Season 1 Episode 6 - Open Thread

Talk about Episode 6, "Crazy Handful of Nothin'."

If Breaking Bad is, as Vince Gilligan says, the story of how Mr. Chips becomes Scarface, then tonight we said hello to his little friend. Up until now, Walt's digressions -- and granted, there have been many -- have seemed more like quick lapses in judgment rather than changes in his personality.

But tonight, almost before our eyes, we saw Walt shed one persona and adopt a new one altogether. It's not just the bald head I'm talking about, though it did serve as a nice metaphor as well as make Walt look, to quote Walter, Jr., "Bad-ass." All of a sudden Walt became almost an entirely different person with a renewed sense of determination, focus, and decisiveness. In that very last scene where he's clutching handfuls of cash in victory, we see that despite his death sentence, he truly feels alive for the first time.

I don't think that he'll be "Scarface" from now on -- he still has a family who he loves and a home to protect. The challenge for him now will be to integrate this new person into the Walt everyone knows and loves. But I think that at the very least, he will no longer be afraid to get his hands dirty, and he's certainly not the same character that began the episode lecturing Jesse about keeping the "business" side of their operation away.

What did you guys think of tonight's episode?

OMG I loved tonights episode, best yet.I will be waiting on the edge of my seat till next week like I have since the premier.

default userpic

Thank you AMC. I haven't missed an episode yet. Absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This show plays out like an epic movie, I can't wait to know what happens next.

default userpic

Amazing episode. By far the best so far. We all know he doesn't have testicular cancer because he just showed he still has those. By the way the previews look for the next episode, we'll be in for another treat. I'm going to go to work everyday this week just so the week goes by faster.

default userpic

almost forgot, does anybody know how many episodes this is going to run for? I hope it's like, 96.

default userpic

@ballsdeep: Next week is the season finale. No word yet on the second season, but we're all waiting with bated breath for news!

default userpic

Great new series!!!! I cant wait for another week to see what is going to happen. Its something new and has action and drama that keeps you wanting more. After next weeks final episode for the season, when will it start again?

default userpic

That was Brutal. I hate most T.V. accept for Adult Swim and the occasional movie. Breaking Bad is the best show since Deadwood.

default userpic

Whats that, 6-7 episodes?!? Totally disappointed that it couldn't be longer, but it has definatly been worth every minute. I too will be waiting anxiously on word of season two.

user-pic

When Jesse tells Walt that his aunt didnt live many months after chemo, his frustrations reaches a boiling point. He got treatment for his family at his expense and against his wishes. Now he's taking risks, like with Tuco because he has nothing to lose.He wishes dying was so easy but it is out of his control, like everything else; except "cooking".And notice Jesse's parents werent called while in hospital.Walt & Jesse only have each other.

default userpic

We cant use a distributor you killed him, lol. This is not Meth, lol. Funny stuff guys! Shame next week is the finale I could watch at least a hundred more! This show, the plot, the actors and Vince all rock!

default userpic

Eagerly awaiting the next episode. Walter is the truth and should do well in the "business". Certainly this is on for the 2nd season???!!!

user-pic

This show makes me keep wanting to watch it and definitly keeps you on edge. It's one of the few shows now I look forward to watching every Sunday before the long week begins. :) I have no idea how they're going to tie up all the "loose ends" in the finale. It seems like there's so much to cover!

user-pic

I DVR'd this episode just so I could go back and watch every scene again. Magnificent acting from start to finish.
I'm a Breast Cancer patient in my 30s and the Chemo scenes were so realistic. The red liquid is Adriamycin that causes the wicked side effects.

This show deserves many seasons to come...and I wish this first season had more episodes.

Tell the AMC big-wigs that if they cancel Breaking Bad and my cancer kills me, I'm coming back to haunt them!

default userpic

Best show on television, hands down!!
It's COOKING (literally & figuratively)

This episode was excellent! It will be a shame if the series doesn't continue after this season. Please keep it on the air AMC!

default userpic

WOW! I didnt think I could love this series anymore than I did until I saw this episode. Fantastic job. Mr. White is OG. Cant wait til next week. AMC has to continue the series.

user-pic

can we just give Bryan Cranston the Emmy now? Wow! Amazing episode with one helluva climactic ending. Walt is now a bona fide drug dealing gangster and has stepped over into the point of no return.

One thing that does make me wonder about the realism of the show is how he is able to procure all the pseudophedrine to make that much meth? you can't go to Walgreens these days and buy a bottle of nyquil without showing ID, much less the amounts of pseudo needed to cook pounds of meth. I know that Vince wants us to use our imaginations but throw me a bone.

Also there is no way that Jesse and Tuco do that bump of meth without grounding it down into powder before taking that snort? Inhaling a rock that big would make you gag like crazy and puke inside of two minutes.

default userpic

They'll keep this show going, I'm sure Vince Gilligan has an out if AMC 86's S02. Every network is drooling to land a smash. I'm under the impression that Vince is "one man banding" as writer and director and able to sercumvent the "whinny" writers strike or maybe that's what's making this a 7 episode season. S02 is coming one way or another. By keeping it small and and obtainable, AMC will be getting Soprano ratings by S03's end. Everyone I know that I can get to watch it wants more. A show about meth and just as addictive, BRILLIANT!

default userpic

THIS SHOW R0CKZ!!! I have watched it from episode 1 up. Tonight's episode was the sh1t! I can't wait to see the finale. I tell everyone about it, and now my mother even watches it. Btw, she loves it too! The writing is elite and the characters are amazing! This by far the best thing on TV. Thank guys and keep em coming! :)

default userpic

HELL YEAH! I've been a huge fan since the first episode, but after tonight - I'm convinced this is a smash hit show! Bryan Cranston, umm hmm, can you say Emmy? I have no doubts this show will be back by the way it's popularity is skyrocketing by the episode! But if for some insane reason it doesn't return for more....I vow to NEVER tune in to AMC again! Love it!

user-pic

My anxiety level zoomed up to 90 tonight! I haven't missed an episode, and I feel sorry for both Walt and Jesse. And geez, poor Hugo

I do wish Skyler weren't so clueless and selfish, though. I can't believe Walt has managed to maintain in the face of all this stress with her and all of his crushing burdens. But as it was sugggested, I agree that tonight was a turning point. Maybe Walt has shed his previous self and acquired this new persona.

Neither can I believe what a short season this first one was--I figure it was a test run to see how the show would do--but I'm COUNTING ON IT COMING BACK! You can see we all love the series. Absolutely excellent TV. Thanks AMC!

default userpic

WOW!!!! I'm adicted to Breaking Bad...Tony Soprano didn't have the underlying Hard streak Walt seems to pocess....
Walt is a cointoss that is able to flip & shows he has the Kohonas when it counts....Very protective of what hes trying to acomplish! A mother hen don't have shit on Walt!....
Shows hes not to be screwed with
Now I am disheartened that the series is only 7 episodes long & I think we're all going to suffer withdraul pains till season 2 starts........
I live in Canada & I missed the 4th but thanks to
www.ovguide.com I was able to see it there!
Note to Vince : Your righting has some of the most surprizing styles I seen todate!.Very subtle details come out
at the right times to add compilled interest to the story line!
Like when Hank told Walt about the "Snitch"
You took a mild manored white bread charactor & turned him in to a force not to be reconed with!
But at the same time you show the vulerability of the man where Walt gets back to his truck & lets go of his emotions......very little in hollywood today puts realistic scripting in to the story.eg: unforgiven where little Bill gets the righter to point the pistol then tells him to pull the trigger.............Thats THE LINE TO CROSS!
Walt seems able to CROSS THE LINE.But shows its price to be paid!...
I look forward to this show all week long.&....Long I do!
PS could you guys at AMC list tunes played on this show!.Curious about a couple of tracks!.Thanks!
God Made Weed ....Man Made Booze...
Who Do You Trust!

user-pic

Y'all are seriously wicked. And teases! Harumph!!

I'm going to have to watch this one again, because I'm sure I missed some stuff, but wow!

Is Albuquerque really so big that somebody wouldn't put a tail on that Aztek? It seems to show up in some questionable areas, know what I'm saying?

Thanks for sending us out with a bang...literally. And we're getting another bang next week too, from the sound of things. ;) I can't tell you how much I appreciate that!

Gotta say I am LOVING this show. I wasn't sure when I first saw the ads for it whether it was going to be my cup of tea, but it has rocked my world. Walter White is my new hero simply due to the fact that, in the face of death, he has come alive.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the show was actually slated for nine episodes but was cut down to seven by the dreaded Writer's Strike. Hopefully, we'll get a full second season.

default userpic

Some1 was asking how long this show will go?

I think the writer himself vince even tells us.

40 episodes

Watch some mini clips where they talk to the writers, and stars of the show. And vince himself will say "Over the course of 40 episodes"

I say 4 seasons per year so maybe one year and a quarter to watch the whole thing

default userpic

OMG; I love this show! I am hooked. I wait all week for it to come on. No one I know watches it so it is good to have people to talk to about it.
I was also wondering how Walt is getting the stuff he needs to make the meth? Especially if he is planning on giving Tuco 4 lbs. next week. In the sneak peek for next week's episode, I didn't understand Tuco's comment:, "Talk is talk. But owing me money, that's a problem!" Then he throws all those empty vials and a plastic bag at Walt. I don't get it. I may be naive, but wouldn't Tuco be the one owing Walt the money if he is giving him the meth to sell? Why was he so pissed?
You guys all make such great points-whoever said that Walt has no control over his life is so right. I guess being powerless does give him a certain sense of power; he's got nothing to lose. He can't even die the way he wants to. And while I can certainly symapthize with Skylar being pregnant and facing the loss of her husband, I do have to agree that she is being somewhat selfish. She is not even taking Walt's point of view into consideration when he discusses why he doesn't want to do the treatment. It's his body, right? He is probably going to end up dying anyway and being sick from chemo and radiation for his last days.
I can't believe next week's episode is the last.

default userpic

Me and my boyfriend love this show, last nights episode was the best to date, but it keeps getting better and better. IT MUST COME BACK FOR ANOTHER SEASON!

user-pic

As usual I loved the show but I was really wondering how come after chemotherapy Walt did not smoke pot. I had seen in some report that smoking weed after chemo makes you feel much less nauseated and helps people maintain weight.

I thought for sure that Hugo, in the washroom, was offering him a joint ... not a stupid stick of gum.

Anyway, I'm also angry that next week is the show season finale ... what kinda seasons you guy have in AMC TV land ??

Isn't 13 episodes the norm ??

I hope it comes back ... I'm hooked ...

default userpic

For those curious on how Walt come up with the pseudophedrine to manufacture the meth. Probably the same way he gets the masks and beakers and such - from the school. As a chemistry teacher, he has access to different chemicals and pseudo is not just found in cold medicine. Since the school and staff are oblivious to the missing masks and beakers, there probably just as oblivious to the missing chemicals.

default userpic

I don't know--sudo is kind of a controversial substance, so I can't imagine that High Schools would just have stockpiles of it, especially considering what a huge epidemic Meth is.

I would guess that Walt doesn't really know where the sudo comes from, and that procuring it is Jesse's business. As for how he's going to get enough of it to make four pounds? Ya got me...

default userpic

Excellent! If movies were this good, the Hollywood
"big wigs" would be rolling in it. This is much
better than 90% of the "big screen" movies
released last year. Where did you find the writers?
Give them a raise! Give your dp a raise too, it is
beautifully shot.
Bryan will need to make room on his mantel for
all the emmy's he'll receive from this.Major
kudo's!!
My only concern is the cancer. Jesse aunt was
gone in 7 months. How are the writers going to
deal with this? If Walt keeps going to chemo,
he'll just get sicker and sicker.
Best show of the year-way to go AMC!!

default userpic

@the old bag: Think of it this way. Lost is now in its fourth season, but they've only been on the island four months. You can stretch time as long as you need to keep a show going. That's at least what I'm hoping for.

user-pic

Two things. I am addicted to this show, it is amazing in every aspect but, I am VERY disappointed that the season has only lasted for 7 episodes. Pretty lame AMC. Also, anyone know why Walt is paying for his own treatments? I would have thought that a school teacher would have had a pretty good insurance plan. Did I miss something?

default userpic

@s2budd: In the pilot, Walt says to the paramedic that as a teacher, his insurance isn't great. I think this is one of Vince's commentaries on the show, which is the status of the American public schooling system. Later in the series, when Skyler says that she got him an appointment with the best cancer doc there is, he bucks because it's not covered by his insurance. She insists, thus he has to pay.

default userpic

Okay I finally had to join AMC to comment on this GREAT show. My first internship during my college days (getting a degree in chemistry) was at a analytical laboratory. We used sulfuric acid to clean some of the glassware what was coated in oils & PCBs. I can recall back then thinking... dang you could dissolve a body in this... when I saw that on the 2nd episode I just about fell off my chair-- in horror and in a dark demented way thinking-- well there you go, it works! and being the geek that I am of course as soon as Jesse said he used the tub I knew you'd hear it come crashing down... and it did!

The characters in this show are complex and intriguing.... why did the Skyler's sister steal those shoes??? there are all these little hints of future character development that I love. I love how when the family did the intervention when Walt finally appeared then his brother-in-law dived into the party tray... apparent that the women said you cannot eat the food until everyone is here... lovely little hints that the writers are paying attention to the details that separate mediocre drama from exceptional drama.

Last night's episode was no different, awesome, subtle, elegant, thoughtful writing .

Go Walt, you're a bad ass! and who said chemistry wasn't cool???!!

Fingers crossed for several more seasons!!

default userpic

Love this show too. If I'm not mistaken I thought Jesse told Walt he was the one getting the "pseudo' and he is supposed to cook.

I agree, if Bryan Cranston does not receive many accolades for this series, than the nominations are very much skewed. I thought his "talking to the pillow" speech was emmy worthy.

Personally, I think Skylar and Walt Jr. are both selfish. He can't even die the way he wants. I cannot believe next week is the finale. When will we know if AMC picks it up for another season? I love Mad Men but Breaking Bad is beyond brilliant.

I am so glad to have this blog to read others comments and to add my own.

user-pic

Obviously they are getting the pseudo from somewhere. In the previous episode Jesse alluded to his friend that he had given up cooking because he was having a hard time getting the pseudo but his friend said not to worry because he had a connection. That being said, we all know how Jesse's partnership with his crossbow wielding, dingleberry of a friend ended out in the desert (by the way, is he still out there wandering around shooting at the havelina's?) In any case unless they heisted a crate of the stuff from a truck carrying the stuff to a drug store, it is almost impossible to get.

I know someone that used to hire 20 to 30 people, drop them all off in a minivan in a 30 mile radius in Palmdale and go store to store (CVS, Rite Aid, Thrifty's, Vons, Ralphs, etc, etc) and have them each buy 1 or 2 packages of the stuff to make and cook about 1 pound of meth) Since Jesse and Walt don't have that kind of resource where the hell are they getting the pseudo from?

And another gripe I have, since when does a pound of meth cost $35,000 dollars? Have prices gone up that much in the last 5 years? Holy crap!!

reposted from SatireV:

Spoiler warning

I guess Walt wasn't bluffing after all. At least not with Tuco.

We may know Walt's location or momentum, but never both at the same time. Hey Vince! You're revealing your X-Files roots!

As I waited for this weeks episode I was trying to predict what Vince would throw at us next. Betrayal by Skyler? Would we find out what happened to Krazy 8's body? Would Jesse find Marie buying glass? No nothing so pedestrian from Vince. Instead we get a total transformation of Walt. The red liquid oozing into his vein is the potion that helps him put on his disquise and changes into a super hero. I think Walt's costume will shape up just fine. But how can a meth cook be a super hero? He rains so much death and misery down on people with his magic crystals. But he is also a self loathing destroyer of those like him. It's a morality tale.... but one for the modern age. It's not black and white, its gray or a little cloudy.

the question now is: Who will die in the finale?

default userpic

This episode was just fantastic. It was Sopranos-good. I can't believe HBO would pass on this show, but I am so glad AMC picked it up.
As someone born and raised in Albuquerque, I must heartily applaud the incredible authenticity.
When my mother wanted my opinion of Walter, I told her, "he's gone Travis Bickle on us." Complete with shaved head.
I don't even know what to specifically talk about because the episode worked so well as a whole.

default userpic

My first reaction to Episode 6 was snorting over the fact that Walter -- post chemo and electric shaver -- looks A LOT more like his DEA bro-in-law. Eeesh.

I a distinct foreshadowing from the hospital room with Jesse in coma bandages ... to the close encounter with Tuco ... that Walter and Jesse are now uncomfortably bonded. Walter noted "$15,000 for my partner's pain and suffering" when he was making demands of Tuco (right before the fulminate mercury walk-in bomb). And, as someone noted above, it is Walter who shows at the hospital; not Jesse's distanced parents.

I guess I'm hoping that the Good Walter prevails at least with Jesse -- that he doesn't sell out Jesse; that he finds a way to "take the rap" or get his DEA brother-in-law off his and Jesse's backs. Some kind of deep mole set-up that makes his mouthy brother-in-law look good for cracking Operation Icebreaker ... but gets Walt and Jesse off the hook.

That's not ideal, by the way, cuz both need to compensate for the totally sh!tty decisions both have made. Community Service counseling meth addicts???

default userpic

I so absolutely withdraw my previous comment last week about no longer understanding or knowing what motivates Walt after he gets a second chance from the apparent escape from his meth mess as well as free med costs from his former budy. This episode was TOTALLY AWESOME and if Cranston doesn't get a Golden Globe for best acting off this ep its because Fed Ex lost the package sending the DVD to the judges. This guy is now Lex Luthor without a Superman to slow him down, the best all-American antihero character since Tony Soprano.

Bryan Cranston, you so totally rock. Mad props to you, dude, and the whole BB team. See you next week and next season. As long as you are on one side of the screen, I'll be on the other.

default userpic

This show is SO GOOD!!!! And this episode...oh my goodness! Walter has been content (all his life, it seems) to walk the sidelines, live in the safety of the "middle". But no longer. In this episode he found out, he has to be all in...he isn't the good guy just cooking a little meth to take care of a little matter while Jesse is some thug doing who knows what. NO. They are BOTH drug dealers. They are in this thing together. He's got to be active and involved, not going through the motions.

Opening with Jesse in a job interview and then smoking a joint with a guy in the alley and closing with a bald headed Walter, walking away with HIS money and letting Tuco know 'you don't get to mess with me and mine.' I cannot tell you how exhilirating this episdoe is!

Keep it coming...keep it coming...

default userpic

In response to an earlier post about Walt not smoking pot after chemo - remember, he has lung cancer. My first husband died of lung cancer 20 years ago and like Walt, his was also not caused by smoking. I made pot brownies for him since he couldn't inhale the smoke. Worked like a charm! This whole series is so authentic as far as the cancer, chemo and reaction to chemo goes. It's bringing back lots of painful memories but I love the show. This is the first I've heard that they might not renew for next year. I'll be emailing AMC!

default userpic

Another killer episode I really like the lex luther alter ego look, it really brings out his " im going to die anyway so what the F#$K attitude" and Tucko's character you hit the nail on the head with that hair trigger explosive aggressive personality with the schizophrenic nice cooperative side popping in every once in a while great touch very realistic in the meth world. I see a lot of complaints about the pseudo and how you ignore the fact that it's so hard to get it so maybe you ought to look at mexico since your not that far from it or cook up some oil the old school way with some phenyl acetic acid - acetic acid (anyhydrous) - sodium acetate. you should be able to find a 25 lb box of PAA collecting dust in the school's chemical storage (i did). and really 35k for a pound try 20k

default userpic

I think it was this episode -- the closing music--
" I wish that I was stoned."
Who is this? What is the song?
Sounds like Dylan.
