What if Jesse and Walt "switch" by end of series?
Wouldn't it be a wild "what if" --- if Jesse and Walt were to , over the course of the series, switch roles?
Now when this started, Jesse was basically a slacker. He had a home provided by his aunt and he basically didn't have much of a post high school "life"
Walt on the other hand, had a "life" complete with a career and family and home. All up until the moment that he found out he was going to die.
I have a feeling that over the next 3 seasons (if all goes well) that Jesse will do what is needed to get an additional education of some kind and HE will become the teacher of the next generation (or maybe at the very least, he'll join a rehab program AS an experienced ex-user and "teach" others like him the horror of the path they are on and how to break free from it-- so in a way he could be a teacher that way too)
So basically I think that if the writers are headed in that direction that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel- overall-
On the other hand this guess of mine could be wrong. Who knows? We'll have to wait and see. But it should be a hell of a ride.

No, I don't think so there tuttle300. You're talking about upsetting the whole chemistry (no pun intended) of this show, and the writers in their right minds will never do that. You would have to change the name of this show to "Breaking Good", and that is not what this is about. In essence, your indicating that Jesse is gonna do a complete turnaround in his life, and Walt is gonna become a junkie skulking aimlessly about town without a care in the world? Not gonna happen.
bigfreakinnaz - I concur with your above statement. `Jesse might have an Epiphany or life altering moment at some point in the future, but its a stretch to believe that a guy like Walter White would become a destitute loser. No, I don't think so either...
Actually, I can envision that Jesse will evolve in the direction of a normal life.
I don't think Walt's future or end will be anything but bad because of his activities, but also his terrible character flaws. He's missing a few key qualities that kind of doom him - commonsense, foresight, acceptance, self-love, confidence, and I'm not very sure Walt really has alot of empathy or compassion for others who are not family.
Even though Jesse and Walt share many of the same personality flaws, overall, Jesse seems to have more of a heart, and a more developed sense of empathy and compassion, I think. I feel that is Jesse's saving grace, and may prevent him from going down the rabbit hole. But, in the end, Jesse will have to have a pretty healthy confidence and maturity to do it which would mean rejecting Walt and valuing his own life over Walt's or Walt's agenda.
I think the outcome you've suggested is possible, and that's what I'm hoping for in a series finale, too.
Mainly, I feel that way because at 50, Walt's had his shot. He's now choosing his end.
Jesse is 22-23? He still deserves his shot, and hopefully he will be able to live, and live after this experience, I'm hoping.
Jesse is an innocent. He's not vindictive like Walt is, he's not harboring any grudges like Walt is. He's also not as smart as Walt is. Even his street smarts are limited. He was taken down by Spooge and Skank for christ sake because he couldn't shoot them. Walt could have. He keeps Walt in check. He's the only part left of Walts conscience.
An interesting proposition, tuttle300. And I think it's worth consideration as a valid possibility.
Even though, like jamm54 says, Walt has a screw loose, I still sort of think he'll slide by on his past reputation. There are certain people in his life who are not ever going to be convinced he's completely evil or capable of the things he's already done. Think about it...if you didn't know what's happened, would you ever believe the mild-mannered chemistry teacher could behave this way?
But I'm straying from the point. We want Walt to totally shift his paradigm. He's pretty close already, wouldn't you say?
In the case of Jesse, there's still a lot of wiggle room. Don't forget that he did shoot Tuco! He's basically been a punk for most of his life, albeit on a small scale. I have to admit that for the first season, I wasn't a big Jesse fan. I didn't hate him, but I thought he was an annoying character...somebody that kind of kept Walt down through his ineptness.
Jesse busted out of the box from the first episode of the second season. He's shown a lot of growth, not just in his ability to stand up to Walt, but also in his various relationships. He's faced being kicked out of his home, turning into the Blowfish, dealing with the Spooge family and becoming Jane's lover. Through it all, as Walt at times appears to lose his humanity, Jesse has gained his.
I can't wait to see how it all turns out.
It's the day Jesse truly understands the depth of Walt's coldness or lack of empathy, and knows how deeply flawed Walt is that there's going to be hell to pay.
Right now, Jesse has commented throughout the second season on Walt's coldness, but it's like he really doesn't quite see how awful it is.
The final straw may be a couple seasons off, but it may be when Jesse discovers that Walt let Jane die, that Jesse will throw Walt off his life. Jesse will bond closer to Walt as Walt tries to help Jesse get clean, but if the whole sequence of events the day Jane died is ever revealed to Jesse, I think he will reject Walt completely, and divorce him from his life.
Do you think that'll happen jamm54? Consider this: Okay, Walt says nothing to Jesse that he was there that night and watched her die. Time goes on well into next season (or maybe beyond), the whole situation with Jane dying from an overdose in his own bed serves as a huge wake-up call to Jesse, and he gets his life totally turned around, but is still in business with Walt. Life is going great for him, then one day out of the blue, Walt says to him "Hey Jesse, something I gotta tell ya...." - Do you think Jesse will really tell Walt to get lost? Or do you think he might realize that he's LIVING and leading a better life without her?
bigfreakinnaz It wouldn't happen quite that way bfn. Walt will slip up in a conversation that will reveal his presence there that night. The same way he's slipped up with Skyler. It will be an innocent slip that lets Jesse know he was there, never a direct confession. But once Jesse's tipped off, no, he won't let it go. How could he? He loved Jane. He'll feel a mixture of revenge (for her death) and rage (for Walt letting him suffer thinking he's responsible for her death - which he will feel, knowing Jesse).
It also may depend on when Jesse discovers this information, and what kind of person he is at that point - it may not. Jesse was struggling with his loyalties at the door when Walt came with the money. Between his love for Jane and his feelings for Walt - you could see it on his face. At that point, Jane was very forceful and running Jesse and the show.
If Jesse is healthy, mature, self-confident enough to not be completely dependent on Walt emotionally for validation and love, I think even more so, Jesse will be enraged and want to avenge Jane. He won't feel obligated or needful of Walt's approval or feel loyalty. Jesse will have forgotten about how Jane behaved that day, and will only see that Walt killed her, and let him suffer. I would think that would be his first emotional response because Jesse did love her, I believe, and he believes that.
Put it this way - if you (Jesse) believed yourself to have loved someone (Jane), and you found out the person (Walt) who let her die was also someone you loved, even if they told you they did it for your survival, how would you feel? I think even with those factors, Jesse would want to kill Walt or at the very least reject him completely.
Okay jamm54! Good points made! But I think Walt probably knows all this pertaining to his feelings towards her and everything you mentioned. He also knows that he pretty much had nobody to love, and nobody loved him anymore(such as his parents). He will be very careful on what he says to Jesse about Jane's death, if he ever says anything.
