Walt makes BlueSky as "compensation" for those who betrayed him and this is ethical. True or False?
***( compensation----a psychological mechanism by which feelings of inferiority, frustration, or failure in one field are counterbalanced by achievement in another)
Walt is addicted to making Blue Sky because he missed his "golden opportunity." He didn't pursue his ideas and theories, but Gretchen and her husband DID carry out those ideas and look at the lifestyle they acquired! Walt, years later compensates his failure by making the purest Meth called BlueSky and reveals WALT was the genius after all and in Walt's mind, it's payback to those who betrayed him. Morally correct or not, he has cured the question who was the real genius.
My answer is True.

Linduh, "Its payback to those who betrayed him"? - So just how do imagine that he he is getting Payback? How is making Meth getting back at Gretchen and Hubby or anyone else for that matter? - You might want to rethink this one!
Is there an in-between answer?
While I can see what you're getting at, Linda, the original reason why Walt started making meth was because he had cancer and needed money. I think there are some feelings of inadequacy from years past and perhaps those are surfacing and making him feel he has to compensate.
Walt is a complex guy. He definitely has issues and I think he is aware (witness the first flashback while cleaning up after the bathtub crashes through the ceiling) of some failing on his part. He is proud (talks all the time about how "pure" his product is), but I'm not sure he is quite to the point of believing he is getting back at the world. Maybe that will come up in season 3.
The chemical process they use, it would have been yellow in real life not blue... they do that on purpose. In real life it would be Vanilla Sky not Blue Sky.
Guess I should have made it multiple choice, Dr K. and yes there can be an in-between-answer. I would love to hear what your answer would be.
Vanilla Sky just doesn't sound as exciting as BlueSky ...even though it's a technically correct color of vanilla...BlueSky sounds more dramatic.
Silent, you must have been a Chemistry major in school! :)))
Ha ha - Not exactly a major... just remember bits and pieces...
Linda, what ever drugs you're on I want some! Did you even watch season one of Breaking Bad or are you just getting it mixed up with Mad Men. DRKellogg has it right. This is your first really off the wall out of this world long strange trip your on answer that I've read from you. Re-watch the first season over again and get yourself back on track LOL.
ETHICIAL !!!
Walt isn’t hurting the people he’s feels wronged by , he’s cooking Meth that will be used to destroy , directly and indirectly , thousands of lives. If this is ethical then would it not be ethical for a Teen to go shot up an entire school because a few bullies or teachers dis’d him ? In both situation a person is destroying third parties lives because of feeling dis’d by others !
No , Walt’s behavior is not ethical .
Appears I didn't word this correctly and the only one that understood my intent was Dr. K. Thank you Dr. K for your insight.
Yes, Walt originally made meth to acquire money for his cancer treatments. I will rephrase my question as ," Do you believe Walt, after paying for his treatments, getting money for the family in case of his demise, later on, felt the need to compensate for his missed opportunities. Making the purest Meth, Walt realized his unused talent, and now aware he was the genius he could have been, had he continued down the path as Gretchen and her husband.
Quoting Dr. K....."I think there are some feelings of inadequacy from years past and perhaps those are surfacing and making him feel he has to compensate."
btw. Hank...I don't watch Mad Men because it reminds me of a daytime soap opera.
And don't do drugs...I never inhaled in the 1960's!! LOL
Linduh - You are grasping, but keep trying you might eventually get it right?
Linda - yes, I do think that Walt is taking pride in his latest accomplishement... How could you not be proud of being the best at something?
...and that probably does make him feel better about his crappy career choices and everything... but there is also some regret about the concequences of his actions...
I think for the time being, at least, Walt is done. He's made a huge deal and his dreams have been surpassed. FOR THE MOMENT. He would like to quit, I believe, but depending on what happens next season, he may not be able to.
He's found a pretty lucrative way to pay for what he thought were his needs, but at what cost? His wife wants to kick him out of the house. Jesse is out of the picture temporarily and perhaps, when he's back on his feet, he'll need to figure out some way to survive. It's all up in the air right now.
Going back to the original question, I'm going to say that Walt enjoys the cat and mouse game even more than making the meth. After all, there are a lot of frustrations and logistic troubles involved in cooking, but a huge amount of jollies to be had by duping the DEA and playing Hank as the fool. I guess that means I would say 75% false and 25% true.
I like your thinking Dr. K....well said for the question I had in mind and think you have the correct approach.
