I think the moment Walt starts "breaking bad" is the moment he sees all that meth money on the news during his brother-in-law's police raid. How could someone not see that kind of money as an opportunity to better their life?

FIRST POST! Whoohoo!

default userpic

Walt first started to break bad when he got the diagnosis. He knew he had to do something drastic, and he'd lost it at his second job already. The news story of the drug bust just gave him the method.

user-pic

Disagree-
Walter approaches his ex-student with the proposition..., work together or go to jail.
That's when he crossed the line.

Wait....! It was when he attacked those jerks harrassing his son!!! You could see in his face he went over to the dark side

default userpic

Walter White officially breaks bad when he flips out on his boss at the car wash for asking Walt to work outside again and help with the "wipe-downs."

default userpic

This show was great! Can't wait for more. As a former meth user it did not make me jones. Also a former pot smoker, but did'nt want to grow it or smoke it when i watched "saving grace". shows on prohibition don't make mewant to drink either. watching "big love" did'nt make me want to be in a marriage with other women!! get a grip nay sayers. there's always mayberry to tune to.

default userpic

He broke bad when he wasn't for filling his wifes needs. Sure he loves her but he's not lovin' her. He crossed the line when he desired to be selfish. He said to the camera later on that this was for the best intentions, but he was actually doing this all for himself and his mid-life, near death crisis.

default userpic

I think he started breaking bad when his boss ordered him to go do the job he was'nt hired to do. when the punks were making fun of his son he had already broken through.

default userpic

I think walter had his first feeling of breaking bad when his students at the car wash saw him washing the tires. Having them standing there laughing and mocking their chemistry teacher doing unskilled work must have sparked something in him. Maybe a feeling like whats the point of living like this? It seemed like from then on the gears started turning and he was awake.

default userpic

I think that he actually broke bad when he haw his ex student jump out of the window and realized that if a loser like that can make all that money with limited knowledge of chemistry... when he showed up at his house... thats when he brokebad...

user-pic

He started breaking on P-test day when trying to figure out how his health insurance could pay for the new kid and the current son. Then yet another doctor, and suddenly the concept of Bad has a new meaning.

user-pic

Walt forsees his family in a dire situation after his cancer diagnosis is delt to him. He is struggling financially and his son is not physically well. Is he breaking bad or breaking even ?

default userpic

Walter breaks bad when he first makes meth with Jesse.

A great show. Reminds me of "American Beauty" in that a middle age man has a meltdown epiphany, and he gives up all prior pretentions and politically correct behavior.

default userpic

I don't think Walt has broken bad yet I think we have to wait a few more episodes.

default userpic

Walter breaks bad when he first makes meth with Jesse.

default userpic

Walt breaks bad when he assaults the kid who was mocking his crippled son.

default userpic

Walter begins to Break Bad when he realizes that he has hit the big FIVE OH years old. The veggie bacon is a symbol of his tasteless, sanitized life. Thus he begins to Break Bad... and it's hilarious!

default userpic

Walter breaks bad when he makes the proposition to Cap' n Cook that they partner up or he'll turn him in. This is the first illegal thing to occur in his normal life.

default userpic

great show,

I dont think Walter "beaks bad" but more like he goes through a process of changes which are cause by all of the situations in his life. By combining his money troubles with his health and family situation it causes a chain reaction that changes him into a new person (very similar to the combination of different chemicals to obtain a explosive reaction).

user-pic

Walter begins to Break Bad when he sees the meth raid on the news and his son holding the gun. I think he really Breaks when he holds the gun to his head and pulls the trigger.

default userpic

The bad is broken begins when Walter is sitting alone in the chair outside throwing matches into the swimming pool. You can see him having an epiphany as he realizes that each match flame is really just another boring moment of his life.

default userpic

Walt broke bad when he told his Boss to F**K OFF and rattled the merchandise hanging on the wall while he stomped out of the shop.

default userpic

I think Walt broke bad when the kid in his chemistry class made a scene when he asked him to move back to his seat. It was just another straw to break the back of a long and pointless teaching carreer where those around him don't find chemistry nearly as interesting as he does.

user-pic

Walt broke bad when he stomped on the punk in the clothing store who was making fun of his son. The fact that he walked out the back at first tells me that he broke bad somewhere between leaving the store and coming back in to take care of matters in his own special way.

default userpic

IWalt is already breaking bad when the episode begins.Turning 50..fed up with his life..each time his students ignore him..each time his boss at the car wash insults and belittles him..it all gets worse. In episode one we watch as his disintegation grows..until by the end it seems complete. The facial expressions of his young partner in crime are perfect mirrors reflecting the wonderous horror of that disintegration .It seems impossible that he could possibly fall any further..but this is only episode one..he must have even further yet to fall.
Anyone who thinks that this show in any way glorifies anything to do with crystal meth has obviously not yet watched this first episode. An amazingly realistic depiction of the horrors of dealing in any way with this vicious destructive drug.. Congrats AMC for having the courage to air this remarkable new program!

user-pic

It was the scene were he was sitting by the pool watching the matches burn away between his fingertips before tossing them into the pool.

There was powerfull symbolism in the scene.
The fire burning away the wood was was a glimpse at how fragile his life had suddenly become...

...Tossing it away to the water his stand that he wouldn't simple fade - burn - away.

While huge events often shift who we are it is the quite moments alone where we see it for what it is that really changes things.

The point were Walter made the quiet solitary choice to go ahead and break bad.

default userpic

Actually, I am not able to draw a connection with the name of this show to the plot, so far its just all Good. however I do like the play on the periodical chart. and I am in love with the show - regardless of the of the name. I love these characters and the scenes. so genuinely realistic. I think its obvious Walt is not breaking bad, at least not yet.

user-pic

Walter definately is breaking bad when he sees his former student leaping out the window. He's like, ok, that's it. I am not leaving my family behind with nothing. If this kid can make all this cash, so can I!

user-pic

He Broke defending his son. the rest was, non violent up to that time, JP borden

user-pic

He Broke defending his son. the rest was, non violent up to that time, JP borden

user-pic

It was the first violence in the store when they were teasing his kid.

default userpic

I think his break-down started coming on in the classroom and escalated in the car wash and with the diagnosis of cancer he went full-blown.

default userpic

I'd say walter broke bad at car wash, when told to wipe down cars and he just wasn't going to live in his mundane life for the rest of the time he had left.

user-pic

Walter begins to "Break Bad" on the last scene of the last episode of "Malcolm in the Middle" when Malcolm and his brothers finally move away from home and Hal (Walter) and Lois are looking forward to their future when Lois comes out of the bathroom with a positive pregnancy test... I know, I know, but wouldn't that make a person "break bad"? I still LOVE Hal! But on with the new- Must be when he "stomps" the punks that were mocking his son and they never even saw what was coming! And when he actually commits murder when showing how to make "his" meth to the two criminal drug dealers in the RV.

default userpic

So does the miniature Winnebago come with a mini-chemistry set and a mini-meth lab?!
Sign me up!!

default userpic

He broke bad as soon as he attacked the guy making fun of his son at the store. Not only did he stomp on the guy's leg but he taunted him and embarassed him infront of his friends who just stood there and watched

The point of no return had to be when he gased the two in the rv and made his confessional before his attempted suicide

user-pic

I think the sign he was breaking bad was in the start of episode at breakfast. He had no control of his life, there was someone at every turn telling him what to do,from his wife to his boss. And he got no respect from anyone, especially his students. And then to see his yahoo brother-in-law at the party who was on "the right side of the law" under -scored the fact that that living right all of Walt's years got him absolutely nowhere.

default userpic

This is simple. The first time he breaks bad is when he takes the supplies he needs from the school chem lab. Up to that point there was talk, but this is the first actual illegal act done with the intent to do more.

user-pic

so did anyone win a free model winnebago?????????

default userpic

Yes, we're announcing winners every week. The contest has moved to the main blog (We're now in the fourth week). Here's the link:

default userpic

Walt's already slowly losing it in each episode. I think he'll go over the deep end in about episode 6, possibly 7.

default userpic

Walt broke bad when he looked in the trash can and saw the missing piece of the plate that broke in the basement where the drug dealer was chained to the pole.....Then he did what he thought he had to do .....Up until then it had been pretty clean, or at least he could rationalize it......

default userpic

Haha I think the model is a pretty funny idea... and i hope i get picked haha... i love this show and can not wait for next season!

default userpic

I THINK COOL MR.WHITE STARTS B?REAKING BAD WHEN HE STARTS RAKING IN THE BUCKS ,STARTS TO BECOME A BIG KING PIN,AND HIS CANCER GOES IN REMMISION,O YEAH HIS SEX LIFE ROCKETS,WHERE IS MY WINNEBAGO?

default userpic

he hasn't yet.

default userpic

When Walt settled that black porkpie hat on his head and smoothed his hands over the brim, he officially broke bad. It was like he was crowning the new Walt, no more Mr. Nice Guy, no more mild-mannered school teacher. Walt was now officially "bad" and embracing it.

user-pic

When he finally killed the guy in the basement, he had to realize that there was no turning back. Ever. Or maybe when he pieced the plate together and realized it was kill or be killed. That day in the house/basement was the time.

default userpic

It happened when they messed with his son at the store.

default userpic

When he was with his brother-in-law on that bust.....

default userpic

It was the first violence in the store when they were teasing his kids.

user-pic

Walter will never truly break bad as long as he doesn't sample that meth!

default userpic

the fights in the store

default userpic

he broke bad from the very start

default userpic

yer born broke

default userpic

from the start

default userpic

I believe the real moment that Walt begins breaking bad is when he decides to start chemotherapy. He made it perfectly clear to the people that love him that he does not want to die weak and brittle from trying to save his life. He wants to die a man and enjoy the rest of his days, however long they may be. I think that he has a lot of pride that will not allow him to accept the offer of his friends to pay for his therapy & he decided ok, fine. I'll do it for you (his wife, son, unborn daughter) but if he's going to do it, he's going to do it his way & he will experience life while doing it. He will be strong & because he has already reconciled his impending death - he is not afraid. He is, rather, growing strength from his actions that defy everything he used to be. He is reborn in that moment & he is in the embryonic stage right now - it's just the beginning of him breaking bad.

default userpic

we need a new question

default userpic

he broke bad when he made crazy wild sex to his wife after he fought!

default userpic

I think the title Breaking bad is referring to Walter's life in general. He knows the end is near, and he's already had a rough life. I don't think he alone "broke bad"; I think everything broke bad around him as well. Breaking bad is an inside look at some of our country's problems, healthcare and drugs-kinda strange it's all in the same. I absolutely love this show cannot wait for the next season.

Until then, I'll remain,
Waiting for the next season.

default userpic

when he defended his son.

default userpic

how bout a new question?

default userpic

When he starts banging his pregnant wife in the Aztec!! just playing thats not bad its good for the baby!! plus you get some milk spraying all over the place i think he started breaking bad when he killed the fool in the basement big time go ROCKIES motherfuck3rs

default userpic

I still love when Walt is standing in his underpants holding the 357 gun on the road waiting for the cops. Great!

default userpic

Break Bad!! I am sure glad this series is continuing! I found it to be well written and directed with excellent acting. I an so looking forward to the second season.

user-pic

Walt doesn't give a *beep*. Cancer, no respect from his students, belittled by his brother in law, controling pregnant wife, little money and sees a way to use his knowledge to make a ton of money.

user-pic

" so be sure to check back for next week's question...." Where's the next question? Did I miss something?

user-pic

Walt first broke bad when he saw Jessie escape the drug raid and didn't say anything to Hank. Storming away from his car wash job and getting in the faces of the morons who ridiculed his son were just understandable reactions to bad situations. Letting Jessie escape so that he could partner up with him was when Walt deliberately started down the 'bad' path.

user-pic

Seeing the money from Hank's bust was just a small seed being planted.

Getting the Diagnosis of how long he had to live was that seed getting watered and then toying with the idea of going on the ride-a-long.

Getting to go inside and see "how easy" the set-up was was the seed starting to grow.

Seeing Jesse climb out the window was that seed reaching for the surface.

But tracking Jesse down and putting the screws to him about Walt's plan to team up, he had already Broke Bad.

So somewhere between him seeing Jesse jump out of the window and approaching Jesse with his plan was where Walt decided this was something that could be done and that he could do it with Jesse's help and he Broke Bad.

user-pic

The moment he "Breaks Bad" is after he blows up Tuco's hq......when he gets in his car, grabs handfuls of money from the bag......smells it and lets out a gutteral scream of victory.......I've always thought of that as THE moment he Broke Bad!

default userpic

Walter begins to break bad when he asks Hank about the quantity of drug money found during a typical drug bust in episode 1. While not technically a bad act, it reveals a bankrupt morality which shows intent to stray from the safe path later down the line.

What is great about Walter is that he is a complicated character. He commits a lot of bad acts, but most involve some element of justice. An example of this bad@$$ justice is Walter's assault on the bully in the store...that kid totally deserved the ass kicking that he received. I was so proud of him.

default userpic

Walter has'nt broke "Bad" yet. He has been warming up to a point when he will break bad and it will literally be a bad break. I guess that he will find himself up against it when it will look like it is the end of his desperate rope- the lowest point of all. There is still bottom to be slithered upon and when that happens, when all hope is lost - that is when Walter will use his ingenuity, his inner gumption and everything he has learned in the street and life and he will "Break Bad" like we have not seen hence. That will also be the point when he will rise above every obstacle prior and will find the solution to much of what he has been seeking in that climactic moment with that one symbolic act of brilliance. We'll have a new pee eye em pee on the block. He will finally define his swagger.

default userpic

When Walt sees Jesse running from the crime scene and doesn't tell Hank, he's crosses the line into Breaking Bad. He goes from being a law abiding citizen to an accessory to a drug dealer.

Up until then, he was exploring a picaresque fantasy, there was no harm in it. That was the first step on the road to Hell.

default userpic

i think it was when he dropped that fulmonated mercury on tuco and the boys. He was previously being bad in small doses, but when he went to confront Tuco...he was Breaking Bad. Going right into the lions den, not caring about the fact that he might not even get to succesfully pull of his little "tweak of chemistry" trick, they could've beaten him to death at first sight....the look in his eyes as he got in the car, and drove away was a look that showed he was down in it, and he finally for a change felt powerful......

user-pic

Personally, I thought the moment Walt began breaking bad was when he was lighting matches then throwing them into his pool.

The entire scene was wonderfully done. When watching it a second time you know exactly what he's thinking. This is the moment he contemplates his current life situation, and decides that he's going to start cooking meth.

The throwing of the matches was him throwing his old life away.

default userpic

The moment Walt truly 'breaks bad'....no question about it, it is the scene where he tells off his boss at the car wash. Everything else ripples outward from that scene.

user-pic

Hell, Walt Broke on day one!

user-pic

When he goes up to Jesse after the family meeting and agreeing to the Chemo and says

Wanna cook? The look on Jesse's face (and Walt's for that matter) wow.......that is the begining of the end......truly for good ole "Walt" and the begining of Heisenberg........everything before then was him letting out his constantly swallowed anger (the car wash) Or him making a stupid mistake (The cooking at the beginning, and the aftermath with Emilio-Crazy8)

user-pic

when he stole supplies from his school

user-pic

Walt has a Breaking Bad Moment in every episode.
He has choices, and takes the low road everytime. Glaring example: He can let Gretchen pay for his treatment, but he continues on with the dark path.
He doesn't have to set fire to the annoying loudmouth idiot's car. He chooses the criminal act, not even associated with his attempt to provide for his family. That's a Bad Break. [And we all cheered at the idiot getting his comeuppance, How Bad are we?] Although his stomping on the punk who was making snide remarks about his son was a break from his schoolteacher personality, it was not necessarily bad, to be in defense of Family.

default userpic

i think the moment walt truly had a "Breaking Bad" moment was at the end of episode ten season two (5-10-09)where he is shopping for supplies to fix the house and sees a guy buying meth supplies...up until this point i always felt walt had a desire to do the right thing..even when he confonted the kid in the store..but then u cud see he was waiting in line and had a moment or change in his outlook on things where u felt him "turn" and then the confrontation in parking lot where he told them to get out of his territory...btw that song at the end was awesome! (tv on the radio=DLZ)

default userpic

I think Walt starts breaking bad right from the beginning, as soon as he gets the news about cancer.

user-pic

i think as soon as we think we see him 'breaking bad' the writers will come up with something even better so walt seems to get deeper and deeper into the troubled world of heavy drugs and dealing

user-pic

I think he moment when he breaks bad is when he walks off his rental car job...this is when thought turns into action.

default userpic

It happened when he let Jane die.

user-pic

I think it happened (in a smaller, quieter way) when he was screwed out of his part of the company Gretchen and her hubby started...when he first became aware that nice guys really do finish last.

default userpic

I think that he started to break when he took the teaching job, and gave up his dream job to support his family. He did it but held in his resentment for years. From that point on he started stuffing how he realy felt and never shaired or confronted anyone about his opinion. Although he is surrounded by people that love him, his anger has kept him detached and alone. In isolation the idea of becoming a drug dealer fit perfiectly in to his double life, since no one knew what he felt about the world. He never had the courage to do anything that would rock the boat till he found out he was dieing. He could get what he thought he was intitled to now because his death would prevent any real punishment. The resentment of giving up his dream and not face his fear of being rejected by his wife was the start of his downward spirial. One lie after another became a part of who he was.

default userpic

when he kills krazy 8 in season 1, by strangling him

default userpic

No way !!

I just seen this topic right now.

Walt, starts to break bad when he is in the car wash and the owner is telling him to go wash a car... then the kid from his class sees him... He was at that point getting ready to snap... Then finds out he has cancer right after... it happens quite quickly, the SNAP is when he takes it out on the car wash owner, smashes the display shelf and that is where he actually "Breaks Bad" as he tells off the owner and quits his job...

I know I am probably to late to win a Winebago, but can I visit the real one?

user-pic

Walt breaks bad when he starts cooking meth to get money for his treatment, Thats when its offical, after that he just keep on breaking bad!

default userpic

i think walt starts breaking bad when he man's up and kills crazy8 in the basement. it's all over but the cryin' from there.

default userpic

okay first of all eveready you obviously still have drug issues and your friends do too and since you cant handle seeing drug stuff even on tv just dont watch it and i think walt started breaking bad when he killed crazy eight as he had truely crossed the line than and he can never go back after something like that him cooking meth wasnt breaking bad he was doing what he had too to help his family hmm maybe just like killing crazy eight lol

default userpic

Walt began to "Break Bad" when he realized where he was in life and got sick of the system. His anticipation at using his skills to make and sell drugs was always in his mind, he just needed a kick start, the car wash owner gave him the kick start!!

default userpic

I would have to ague that Walt broke bad when everyone was over watching Hank's TV interview talking about the confiscations and seizures from their most recent raid. Walt saw the screenshot on the TV of all the money that was being bagged and tagged as evidence. Provoking him to speak up and ask Hank how much money was recovered at the crime scene. Hank replies "$700,000. Not a bad haul." Whether or not he would have started. At this point, the fact the Walt would even question his morals for money is evidence alone to suggest he had broke bad.

default userpic

I think its important to define the difference between what society considers 'bad' and what Walt considers 'bad'.
We watch this man as the world corners him and leaves him no other options. People who live a life of crime don't prefer that lifestyle but feel as though its the only option, a necessity. They don't consider it 'bad'. Walt's primary goal has always been to provide for his family. To him, this justifies the lies and deceit. When he murdered Crazy 8, it was because he knew that he couldn't trust him and that someone would want revenge. His actions and Tuco's headquarters was to obtain reparations for Jesse. All of these incidents were justified to Walt.

The one instance when Walt's actions were unjustified and he 'breaks bad' occurred in season 2 when Jesse's girlfriend choked on her own vomit and Walt could have saved her life but chose not to. He watched an innocent woman die and did nothing. We even witnessed his initial reaction in wanting to save her, and his secondary reaction in deciding against it. We even witness his guilt when Walt reaches out and finds Jesse in the crack house and then puts him up in rehab. This was the one thing that completely went against his moral groundings. We know this because he cried as he watched her die, but the 'bad' in him knew she was getting in the way of his money. It is at this point when the 'bad' overcame the 'good'.
