Flashback Scenes

Anyone care to expound on the significance of the flashbacks? I think since Walt wasn't in the classroom this week, the flashbacks are our window into his thoughts. He's remembering how he developed his ideas about chemistry and where he might have gone wrong.

The girl (potential girlfriend or an undergraduate he's trying lead astray...you decide?) asks him, "What about the soul?" And his reply that it's just chemistry. Was Walt flawed even then? Do we have to go farther back to find the real Walt?

OK, that's enough. If I think about this too long, I will have flashbacks!!

I think that like the quick shot of the Nobel Prize certificate from the Pilot episode, we're getting flashes of a life that could have been for Walt. We're seeing a time when he was passionate and alive, as opposed to just before his break when he'd become desensetized to emotion. I think scenes like this only heighten the tragedy of Walt's situation.

When Walter was flashing back to him and the student, I thought the girl was Skylar. She definitely looked like a younger version of Skylar. I hope the girl in the flashback is identified in a future episode. I'm betting it's his future wife!

It is amazing how young Walter looked in that flashback scene. The make-up people really are artists.

I think these scenes were among the first shot, because of Bryan's beard. Those glasses take up half his face and make him appear much older.
