Apt Pupil
Anyone remember this crazy old story by Stephen King? It's a novella that was published in "Different Seasons" in 1982, and then it was made into a movie in 1998. It's one of his non-supernatural stories, so it's more of a thriller/drama instead of a horror story. In the movie, the old man is played by the same guy who played Gandalf in Lord of the Rings.
It's one of my favorites, and I just realized how many similarities there are in its basic plot compared to that of Breaking Bad. It's almost uncanny, albeit "Apt Pupil" is quite a bit darker in tone. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this.
The story has two central characters, a young boy and an old man, who develop a very unusual and sordid relationship, due to shared criminal activities that they are forced to help each other conceal from both the authorities and family members alike.
One of the characters, the boy in this case, starts out as an innocent who becomes terribly misguided and then spins an elaborate web of lies to keep his parents and teachers from discovering his misdeeds in order to maintain his façade of benevolence, while the old man lives alone, under an alias, and is only concerned about the authorities discovering his crimes. Also, the boy is the one who initially approaches the old man and blackmails him into forming a sort of partnership so that he can use the old man to get what he wants. But eventually the old man gains the upper hand and winds up controlling him instead.
The story is essentially about this young boy who winds up "breaking bad" in the worst possible way, becoming a total monster in the end. This comes about due to his dark dealings with the old man, who starts out as the lead antagonist, but winds up becoming more of a victim of the boy as the story progresses, at least until the tables get turned again.
There's even a scene in which the old man impersonates the boy's grandfather to help the boy keep their secrets safe, and it also has some moments of black comedy.
Anyway, I highly recommend it, but I prefer the written story to the movie version.

Yeah, that story was definately way ahead of its time...'course, that's par for the course, with ANY King novel!!
I remember reading it, while in jr. high...but, that was in the mid-70's. (Oops! Just gave my age away!! =\ LOL)
Clowns really CREEP me out...*shudders*
Ugh!! So, "It" ranks high on my favorites, of his!
Then again, "Dream-Catcher" is another favorite.
Gotta love Duddits!
I agree any stephen king novel is great, unlike only about 1/4 the movies made of his novels were any good. I think "The Shawshank Redemption" also adapted from the novella "Different Season" titled "Rita Hayworth And Shawshank Redemption" is the best of all the movie adaptations of his. Jesse didn't start out innocent though. I have read all of SK's work that has been published. Other great adaptations of his work are: The Shining (Jack Nicholson, enough said); The Dead Zone (Christopher Walken, creepy); Stand By Me (great cast of kids that became stars); Misery (Kathy Bates, demented fan); The Dark Half (Timothy Hutton, haunting duel personality); Thinner (curse of the gypsy spell); Apt Pupil (mentioned above); The Green Mile (death row magic); Storm Of The Century (written to be a movie - powerful); Dreamcatcher (mentioned above - keep that toilet seat down); Secret Window (Johnny Depp - great split personality); Kingdom Hospital (TV series - funny); and 1408 (John Cusack - great special effects). A few more are good but most all of the rest are real stinkers
Hank and stormsiren, were you aware that most of Stephan King's writings were taken from his dreams?? Also, Stephan King highly recommended "Breaking Bad" as a new hit series.
Hank
{{Jesse didn't start out innocent though.}}
Yeah, Jesse wasn't who I was referring to in that case, it was Walt. I think that Todd's story has a lot in common with his, even though he's the younger one in the scenario, and his motives are much less pure to start with. Dussander's role is, oddly enough, more similar to Jesse's I think, even though he's the old man; he's the unwilling enabler in the beginning, he's the one who gets used, but eventually he becomes like a mentor to the boy.
It's like many aspects of the relationship are reversed, so it's not a perfect match up by any stretch of the imagination, but there are several parts of the story that share a very similar tone IMO. Particularly when Todd tells his lies to his parents to keep up the appearance that he's like any parent's dream child when really he's the complete opposite, and they buy it so readily because he's become so good at hiding his true nature that they couldn't even imagine him being anything else than what he's made them believe for so long.
So there's a lot of suspense created by the thought of how they would react to finding out the truth because you know it would be so utterly devastating to them. I get that same kind of feeling while watching the scenes of Breaking Bad when Walt is lying to Skyler.
I also really enjoyed The Shawshank Redemption, IT, and The Green Mile. Stephen King is pure awesome. Among my favorites by him tough is a much lesser-known short story called "Uncle Otto's Truck" that was published in Skeleton Crew, as well as the novella "The Sun Dog" that was published in Four Past Midnight, which also contains "The Langoliers".
Linda,
I didn't know that Stephen King had recommended Breaking Bad, but that's great to know :)
They just showed Apt Pupil on the TV I think.
Anyway I posted a new tune on the Jesse v Walt killing thread. I'm copying it to here since this is a new one. Mine relate's to Willard. I thought it was time for a new tune.
Well in the midst of all of these wondrous posts, I've composed a new parody of lyrics for next season. In honor of Michael Jackson's death and one of my favorite tunes sung by him. Willard was one of my favorite horror movies. Anyway to the tune of Ben. Gus sings this song to Walt. Perhaps in a dream musical sequence.
Walt, the two of us need look no more.
We, both found what we were looking for
With a chef to call my own
You'll never be alone
And you my teach will see
You've got a pimp in me
Walt, you're always running here and there
You feel you're not wanted anywhere
If you ever look behind and need a hind to screw.
There's something you should know
You'll always have a HO.
I'll make sure there's a HO.
I used to say,
I and me,
Now its us,
But always me.
If you forget,
That big fact,
I'll eat your kids.
That is that!
Walt, your family has turned you away,
They don't matter that much anyway,
They don't know me like you do!
They'ed better not try too.
You know that I'll kill them,
Being an alpha Rat like Ben.
Gus, the boss who'll eat you too.
So there ya'll have it for a saturday night.
An Ode to Michael Jackson? That's just precious. Get a life...
R.W., I do have a life. This was not an ode to MJ. It was a parody on song lyrics. Some of us have been doing this throughout this season of BB. I did a previous one to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies. I think James26 did one and someone else did another one. I just do it because I love music, lyrics and all sorts of stuff. Don't you have a sense of humor? I spose you would say since I listen to Flatt and Skruggs that I'm a low down hillbilly with 2 cars that work sort of and 3 up on cinder blocks in my front yard that I know I can fix, but in the meantime thar gonna remain for sparh parts to sell until I full well decide to get to them! Well, Bless Your Heart Darlin. God told me too, bless your heart that is. Now god also told me to take my shoes off, set a spell in front of my computer and Be there for you. Good thing when god speaks to a little ole gal like me, my athiesm kicks in and decides which cocktail would be better, Hennesy, or my XXX jug of rhumatiz medicine? Been awhile since I broke into that jug. Penz on which Hienz 57 gene is workin on my weary, middle aged bones.
So RW, being sure that you have a way better life than me, just remember to accept that sum of weeyan's ain't as smart as you. Be kind to us. I know its a cross you'll have to bear threw out your totally eggsalted eggsistanse. I'm sure I meant to put a bearing cross in there somewhere, but geewhizz, I gotta take one now. I wonder if I can remember where the outhouse is?
Tweeds
Remind me to chek with my future contractor to put a bidet in the next outhouse I build.
*Sigh*
I found out, the hard way...a bidet & a drinking fountain are two very different things. =P
Hah. Just kidding. ;)
LMAO, about keeping the toilet seat down, Hank Jr! =D
And, thanks for reminding me, about "The Green Mile"...definately one I can watch over & over again!
R.W. needs to get a sense of humour??? Last time I looked...he already had one. *shrugs* Did he lose his??? =\
Whatever the case...He's NOT getting mine, if he needs another one! Ha ha ha!!!
diksee - Not to worry my sense of Humor is intact, it remains whole. I'm just bummed that I will never be able to accept another cup of coffee from a Weasel again. Ha, Ha, Ha, Acccccck...
Season 3 - Walt gives Gus some advice. "Never trust a Weasel".
Oh and the same applies to Junior Senators from Chicago that play Basketball and who were once Community Organizers that go around chanting "Yes we can".
My oh my! Now I get it RW. You must be into ex vp's who go around chanting to the pentagon, it's my way or the highway! Unless you're my dyke daughter, then you're the apple of my eye. As a matter of fact I love gay's, so that make's me a positive conservative. After all there are lots of gay's in our party with lots of money. They are the bomb, don't ya know. Larry Craig what a guy. He's backed and backed into me all of the way. I love that guy. And that guy from Florida who sent all of those emails to young male pages. Those liberals who just don't understand me. I only did what I did cause I had too. Now this new jr. senetor who got into the presidensy, (not a proper pres yet mind you) I don't like him. But I do appreciate that he's not locked me up yet and is letting me talk all over the place. Letting the whole world debate my crimes in a forum fashion. He's givin me so much to look forward to now that I can speak in front of everyone on every single media outlet that will pay me to say my piece. Some I don't even get paid for. After all I have a very good 401k with stock in Haliburton. To the tune of 500 mill a year. I loved being the behind the scenes pres. All those soldiers who died, I don't even know if its over 5000 yet. They were in the equasions of what needed to be. And those hundred thousand plus soldiers who are disabled vets will just have to get over themselves and their sposed physical and mental problems. After all, so many in the past have. They've turned out okay. Ya know the stat's are wrong as to how many homeless vets are out there from the vietnam war. The one's who've survived and managed with the vet system and hospitals by being so bitchy about their various physical and mental problems have done well overall just by being bitchy. They get their healthcare for free afterall.
Dear RW, and everyone else, I'm a community organizer. Yes I drink coffee, cocktails, smoke pot on occasion, and have in the past done about every drug around. I'm proud and loud. I'm very glad that RW found his hoodie and Hank jr. reads Stephen King and is a repected poster on this site. I respect everyone here, I know I've Tuco'd on occasion, but when I have I've never put anyone down nor ever said GTFO to anyone, go to the nearest phamacy to get my meds. So if RW's point has been to get a reaction out of me for not responding in the past to his posts, he's succeeded. I'm not that hardened to where I don't take personal insults to heart on public talk forums. Its just the way I'm made. I'm the oldest kid on both side's of my family. I speak my mind. I take on bully's bigtime, whether they be cyber or physical. Its in my nature to fiercly (fiersly?) protect everyone's right to write. I also recomend that if you don't like my posts, don't read them and skip over them. You can see my avatar. I encourage everyone to write and keep on writing. But know that if you personally attack my posts, I'm gonna write back or not. Depends on the slight and whether I'm awake. Yeesh, all of you have some good stuff that make's my eye's go cockeyed sometime's. But I love that.
Sincerely,
Tweeds
R.W.:
I, as well as many others, appreciate & love, the snarkastic quality of your posts! So, it puzzled me, for Tweeds to question your sense of humour.
There's no need, for any of us, to try & get in a battle of wits, with R.W....we'd all lose, like a one-legged man, in an ass-kicking contest!!! =D
BTW...Sorry about the coffee, it won't happen again! Will you forgive me?? My halo kinda slipped. 0 =) Hah ha!
Yeah, right! I know...WHAT halo? ;)
Wait...
What??? =\
Tweeds I'm trying to understand, where you're coming from...but...dang, you're making it awfully hard to follow. =(
Sorry, gal, but your last post, just comes across sounding like Charlie Browns' teacher...
"Wah wah, wha wha wah waa..."
BTW, Tweeds...I'm was'nt trying to be mean, by my last post...but, seriously, you've totally lost me.
What exactly is the point you're trying to make, by that first paragraph?
Wow diksee, we must have been posting at the same time, for a moment I thought that my post would have been posted 3 time's.
Anyway, RW, came out and said that I needed to get a life for posting my song parody of Ben. We'll I didn't let that one fly without posting my outhouse post. When I started a new thread about song parodie's, Hank jr posted a what I took as a very derogatory GTFO on my thread. Afterall he's a respected poster here, a major reader of Stephen King. Song parody's? GTFO I checked the urban dictionary just to make sure what he meant. It wasn't good. So having been cyber bullied in the past, and loving this site, I had to say my peace.
Or put my two cents in, so to speak. Here I was trying to lighten things up with a parody, got beyond nailed down because of it. So, there you have it. Go to my thread, and tell me what you think. I know I've used some BB language, and said dolts, but it was all in fun. I have never told anyone to get off of a site because of their opinions.
Tweeds
Yes...Tweeds I've been reading...and, will drop my "Forum Village Idiot Persona" long enough to say:
From what I gather, R.W. was'nt talking about your song parody so much, but, more about this line...
Quote by: tweeders1 on July 12, 2009 1:13 AM
" In honor of Michael Jackson's death..."
While I realize, an ode is: "a poem written to a person or thing." In my loose translation of it, "In honor of" might as well be, "an ode to."
So, I understand R.W. saying, what he did.
But, that's just IMHO. (In My Honest Opinion)
This forum, is formed of Breaking Bad fans...not, The Wonderful World of Disney, or Barney the Purple Dinosaur fans. (And, I don't mean that hatefully.)
You've got to realize, that with a show that depicts the darker side of life & it's problems...it's going to draw a group of people that understand that life, is NOT all sunshine, lollipops & rainbows...so, they're not all going to post replies, just to conjole & please other people.
As far as Hank Jr. & his comment...maybe that had more to do with (again IMHO) the "over-kill" of you posting this same song, in three different threads??? =\ I dunno...
With the "cyber-bullying" you've experienced previously...all's I'm going to say, is:
Sometimes the people that present themselves, as the "Under Dogs" are'nt always such...there are those, whom tend to provoke other people.
I used to enjoy reading your posts...but here lately, you've changed & have become passive/aggressive, sometimes long-winded...without making any sense...continually bragged about yourself, and been condesending. (There are a couple more women here, that post the same way...so, you're not the only one.)
While I've refrained from mentioning my private life, in this forum...I would like to add, that until you've watched someone very close to you, go from a healthy 225+ lbs...to only 148, from terminal cancer...
And, seen the pain & suffering, they have to go through everyday...
Whining because some people, did'nt like your posts...seems very trivial.
Sorry. I don't mean to sound like I'm taking it out on you...
Just trying to put some things of life, in perspective.
diksee - Thank you, are are far from a Forum Village idiot. Oops, wait that did'nt exactly come out right. What I meant was, you have pretty much summed up where I'm coming from in your words. I think I can speak safely on behalf of Hank Jr. also, and say that we have a problem with honoring a person like Michael Jackson in song, parody or any other way! Leave that sort of thing off this site, which is dedicated to BREAKING BAD. Its just the way we Guys are wired. I personally have a problem with seeing Michael Jackson as anything other than a Child Molesting Freak in my humble opinion. He might have been a talented entertainer at one point in his life, but that does not erase all the bizzaro crap that this person was involved in. Michael Jackson is not the kind of person who deserves or needs to be honored, once again that's my opinion. I could go further into that, buts whats the point, enough said. Now on what Tweeds wrote in her unhinged Liberal diatribe, I think I will leave that alone other than to say, what she wrote pretty much sums up what she is all about. I do not usually go and explain myself to strangers, but felt this needed to be said for the record. Now on that coffee issue diksee, all is forgiven. I like that old school saying, "what does not kill you makes you stronger". Now I'd like to return to my Village Idiot persona if there are no objections.
LMAO...wait!!! I object!!!
I meant that, I was the Village Idiot!!! Not you, R.W.!!
Thanks for your forgiveness, about the coffee catastrophe! ;)
"What does not kill you makes you stronger"...
LOL, is'nt that the Kilz Primer slogan??? ha ha
Well, I'm a middle aged punk! Just like Bryan Cranston according to his quote on the commentary of the first season dvd that I just played on my new blu ray player. I did in a way worship MJ, since we were the same age growing up. Apparently RW nor Hank jr. has never seen the movie Willard. Its one of the campiest horrer movies of all time. Its about a rat named Ben. Who's the alpha rat of all time. MJ sang it when he was 13, I was 13 too, Long before he became the strange being that he wound up as. I never worshipped him, but I sure had a very big crush on him in my youth. What he did with children in later life is still to be debated. Do I think he acted inappropriatly with kids? Ya know, I don't know. When it first came out that he was sleeping with children at age 30 to 45, I too immediatly thought child molestor. But then as more things came out, nothing was black and white. He grew up in a culture that we have no way of understanding. I could get into more detail of my thoughts on that, but I won't on this thread.
But what I will get into is people on this forum. Apparently some have not read throughout all of the posts one all of the threads of this season like me and others. Many of us have gotten into our ownlives for topics of conversation. TruBlue admitted that he or she had their essential other commit suicide, Skottey addmitted that he had lots of pain and drugs, a few others addmitted that they were unemployed and getting less that equitable paying jobs to pay the bills. Healthcare, forget that in this country unless you're employed. So we got personall with each other. That's why we like this site. We can all write and relate to each other. Withen and without about this show. Afterall, this show reflects everyone on hardtime's, goodtime's and its most definatly political. It reflects society as it is here in the United States, no matter the state you live in, or the state of being mentally your at. Pissed cause you lost your job, happy cause you have one, sad cause someone you grew up with died, your school lost funding, you can't get into a school cause the funding ain't there, your insurance don't cover nothing...
But you still have access through the internet to express yourself. Many through 1 hour increments at the public library. There are many teacher's who know these things. By teacher's I mean folks who are actual teacher's in the public school system along with parents, aunts, uncle's, cousins what have you. To say this site only belongs to those who wish to comment on this show and nothing else would make it boring and irrelevent. After all, if it weren't for us continueing to tell about our live's, the books we read, the music we listen to,where would the show get new idea's for how the show should continue? This is an open site. In my arrogant opionion, it should stay that way. Granted I only got a BB baseball cap as compared to a hoodie in the mail from Clayton. But I truly do respect everyone's posts here. I would even respect it if Dick Cheney posted to this forum. Shit, I would love it if Dick would post. I'd be the first one to perhaps leak it to the media. Of course, amc would have the advantage of that. So if RW or Hank jr wish to keep this site strictly to their restricted perameters of just what they think this site is, its not going to happen. Isn't that what the Greymatters site is? Much more restricted as to how short posts are? You have to post to only a particular topic? And, makes it hard to find the topic that you originally posted to? Like I said, I'm a middle aged punk. I prefer to read what everyone has to say, regaurdless. So cut and paste away everyone from every thread. I can't do it, cause I need new glasses. I'm one of the lucky one's who've been re-employed with health, vision and dental insurance. Yes, I was in securieties and banking. Now I'm in 401K's. On the tech side. Something completely new to me. I mean "F@#$%ckin" completely new. I will never,EVER,EVER,EVER be pissed at a propeller head IT peep again!!!! They are my new BESTEST FRIEND'S IN THE ENTIRE WORLD! Good thing I can bake some mean p-nut butter chocolate chip sugar cookies. I know how to bribe proper.

I think Bryan Cranston is going for the record for television scenes in his underware. Not to say that he is not a great actor.
I am sure the writers of breaking bad have all read Apt pupil and may have had some inspiration when writting this show. It is hard not to find simular shows books or stories for any show just about every scenario has been done. And all good writers have done a lot of reading.
And as I mentioned to RockMamma, another great author is Janet Evonovich. Her Stephenie Plum series is the best. She has some of the funniest grossest scene's in all of her books. Including but not limited to garbage, dumpsters, crap of all all sorts from all sorts of animals. There's always a high end car that gets trashed in the most hidious of way's. No car chase's there. Also, the heroine really gets trash and crap all over her. The character's are actually people that we've all met or encountered in one form or another. Plus they are a quick read. I don't know if any of the writer's have read her stuff, but I wouldn't doubt it.
As for Bryan, he's a fabulous actor, but he's certainly got that white boy FLAT ASS!!!! Almost a negative to the FLAT! Barely no cheeks to nibble on, should one choose too. Butt hilarious, nonetheless. The vacant inward dimps of said ass. Now as for the front? Can't tell really. I know how meat can be transformed with the proper motion.
