Breaking Bad

Q&A: Steven Michael Quezada (Gomez)

Steven Quesada breaking bad.jpg

For Steven Michael Quezada, the chances of surviving as a professional actor while living in Albuquerque were "zero to none." Here's how he went from breaking even to Breaking Bad.

Q: You went to school to be an actor but ended up making a living as a standup comic. How did that come about?

A: I started writing my own plays and I would sell out but after everything was said and done I'd break even. That's being successful. One of the plays I wrote was called The First Chicano President. This guy who is a comedy producer saw it and said "man you are so funny you should do stand up comedy." I told him he was crazy...After a couple years of starving I thought you know what, um, I'm gonna give it a shot. There was no turning back. I went right straight to headliner.

Q: How does a comic living in Albuquerque end up on Breaking Bad?

A: Now that we're Tamalewood, New Mexico is the hot spot. They came out and cast the pilot and when I walked in I guess I was exactly what Vince Gilligan was looking for because when I left he told them, "That's Gomez. I'm done with that." My family is so happy I'm not on the road and I'm home. I play a lot of golf with Dean Norris. How lucky can a guy be out here in the middle of nowhere?

Q: What's the most memorable moment from the show?

A: We actually trained with DEA agents out here.

Q: Did you go out on an actual drug bust?

A: No. These guys are in such danger as it is... Mad props to them because I wouldn't want to do that job. You don't know what's behind that door. I asked a guy what are you thinking when you bust into a house? He goes, "I'm thinking I want to go home to my wife and my kids. That's what I'm thinking."

Q: Gomez and Hank talk a lot of smack to each other. What's that about?

A: Gomez has been Hank's partner for many, many years. I don't see it as anything other than because we're buddies we can talk to each other like that. He calls Hank an asshole and a stupid white guy. I think you have to be a really good friend to call somebody an asshole 'cause if you're not my friend and you call me an asshole those are fighting words. You know and he just laughs it off so they are really good friends. He's always poking fun about Gomez being Latino. That's how partners mess with each other.

Q: What can we expect next from Agent Gomez?

A: They are on a trail right now and they really want to find who's cooking this meth. It's like 99.9% pure and that's just crazy. So they need to find this and Gomez, that's what he's going to do, he's going to hunt this down. What's going to get Walt first the cancer or us?

As an entertainer in Albuquerque, I've had the privilege of knowing and working with Steven Michael Quezada. When I first heard about Breaking Bad, I watched just to support Steve. I soon realized that this show was one of the best out there. I can't wait to see the season finale this Sunday. I'll be looking forward to see it coming back in the new season.

You are proof positive why we must never give up on our dreams. I am proud that you are my friend and that you've been the most positive influence for encouraging me in my own career as a stand-up comedienne. I love the show and watch with excited anticipation for the scenes that you are in. I pray that God continues to bless you and the "Breaking Bad" team for many years to come.

I'm hooked on Breaking Bad. It's been awhile since a tv series really grabbed my attention and I couldn't stand missing one episode. Steven is a great actor and he's super funny. New Mexico is very proud. I watched him at the NMHEA Award Shows and he was the most enterating host. I laughed so hard! And, I'm happy we are finally seeing more hispanics on tv.

Steven has talent. We all know that out here in New Mexico. Its time Hollywood recognizes! He CAN act AND entertain. The fact that he is latino means this man needs to stay working because he represents a very small field of latino entertainers in this industry. The Hispanic market is growwing faster than any other. This is why Steven Michael Quezada needs to be on TV and Film. Breaking Bad needs to survive. Its a very REAL show and Steven is part of the success. Buena suerte Steve!

This character reminds me so much of some of my homies played superbly by Mr. Quezada this show fills the space that the Sopranos of late occupied. Cranston is MY science teacher. Very entertaining the fastest 1hr. show. Excellent camera, visual effects, all of it. Needs to explore Gomez character Pls. hurry with some more dirt I can't wait. Tito

I love the show. It is great to see my old friend Steve getting the attention he deserves. It is also nice to see my old home town on TV. Shout out to the Westside. Steve, now about that money you owe me.....

"Gomez" has so much more potential ... I would like to see his character expanded! I'm definitely hooked on the show! I am so excited to know that this series is filmed in New Mexico ... and that Gomez is a New Mexican. Gomez and Hank have a terrific chemistry! He is not only talented but so very handsome!

I can't believe it's over! This season truly left me wanting more. The storyline is amazing with its twists & turns, and the way it's bringing more attention to the other characters. I'm anxoius to see more of Gomez and can hardly wait for season 2!!!!

My husbandf and I love the show and have it on our TIVO list so as not to miss and episode! I think that the Gomez character and Stevens portrayal are spot on. I have know a number of law enforcement officers in narcotics and he is perfect. I am glad that Vince Gilligan came to the same conclusion. I hope we get to know more about him and the partnership with Hank.

Great show!!! All the characters are very impressive. Hope to see more of the Gomez character.

Steven I cannot believe you went from comedian to Actor...? I truly enjoy your stand up comedy and was perplexed to see you on TV portraying a DEA agent.
However I must admit that you are not only convincing as an actor but you left me with that "feel good" feeling like those detectives in Hill Street Blues! (talk about dating myself) Presently I am in Guadalajara Mexico - and have asked my sister (who is also a major fan of yours) to record your episodes and send them to me so that I watch them in Mexico... Guess what Steven...? You have a following here in Mexico... Not New Mexico. But MEXICO. Albeit my family and I watch you on Friday nights as that's when I get my care packages from home with your shows... But we make a fun family night out of it... Yes I have to translate the dialog! And I make up some of the dialog... Well because I can - and becuase my family in Mexico can't tell the difference? In short Steven - this is the first time I have ever responded to a comment box and hope that these accolades are passed on to you. I wish you great success and look forward to breaking bad season 2.

I think the show is awesome! Thanks to 'ON DEMAND" I can watch all the episodes I miss since I work on Sundays. The interactions between Gomez and Hank cracks me up, their chemistry is on point because it reminds me of how we do the same thing at my job. We're a bunch of Teamsters who have worked together for years and crackin' on each other is a daily ritual. Great job Steve you do New Mexico proud. Walts inner struggle intriges me, knowing whats right, yet doing what he feels he must for his family with the time he has left, gives him the STONES to do things he would never do under normal circumstances. You have a gem here, a second season would be great !!!

Steven, I have been a fan of your comedy and acting for several years and now I have become a fan of Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad is a great show and I am looking forward to season 2. Keep up the good work.

Glad that Breaking Bad is doing so well and is representing the great talent (in front and behind the camera) in New Mexico. Would love to see more of the Gomez character developed on the show. Hank and Gomez could be the next classic TV duo! Hopefully next season!
