8 that gives Jessie an "edge" and give him substantial leverage against Walt. Walt has to be cautious with Jessie at this point by introducing a new assistant into the equation. Introducing the new assistant could adversely affect the "Chemistry" between Walt and Jessie.
David Costabile is a great actor! He played Detective Rick Messer on Damages, but he was killed off in the second season finale. He's perfect at playing a creepy guy. He was also on The Wire on HBO, as well as the T-Mobile commercial where he played a single dad with three daughters who were asking him about his Internet dating. I can't wait to see him on BB!!!

Sorry for the triple post. It wouldn't show up for me.
